The successor to the legendary 300SL and 190SL roadsters, the Mercedes-Benz W113 SL-Class was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show with a uniquely shaped removable hardtop which earned the car its “Pagoda” nickname. The 280L version was introduced in late 1967 featuring a larger and more powerful. 2.8-liter M130 inline-six engine. This 1969 example is finished in Blue over a matching interior with air conditioning, an original Becker radio, and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Said to have been cared for by its owner for 45 years and treated to over $44k worth of recent service, this W113 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
This 280SL is finished in Blue with a matching pagoda hardtop and a fabric convertible roof. It is distinguished as a North American market example by its sealed beam headlights, chrome bumper guards, and side reflectors. Other equipment includes chrome bumpers and trim, a chrome windshield surround, a driver’s side mirror, a fender-mounted antenna, dual tailpipes, and polished 14” slotted aluminum wheels with body-colored hubcaps. The car rides on a set of new tires and the seller states it was completely refinished over 20 years ago. The paint is described to be in good driver-grade condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in blue vinyl upholstery with matching carpets and a body-colored dashboard. Accessories include a wood-rimmed Nardi three-spoke steering wheel, wood upper dashboard trim, manual window cranks, an under-dash A/C system, a windshield defroster, an analog VDO clock, and an original Becker Europa BC/FM stereo. The seller notes some tears are present on the seats and all gauges and accessories are working properly including the newer air-conditioning system.
This 280SL is equipped with a fuel-injected 2.8-liter M130 SOHC inline-six engine rated at 158 HP. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed automatic transmission and stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes. The seller indicates over $44k worth of service has been completed over the past several years including the replacement of the cylinder head assembly as well as a new water pump, radiator hoses, fuel pump, engine mounts, distributor cap, starter motor, spark plugs, front crankshaft seal, wheel bearings, fuse box cover, a new brake master cylinder, brake lines, brake pads and rotors, rear control arm bushings, a valve adjustment, a rebuilt power steering box, and much more. Corresponding service invoices are provided for reference in the gallery.
This sale will include a spare tire, service records, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “This car came from a 45-year owner who always garaged and cared for it, maintaining good service and low miles.”

@cccmanhattan from what we could tell the soft top is original and had not been up in years. When we tried to put it up it was a cool day and didn't have much flexibility.
The top was pretty tired. My 2 cents is if you were going to be using the soft top regularly I would replace it. It maybe serviceable if it were for occasional use.
*the soft top
What can you say about the conditionof the top? I see one picture with it partially extended theat shows water stains and a rip. Have you tried to put it up all the way? Is it serviceable or does it need to be replaced?
