In response to car importer Max Hoffman's request for a sportier variant of BMW's 02-Series to hit the American market, BMW developed the 2002 with a 2.0-liter version of the M10 inline-four engine. This 1976 example features a 5-speed manual transmission and has been revitalized, sporting a black finish paired with brown vinyl upholstery. It also features European-style bumpers, aftermarket headlights, air conditioning, replacement floor panels, and a vintage-inspired digital head unit. Upon the seller’s acquisition in 2023, the car reportedly underwent maintenance, including servicing the air conditioning system, replacing tires, and addressing fuel and brake system components. This BMW 2002 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee.
Refinished in black, this example has been outfitted with European-style bumpers and replacement floor panels. Additional details include a driver’s side mirror, pop-out quarter windows, chrome trim & window surrounds, aftermarket HID headlights, and 15” Minilite-style wheels dressed in Kuhmo Ecsta PA31 tires installed in 2023. The sunroof remains inoperative and slightly ajar, with accompanying photos in the gallery showcasing paint bubbles, imperfections, and panel fitments.
The cabin presents reclining front seats and a rear bench reupholstered in brown vinyl, complemented by matching door cards. The equipment includes a four-spoke steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, USB outlets, LED interior lights, a retro-style digital stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, and an air conditioning system which is said to have been serviced in 2023. A plastic trim panel is absent from the left front seat. Although the total mileage is unknown, the 5-digit odometer displays approximately 31k miles, of which the seller reportedly drove 300.
Power is provided by a 2.0-liter M10 inline-four engine, generating as much as 96 HP and 106 lb.-ft of torque stock. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Braking is facilitated by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The seller reports an oil change along with replacements to front & rear brake components in 2023, while work under previous ownership included replacing the fuel pump, tank, and filter.

Very cool little 2002 here. The car drives out really well. Has had some great maintenance and updates to the suspension, brakes, steering, and drivetrain. The brakes and steering components are fresh. Clutch feels good with the updated 5-speed. The AC does work and actually works well. Handles well and is comfortable. The paint and body work is very much driver quality but solid and complete. The paint shines up really well but has some orange peel and blistering in areas. The car starts right up and idles well. Have a video above. A great car to be enjoyed as is or take to the next level.
