Introduced in 1970, the Plymouth Superbird was built as a homologation car to comply with NASCAR regulations, featuring an elongated nose cone and iconic rear wing. This example is one of 1,920 produced during a single model year and is powered by a replacement 440ci V8 paired with a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a Sure-Grip differential. The car’s journey began in 1972 when its first owner bought it from a dealer in Grand Island, NY, insisting the wing be reinstalled and having it repainted blue for a bolder look. After a few years of driving, he parked the car on his family’s farm before selling it to his cousin in 1986. It was repainted black and maintained by the original owner’s cousin until 2005 when it was sold to a restoration shop owner who meticulously restored it to its original specifications by 2006. After briefly passing through a dealer and another owner, it was eventually returned to New York by its last recorded owner in 2013. Acquired by the seller in July 2024, this Plymouth Superbird is now being offered for auction accompanied by a reproduction window sticker and broadcast sheet, service records, and ownership documentation.
The Plymouth Superbird stands out with its distinctive, aerodynamic nose cone and towering 24” rear wing, designed to maximize stability on high-speed NASCAR ovals. This example has been refinished in its factory-specified color of Alpine White (EW1) with new Plymouth side decals and Road Runner graphics. Equipment includes a black vinyl roof, black flip-up headlights, hood pins, a fender-mounted antenna, a driver’s side mirror, dual chrome exhaust tips, and 15” Rallye wheels with Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires.
The cabin features dual-row bench seats in black vinyl upholstery with contrasting grey accents. Accessories include a three-spoke steering wheel with a Road Runner horn button, a column-mounted gear selector, Plymouth-branded floor mats, a heater and defroster, a Chrysler Solid State pushbutton AM radio, a glovebox, a 150-mph speedometer, and a “tic-toc-tach” tachometer with an integrated analog clock.
A replacement orange-painted 440ci V8 Super Commando V8 engine was installed under previous ownership and features a dual snorkel air cleaner that feeds a four-barrel carburetor. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 3-speed TorqueFlite A727 automatic transmission and a 3.55:1 Sure-Grip differential. The car is equipped with power steering and power-assisted brakes with front discs and rear drums.
This sale will include a reproduction broadcast sheet and window sticker, a binder of documentation and service records, a spare tire, and a transferrable registration.
