Produced between 1959 and 1971, the Mercedes-Benz W111 full-size luxury car is renowned for its build quality and distinctive “fintail” bodywork. The range was topped by the 220 SEb, powered by an M127 inline-six engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. This 1961 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb Coupe was reportedly refinished in its factory-specified Medium Red over tan upholstery and features a sliding sunroof along with the rare manual transmission option. Originally delivered in the United States, it was imported to Canada in 2010, where it remained in Nova Scotia for the next 10 years before being acquired by the current owner, a retired mechanic in Quebec. This example is now being offered for auction on behalf of the owner.
Nicknamed Heckflosse or “fintail” for its distinctive pointed rear fenders, the W111 was originally designed by Friedrich Geiger and adapted into two-door coupe and cabriolet variants by Paul Bracq. This 220Seb is said to have been refinished in its original Medium Red shade. Equipment includes a sunroof, a chrome radiator grille with a raised hood ornament, chrome bumpers and rockers, a driver’s side mirror, front vent windows, a polished tailpipe, and 13” wheels with Mercedes-Benz emblemized hubcaps and BFGoodrich Silvertown Radial whitewall tires. Some chrome peeling is noted on the rear end. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
Inside, the driver is greeted with tan upholstery complemented by a burgundy dashboard, a white-finished two-spoke steering wheel, and grey carpeting. Accessories include a Becker Europa II stereo, VDO instrumentation, a floor-mounted manual shifter, manual roll-up windows, a center console storage compartment, and a rear passenger fold-down center armrest. The seller notes the clock is currently inoperable.
Factory-rated at 120 HP, the 2.2-liter M127 inline-six engine features a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission, and braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. The chassis includes an independent double-wishbone front suspension and a rear swing axle. The seller notes the engine was removed and comprehensively rebuilt under prior ownership. No outstanding service items have been reported.
This sale will include a Canadian registration.
The seller would like you to know: “Pillarless big coupe with a manual transmission!”
