Up for auction is this 1970 Porsche 914-6 race car. Originally sold from Ted McWilliams Porsche Audi of Pittsburgh, this 914-6 was eventually purchased by its current owner in the 1980s who had commissioned a former SVRA mechanic of the year and a Porsche restorer to build the race car we see today. Lightweight fiberglass body panels were installed along with an upgraded suspension, rebuilt brakes, and a full roll cage. Power comes from a 2.0L flat-six racing engine built and dyno tuned by Peter Dawes, which is paired with a custom-built 5-speed 901 manual gearbox and a Quaif limited-slip differential. Throughout its career, this 914-6 is said to have attended three track days and four SVRA racing events at Watkins Glen. It is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of New York with approximately 10 hours reported on the engine build.
During the build, the original chassis was deemed to have had too extensive corrosion to be a safe platform, and a replacement chassis was sourced from another 1970 914. Some of the original 914-6 body panels were moved over to the new chassis along with genuine steel fender flares and a lightweight fiberglass hood, trunk lid, and removable targa top. The car was finished in Green Glasurit paint with contrasting white graphics. It rides on refurbished 15” Fuchs wheels that are currently dressed in Toyo RA1 tires sized 205/50.
The cabin has been stripped out for weight savings and fitted with a full 6-point roll cage, a Sparco Evo driver’s seat, and OMP safety harnesses. A three-spoke MOMO steering wheel was also installed along with a safety net, an upgraded shifter, simplified control switches, and a timing degree window in the rear firewall.
The air-cooled 2.0L flat-six racing engine was custom built by Peter Dawes and fitted with new PMO carburetors, MSD ignition, and an Aase Brothers alloy flywheel. The rear wheels are driven through a custom-built 5-speed 901 manual gearbox with race gears, an aluminum intermediate plate, an oil cooler, and a Quaif limited-slip differential. The suspension has been upgraded with Tangerine Racing reinforced swing arms w/ negative 2.5-degree camber, Avo adjustable rear coilovers, Bilstein front shock absorbers, and a Tarrett front sway bar, drop links, and spindles. New CV joints were installed, and the brakes have been rebuilt and upgraded with stainless steel pistons by PMB Brakes. Approximately 10 hours of use are logged on the engine build and a slight leak is reported from the rear transmission seal, although the seller will supply a new gasket to address this.
This sale will include SVRA logbooks, an original owner's manual, stamped dealer service book, a New York registration, and a bill of sale. For any enthusiast looking to get into vintage racing, this highly competitive 914-6 makes an excellent choice.

Thanks everyone for the comments and bids
the last two bidders were very close to the reserve but just not quite there.
maybe the deal tank will be the answer
@Jowett Thank you I figured that is what you did, best for value. This is a lot of car for the money great for SCCA, autocross & other club events.
Great auction

I have access to a private airfield that sells Avgas but all of the tracks I have gone to sell race gas.

the engine is 2 liter single plug with a 914/6 case.

The 1970 914 chassis was a 4 cyl car. We transferred all of the mechanical components and some solid chassis components from the 914/6 to the 4 cyl chassis. The car is registered under the 914/6 vin. as those vin plates were transferred to the car as well. Just trying to be totally transparent by acknowledging that the vast majority of the chassis metalwork came from the 4 cyl 914.
I live in Georgia... This would be my first race car. Where do you buy gas??
You sourced a different chassis from a 1970 was this a 4 cylinder car or a 914-6 car? Which serial # is being used if the second chassis is a 4 cylinder? Also is this a 2.0 car or 2.5

Converting to pump gas could be done but is not really something to spend a lot of time and money on. Better off installing a street engine and leaving this engine just as it was built.
Bid in the amount of $16,250
Would it be costly to convert to pump gas? What would be involved?

93 octane will not cut it; race gas is a must
It has a 12 gallon fuel cell
pm2207
You are correct on both counts
@Jowett Thanks for the information. Great car!
I assume WG is your home track and the currently installed transaxle is geared optimally for it?
Hello,
Can you use 93 octane or do you have to use race gas? Also how many gallons does the tank hold?
Thank you

As for the compression ratio, I do not have the final number but it is sufficiently high to require race fuel. We did dyno the engine on more that one race fuel and found 100 low lead Avgas worked very well. I have used that all out exclusively with fine results.
As for the gearing , I have Porsche gear ratio charts and grafts over a wide range of ratios and specific ratios that we chose . The new owner will be given this info . I also have a second completely refurbished zero time 901 transaxle with alloy intermediate plate and oil return inlets set up exactly as the one in the car but with slightly different gearing and a new WAVE TRAC limited slip diff . This will be made available for the new owner to purchase if so desired.
OOPS, I inadvertently hit the send button so to continue
and receipts for some of the other engine parts that I supplied to Dawes Racing.
As far as the transaxle goes I can't find the build sheet per say but I did find the Carquip receipt for the mainshaft and other internal parts and from CMS- California motorsports for the limited slip diff. I am not one for saving receipts so I was a little surprised that I found as many as I did re. the engine and transaxle. Hope this helps .

Build sheets and receipts from Peter Dawes Racing I do have plus receipts for parts ( camshafts, European Racing Headers, Asse Brothers lightweight alloy flywheel, KEP-Kennedy Engineering Products pp& clutch disc , JB racing billet race distributor,EBS racing 930 oil pump,
High compression engine requiring RF/110?
Any more information you can share regarding the "race gears"?
Do you have full build sheet/receipts for the engine and transaxle?

Thanks for the kind words
I pictured this car in my mind for years before I even started the build. Obviously, I love the esthetics as well. Having a little problem coming to grips that it may sell I won't have it any longer.
In addition to all the technical choices, the aesthetic ones are equally impressive. I love this car. GLWTS.

Re. Clint930
The headlights and turn signals are not wired up....only the brake lights.
This could be converted back to street use I suppose but it is really built as a vintage race car or track day car.
I see the photo with the headlights in the on position. Are the lights and turn signals in working order? I would want to license the car for the street as well.
Thanks
Re. robmsales
Thank you for the nice comments.
The car was corner balanced when completed. I was in driver seat ( around 185 lbs at the time ) for the corner balance . I did not write the figures down. Best as I remember it was in the 2150 neighborhood. But I wouldn't bet the ranch on that figure. I thought the weight might have been recorded in the SVRA log book but I just looked and it was not
Hi Jowett
Great looking 914-6 good color and the build was done very well
Would you have the total weight of the 914 w/o the driver in it?
I'm sure you cornered balanced this at one time - or another
Thanks a lot
re. ptkacik
Thanks for the comment
There was absolutely no rust anywhere which is why we chose this chassis. However, an excellent observation on there swing arm pick tip points.
That was addressed during the build in 2 ways. First the pickup points had formed metal reinforcement plates welded to them. Then an adjustment rod, heim jointed on both ends, was welded to welded plates on the rear bulkhead and to the pick up point on the other end
I just took a couple of pictures and will post them as soon as I find out how. So look for them soon.
BTW, beautiful color for a 914 (or 914-6).
There are several pictures of the top of the rear coil-overs which see no lateral loads; however, no pictures of the rear trailing arms and pickup points that both rust badly and see the highest stress. Can we see that? Thank you.
Good morning....the seller here
I will be checking in a few times every day. I am glad to answer any questions you may have or help in any way I can to better your understanding of this great little vintage race car.
Thanks
