Up for auction is this 1968 BMW R50/2 finished in black with contrasting white pinstriping.  Manufactured in Munich from 1960-69, the R50/2 is a classic BMW motorcycle equipped with a kick-started 494cc twin-cylinder boxer engine.  Simple to maintain and a joy to operate, these BMWs make superb long-distance tourers for those in search of a traditional motorbike experience.  It was acquired by its current owner in 2003 and has since traveled approximately 5k miles with some considerable maintenance items carried out along the way.  This R50/2 is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Maine while showing approximately 45k miles on the 5-digit odometer.

Under previous ownership, this R50/2 was refinished in the current shade of black with contrasting white pinstriping.  Noteworthy features include BMW badges on the gas tank, chrome brightwork and headlight guards, a foldable luggage rack, dual leather saddlebags, and a leather two-up seat.  The saddlebags are shown to be worn and other signs of age and patina are noted throughout the body.  The telescopic fork front suspension has been retained and this motorcycle rides on a set of 18" wire-spoke wheels which are currently dressed in Continental tires.

The air-cooled 494cc twin-cylinder pushrod-type boxer engine offers an output of up 26 HP, which is sent to the rear wheel by way of a 4-speed manual transmission.  Other mechanical features include magneto ignition, a kick-starter, long swingarm rear suspension with dual shock absorbers, drum brakes, and dual carburetors.  New fork seals were installed in July of 2013, and the carburetors are said to have been cleaned in 2014 by Wagner Motorsports along with the installation of a new petcock and refurbishment of the fuel tank.  Major service carried out in May of 2015 included a new clutch, throttle, and brake cable, new steering head bearings, a steering damper friction kit, new transmission oil, and service of the final drive with new seals and gaskets.  The last oil change is said to have been carried out in November of 2017.

This sale will include two sets of keys, a toolkit, some service records, and a clean title.  This classic BMW R50/2 is just waiting to be enjoyed by a new rider, do not miss out.

    @mydogisphat Thank you. When the bike was restored about 5,00 miles ago, the engine case was replaced with a brand new factory case and as such does not carry any numbers. Before storage, I drained all of the gas out of it and ran the carburetors dry. Add gas and it's ready to ride.

    @twin-grille-roadster hi Micheal, I have one more question about the bike. The engine and frame numbers both match?

    @mydogisphat Hello,
    Good question. I just called Pcarmarket to find out. The actual auction has ended and the bike did not meet the reserve. If a vehicle doe not sell during the auction it automatically goes into Deal Tank for 30 days after which it can be renewed at the sellers discretion. It currently has about eight days before the deal tank listing expires. If you are interested, please make an offer and we will try to make it work.
    Thanks for your interest,
    Michael
