The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a 2+2 coupe designed by Italy’s Carrozzeria Ghia with handcrafted bodywork by German coachbuilder Karmann. This 1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe is said to have undergone a major “body-off” restoration in 2004 including new paint, upholstery, and chrome plating. It was purchased by the seller from its previous owner out of California in 2021 and has since undergone an engine rebuild with an upgraded 1,643cc displacement. Accompanied by nearly three decades worth of service records, restoration invoices, and car show awards, this Karmann Ghia is now being offered for auction out of Oregon.

The Karmann Ghia features hand-shaped, butt-welded, and pewter-smoothed bodywork with distinctive round fenders. This 1971 Coupe was refinished in red with a black contrasting roof by Scott McCollum during the restoration in 2004. The chrome brightwork was replated by Larry Carlton of American Plating, all glass and trim pieces are said to have been replaced, and the exterior has been thoroughly polished and treated with ceramic coating. The chrome 15” wheels were also mounted with new Vredestein Sport Classic tires in 2024. The seller adds that the exterior remains in excellent condition apart from a small area of thinning paint on the roof. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The black vinyl interior was redone by Sam Young at Upholstery Unlimited during the restoration with a new dashboard, steering wheel, carpeting, upholstery, door panels, seat latches, trim pieces, gauges, and more. Accessories include black and red coco floor mats, a chrome horn ring, three-point seatbelts, a heater, and a stereo with aftermarket speakers.

Power comes from an air-cooled flat-four engine that drives the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transaxle. The original engine block was replaced under prior ownership and the engine was rebuilt with an upgraded 1,643cc displacement by Youngs Old Volks Home of Bend Oregon under current ownership. Approximately 900 miles have been driven since the engine rebuild which also included a new carburetor and firewall insulation.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a restored factory floor jack, a car cover, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: The seller would like you to know that this car is cosmetically close to being a concours car, perhaps a 1.5 on the scale as opposed to a "1".  It is mechanically and cosmetically restored and ready to drive anywhere.  It is a show car that always garners a lot of attention, and has won many awards (included in the photo gallery, as well as will be provided to the new owner). It has a new rebuilt and balanced engine that runs strong, and will cruise at 75 -80 mph with no problem. Everything is new or restored, and we mean everything, including the engine and engine compartment, interior, paint, engine, trim, chrome, tires, wheels, etc.  It is a blast to drive. The investment in this vehicle is far greater than the current values for this car.”

Hello potential buyers. I am here to answer any and all questions about this lovely car. I drive it regularly, on local sports car drive get togethers, cars and coffee's, and car shows. Most of the comments are that they've never seen one this clean or this restored. Nothing has been left untouched, it is quite an amazing restoration. I am only selling it as I have a Porsche 914 in the middle of restoration in Colton Oregon which is costing me more money than was planned, so I had to choose which one of my cars I would sell. This one is still my favorite car to drive, even though I have other more modern collector cars. You may note in the photos that the Nexen Tires were still on the car when photographed, but I had installed a new set of Vredestein Sport Classic Tires. The speedometer was recently cosmetically and mechanically restored by Palo Alto Speedometer in California, and a new speedometer cable was installed. I also had the tire jack restored to the original finish. This is like a "new" used car, driving it is like driving a new car, except that it's 53 years of age. The winning plaques I have go to the new owner, as well as all maintenance and restoration records. The engine re-build is very recent and there are very few miles on it. Happy bidding, and feel to ask any questions. Thanks.
