A tribute to Enzo Ferrari’s late son Alfredo affectionately known to his family as “Dino”, the Dino 206 GT was produced by Ferrari and sold under the Dino marque between 1967 and 1974. It was designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti with power coming from a transverse-mounted V6 Dino engine. The more powerful and refined Dino 246 GT model was introduced in 1969 featuring a larger engine and a longer wheelbase. This 1971 example was purchased from DPM Classics in Monaco and was subsequently delivered to the world-renowned Toni Auto of Maranello for a full bare metal restoration at a cost of over €200k. The car was airfreighted to Los Angeles in 2023 where it was transported by an enclosed trailer to Dino expert Juan Villarreal at Grand Prix Motors for fine-tuning and comprehensive inspection. Supported by restoration documents and a letter of authenticity from Ferrari dealer Scuderia Monte-Carlo, this Dino 246 GT is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
The Dino’s bodywork was designed by Aldo Brovarone and Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina. The mid-engine sports car features curvaceous body lines and a distinctive side profile with iconic scalloped air intakes behind the doors. The nose contains six vent slits, and the louvered engine cover is flanked by signature flying buttress C-pillars. This 1971 Dino 246 GT is one of 2,295 coupes produced in total and was stripped to bare metal to be refinished in its original Rosso paint color during the restoration. The work was carried out by Toni Auto of Maranello, a renowned restorationist credited with an F430 on display at the Ferrari Museum. Equipment includes split chrome bumpers, unique Dino badging, a driver’s side mirror, quad ANSA exhaust pipes, and 5-bolt Cromodora alloy wheels measuring 14”x6.5”. A matching full-size spare wheel is also mounted in the front trunk.
The restored interior is lined with red carpeting contrasted with black leatherette on the door panels, center console, rear bulkhead, and bucket seats. The dashboard is covered in its original Ferrari Mohair upholstery. Accessories include a leather-wrapped three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, a gated shifter assembly, air conditioning, power windows, and Veglia Borletti instrumentation.
The mid-mounted 2.4-liter Dino 65° V6 engine was rated at 195 HP and features dual overhead camshafts with two valves per cylinder, Magneti Marelli ignition, and triple two-barrel Weber carburetors. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed all-synchromesh manual transaxle. The suspension includes unequal-length A-arms, coilover shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars front and rear. Stopping power is derived from vacuum-assisted disc brakes at each corner. A letter is provided in the gallery from Toni Auto confirming the car’s engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, and electrical system were rebuilt during the restoration. A verification report is also provided by Juan Villarreal of Grand Prix Motors showing a complete inspection performed in August 2023 along with adjustment and fine-tuning of the carburetors, reset timing, and a compression test. The results of the compression are listed below:
This sale will include a clean Colorado title, restoration documents, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a letter of authenticity from the official Ferrari dealer Scuderia Monte-Carlo.
The seller would like you to know: “This Dino was owned by a resident of Monaco, who purchased the Dino as it was always his most favorite Ferrari. Having this passion for the Dino, the owner through the direction of DPM Classics in Monaco commissioned the Dino to world-renowned Toni Auto of Maranello for a total restoration including the engine, transmission, suspension, paint, and interior as evidenced completed December of 2021. At a cost of over 200,000 Euros or 250,000 USD. Back in Monaco, our inspection was made. The Dino then went to Ferrari Scuderia of Monte Carlo the official dealer where the certification was performed. The Dino was then airfreighted from Europe and arrived at LAX and the transported enclosed carrier to Grand Prix Motors where it was fine-tuned by Juan Villarreal at Grand Prix Motors along with a comprehensive inspection of all components and a compression test. This Dino is one of the finest examples on the planet and it is our pleasure to offer the Dino to those who are appreciative and are desirous to own a piece of history.”
