Originally built by Chevrolet as a 1965 Corvette Convertible, this example was purchased by the seller in 1998 as the basis of a Corvette Grand Sport conversion. Only the original body and dash were used in the conversion, while every other piece of the car was constructed using new parts. Initially conceived by Zora Arkus-Duntov as a way for Chevrolet to go sports car racing, the Grand Sport Corvettes went to compete with Shelby, Ferrari, Lotus, and others to bring the trophy to Corvette. Roger Penske and AJ Foyt even fielded cars during this racing period. A copy of the original mandrel bent tube frame was used to build this tribute car which features modern aluminum Corvette suspension, Wilwood disc brakes, magnesium BBS wheels, and a GM Performance 502 crate engine. This outstanding 1965 Corvette is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee.
Grand Sport style bodywork was grafted to the '65 body and features the famous big block Daytona Hood with all its venting for cooling and front-end air control. The body was coated with epoxy primer multiple times, sanded, and finished in a House of Kolor Ultra Orange Pearl paint with several layers of clearcoat. The stripes are white and silver with flat clearcoat and the car rides on 18” magnesium BBS wheels measuring 9.5” wide in the front, 12” wide in the rear, and dressed in a set of Toyo R888R tires.
The original dash, door panels, and gauge components were restored using black Connolly leather. All gauges were restored by Rogers Corvette Clocks to factory condition. Heater control knobs have been converted by Vintage Air to act as both A/C and heater controls. A Blaupunkt AM/FM CD player has been added to the dash, but in the interest of weight savings, there are no speakers present. The electric seats are from a 1998 Corvette and have been modified to achieve an appropriate height for the 1965 period look and are upholstered in full leather. The cabin is lined with Sliver Knit carpeting as found in Porsches, and a billet aluminum adjustable steering column is mated with a MOMO racing steering wheel. Headlight motors have been converted to new electric units that operate from the dash pull switch and power new H-4 lights.
Power comes from a GM Performance 502 complete crate engine rated at 502 HP and 567 lb.-ft of torque. This engine includes JE Pistons and aluminum heads as well as a Holley 850 carburetor and intake manifold. A Vintage Air Front Runner Serpentine Drive System with power steering and air conditioning is out front with a Griffin radiator and electric fan for cooling. A McLeod aluminum flywheel, RST double disk clutch, hydraulic throw-out bearing, and McLeod aluminum scatter shield are paired with the Tremec 6-speed. The exhaust includes a set of Sanderson headers flowing to an original set of mid-sixties Corvette side pipes. Other features include a modern aluminum suspension, a Curry Ford 9" rear end, four-link connection, independent axles, 3.90 gearing, and a new set of Wilwood disc brakes. The seller adds that the car weighs in at 2,874 lbs. and is perfectly corner balanced with approximately 500 miles driven since completion.
This sale will include a clean title.

Such a beautiful build. I would be a very proud owner.
@Twicedaily With the Vintage Air system in the car, on really cold days you have heat circulating in the car or cold air blowing around the compartment on the hot days. It just lengthens the seasons when you can enjoy the car. Any convertible feels better with the A/C on and the top down when it's hot outside. I ride motorcycles also, and when it's cold outside, I put on a heated jacket, and it adds months to your riding season. Thanks for inquiring.
A truly beautiful build. Can you please clarify: why was AC (working I assume) added when it is an open cockpit car? Thanks
Can you post a cold start and a driving video?
Bid in the amount of $12,000
@bmackrell Primarily, for age and health reasons. This will give someone else the opportunity to have the proud ownership that I have enjoyed.
