Introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1965, the W108/W109 models debuted as Mercedes’ flagship S-Class luxury sedans, carrying on from its W111/W112 “Fintail” predecessors. The more luxurious long-wheelbase variant, the W109 offered an air suspension system, premium burl walnut trim, power windows, and an automatic transmission. This 1972 Mercedes Benz W109 300SEL is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 engine and comes finished in Forest Green Metallic over a Cognac leather interior. This example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts.

This 300SEL was refinished in its original Forest Green Metallic paint under previous ownership. It rides on factory 14” steel wheels with color-matched hubcaps and new Ironman RB-12 NWS tires. Exterior details of the long-wheelbase W109 include chrome brightwork, vertically stacked Bosch halogen sealed beam headlights, a hood-mounted vent for the cabin filter, an automatic power antenna, a sunroof, and a dual exhaust outlet. The seller notes that two extra wheels and tires are included in the sale. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, the cabin is appointed in Cognac leather and features premium burl walnut trim which spans the dashboard, windshield sill, upper door panels, and inner window frames. Equipment includes power windows, power door locks, an analog clock, a locking glovebox, a 5-speaker Becker stereo, and velour carpeting. The air conditioning system has been revived with a new compressor, evaporator, A/C lines, and a restored blower motor. The seller notes that the seat front has been repaired by a professional and that the service records indicate that the odometer was replaced about one year ago. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

This 300SEL is powered by an M117 4.5-liter V8 that sends as much as 195 HP and 264 lb.-ft of torque through a 3-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter. Stopping power comes from four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes and its supple ride is made possible with its double-wishbone suspension and air spring system. Additionally, the steering box has been rebuilt and a new muffler has been fitted. The seller notes that they have spent the last year sorting the car and that it is ready to be driven. The seller states service receipts dating back to the 1970s will accompany the sale.

This sale will include a transferrable New York registration, spare tire, toolkit, owner’s manuals, sales literature, and data cards (paper and plaque).

The seller would like you to know:  "I spent the last year sorting out this car so that this is a car you can get in comfortably and go anywhere. No mechanical issues, it is a nice car that can actually be driven. Fully tuned and maintained. It is rare to come across a 300 where everything is functioning as it should. Stays at the correct ride height, and air suspension works exceptionally. The A/c blows cold, power windows work very fast, the clock works, and dashboard lights all work- including Christmas tree lights! This is a wonderful example."

@mee418 the cables are good alot of service was done to the heat /defrost and A/C system rebuilt blower motors new levers new compressor and evaporator and some lines there is no rust through areas just some corrosion the underside is actually very solid as for the Mielage the new cable was installed by previous owner who had a lot of work done will post receipts tonight he said Speedo would work sporadically mielage was not set back but I would call it tmu

  • mee418 (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

Is photo 185 showing rust through underneath?
How are the 4 temp cables. Do they move freely? Have they been replaced?
You mentioned that the odometer has been replaced. Was the miles set to the current miles when installed? Or started at 0?
Is the miles accurate or is this TMU.

@PCARMARKET I'm sorry for my ignorance, thanks for the information.

  • PCARMARKET 1 year, 7 monthsago

@FJhokie hello. We include a carfax with each listing. Carfax is not available for pre-17 digit vin vehicles.

  • FJhokie (registered bidder) 1 year, 7 monthsago

@veloce1964 I think a carfax is important since 1981-2023 would be 42 of 51 years of service history and potential accidents/title issues. I'm disappointed the PCM doesn't require it.

    Love the green GLWA
