The 911S sat atop the original Porsche 911 model range featuring a more powerful flat-six engine than the standard variant as well as anti-roll bars, Koni shock absorbers, four-wheel disc brakes, and a premium trim package. This 1968 example is one of only 227 Porsche 911S Coupes produced for the model year and is presented in its factory combination of Burgundy Red over Beige leatherette upholstery with Pepita cloth seat inserts. It was treated to a comprehensive restoration at Porsche of London, Ontario, in 2017 and a major engine overhaul by RM Auto Restoration between 2019 and 2020. This 911S was eventually purchased by the current owner in 2022 who subsequently converted its original numbers-matching Sportomatic gearbox to traditional 5-speed manual operation. A thoroughly sorted and drivable example of one of the most collectible air-cooled Porsche 911s, this 911S Coupe is now being offered for auction out of California.
This 911S Coupe is presented in its factory-specified shade of Burgundy Red (6808), among the earliest colors offered on the Porsche 911. It is distinguishable as an “S” model from a standard 911 Coupe by its aluminum rocker panel moldings, black rubber bumperettes, and anodized gold badging. Equipment includes chrome trim and window moldings, pop-out rear quarter windows, a polished driver’s side mirror, front fog lights, and 15” Fuchs alloy wheels. The car was subject to a complete restoration through Porsche of Ontario in 2017 which included full bare-metal paintwork and refinished chrome trim by Burwell Auto Body at a cost of over $35k. The seller adds that the paint remains in excellent overall condition apart from slight imperfections on the nose and rear bumper. The tires were installed in 2019 and are recommended for replacement due to age, and some pitting can be seen on the rear bumperettes.
Compared to the entry-level 911, the 911S features a four-spoke leather steering wheel, aluminum door sill covers, and basketweave vinyl dashboard trim with a “911” badge on the passenger’s side. During the restoration, this car’s interior was redone by Fibernew in its original combination of Beige leatherette upholstery with matching square-weave carpets and Pepita cloth seat inserts. The seller notes the carpets, headliner, and seat liners were replaced while the dashboard, door panels, and parcel shelf were re-dyed. Accessories include lap belts, a heater, manual window cranks, analog VDO gauges, and an aftermarket retro-style stereo system installed by Carphonix of London, Ontario. The 5-speed manual shifter and pedal box were installed during the gearbox conversion by TLG Auto in 2022. The seller notes some separation between the inner door panels and the metal doors, and the door pulls are stretched. The armrests show some discoloration and wear, the fit of the carpet is not perfect, the driver’s side sun visor clip is missing, and the seat hinges are pitted with slight corrosion.
The original Porsche 911S is equipped with an air-cooled 2.0-liter flat-six engine featuring dual Weber carburetors and forged aluminum pistons. This car’s engine was overhauled during the restoration by Porsche Ontario in 2017 along with the brakes, suspension, and drivetrain. The engine was removed and serviced again by RM Auto Restoration in 2020 including new seals, gaskets, piston rings, fluids, and a dyno test. Upon the current owner’s purchase in 2022, the original semi-automatic Sportomatic gearbox was converted to a 5-speed manual operation by TLG Auto of North Hollywood along with valve adjustments and new valve cover gaskets. Corresponding invoices are provided in the gallery.
This sale will include a collection of records and a clean title. It should be noted that the California title lists the car as being a 1967 model, while the car's actual chassis number and Porsche Production Specifications Certificate correspond with a 1968 A-Series example.

@opener This is a european market car that was eventually sent to Canada and then to the US.
Beautiful car, great interior. A little puzzling since there were no 911S for North America in 1968. I have seen at least one that was sold in the US as a ‘67. Possibly this was a European car. The dash knobs look like they are European or pre ‘68 since they are the old style knobs and not the soft rubber ones required for NA in ‘68. Also the exterior mirror and black engine grille are from later model 911s. The flagship 911L and the 911 had air pumps for pollution compliance. The 5.5x15 would be the correct wheel for both the S and L in ‘68. I would love to know the background of this great looking SWB 911.
What a great looking car. Love the houndstooth seats and the overall look of this 911. I am sure some did not like the Sportomatic transmission on these and felt a manual is more in favor. All person opinions and the owners did what they wanted. Regardless, beautiful car, good luck.

Stunning example of a rare 68 911S
@sphillips1999 OK so I don't have a perfect answer, but I do have something. According to the RED book, Porsche built 1267 911S Coupes in 1968 and 442 Targas. The book does not break down how many coupes were manual and how many were sportomatic.
The 277 number has been used to describe this car previously in listings. I am waiting to hear back from the appraiser about where that number came from but it is one of two options:
- 1 of 277 911S Sportomatics
or
- 1 of 277 911S Coupes in Burgundy Red.
I will continue trying to find out more information but this is the best I can do right now.

@sphillips1999 We were told in the appraisal report that this car is "1 of 227." I have written a follow up note to the appraiser for clarification on this number and will circle back when I have an exact answer as the report did not define whether that's total 911S Coupe production for the year or refers specifically to sportomatic-equipped cars.

@911ster No, we do not have that. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2020 by RM Auto Restoration (see reciepts) and has done less than 1,000 miles since.

@croy56 Good Morning! Can confirm the wheels are 15X5.5 and I have uploaded a photo of the stamping on the back to the gallery. The tires were also date coded on the back side and the codes are 1116 so we do recommend replacement as they have aged out..
