Inspired by the iconic 300SL Roadster, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL debuted at the 1954 New York Auto Show, showcasing similar styling, suspension, and engineering while introducing a 1.9-liter inline-four engine derived from the 300SL’s straight-six. This 1961 example underwent a comprehensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration and is refinished in Black over a Rosser Red leather upholstery. It comes equipped with a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission, Solex dual carburetors, a new black soft top, 13” steel wheels, a Becker Europa AM/FM radio, and more. This beautifully restored 190SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
The 190SL echoes the 300SL Roadster’s signature design elements, including distinctive fender flares, bumper styling, and an iconic single-bar front grille with a central Mercedes-Benz emblem. This example has been refinished in Black (40 G) as part of a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration, during which every rubber component and weatherstripping was replaced with OEM materials. The fender wells and undercarriage, including the fuel tank, were restored to factory-correct colors and markings, while all chrome trim was replated to concours standards. It features a new black convertible soft top, a chrome-finished driver-side mirror, a bright grille, bumper overriders, and a polished windshield surround. The 13” steel wheels present paint-matched Mercedes-Benz emblemized hubcaps and whitewall radial tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin offers low-back bucket seats reupholstered in Rosser Red leather, complemented by matching door panels and dashboard trim. It comes equipped with driver and passenger sun visors, original rear reflectors, and a Becker Europa radio. The analog VDO instrumentation has been fully restored to its original show-quality appearance, and the trunk retains its original spare wheel, jack, and lug wrench. All gauges and electronics are reported to be in proper working order with no warning lights illuminated.
Power comes from a rebuilt 1.9-liter M121 inline-four equipped with Solex dual carburetors. The rear wheels are driven through a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission. The comprehensive mechanical restoration also included the rear axle (with a new boot), front suspension, brake booster, fresh anodized components, all-new hoses, and factory-correct Baruch hose clamps. Factory equipment includes double-wishbone front suspension, rear swing axles with coil springs, and power-assisted drum brakes.
This sale will include a spare tire and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “The car is a superb example in every way fully restored with no expense spared and with exceptional Black paint and has a very attractive interior finished in Red leather with gleaming chrome gauge surrounds and brilliant chrome touches throughout. An excellent driver that also shows extremely well, this rare and highly desirable 190SL Roadster will be a cherished addition to any serious collection!”
