Manufactured in Sweden from 1957 to 1981, the Aktiv Fischer Snow Trac is a fully enclosed tracked vehicle designed for traversing deep snow and soft surfaces. The Snow Trac was commonly used as an official utility vehicle throughout Alaska and Canada’s Yukon Territory as well as a popular snow grooming vehicle at ski resorts. It was also employed by NATO forces and British Royal Marines during the Cold War. Based on its serial number, 1556, this Snow Trac ST4 is one of 100 examples produced in 1971 and features a 7-passenger cab. This unique snow vehicle is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.
This Snow Trac ST4 measures 6’2” wide and about 12’ long with a mostly aluminum body and a standard 7-passenger cab. Equipment includes dual mirrors, windshield wipers, caged headlights, a rear spot lamp, cargo rails, a vented engine cover, a rear tow bar, and a roof-mounted escape hatch. The seller indicates the tires have been filled with foam and much of the exterior paint has deteriorated and recommends the vehicle be refinished by its next owner.
The cabin accommodates seven passengers with opposing bench seats and a driver’s bucket seat trimmed in black vinyl. Equipment includes a rubber floor liner, a fire extinguisher, a three-spoke steering wheel, a rearview mirror, and a bare metal dashboard fitted with analog VDO gauges, a fuse panel, and a 12-volt electric heater. An aftermarket Ultra PRO tachometer has also been mounted to the steering wheel column. The seller states all gauges and accessories are working properly.
Power comes from an air-cooled Volkswagen flat-four industrial-spec engine paired with a VW-sourced 4-speed manual gearbox with reverse. A proprietary drive variator is coupled to the transmission which allows the steering wheel to change the speed of the tracks and turn the vehicle. The seller notes that the front gear wheels were replaced in 2023 along with service of the handbrake, wheel brakes, an oil change, and a new choke cable. The seller adds that the gear wheels may need adjustment as they tend to shutter on dry ground.
This Snow Trac is offered with a bill of sale.

This Snow-Trac is a match to the one shown in ‘The Shining’ movie by Stanley Kubrick with Jack Nicholson and Shelley DuVall when the Overlook manager was giving them a tour of the facilities.
I’ve had 6 wonderful winters of adventure with it here on my meadows.
Best of luck with your bidding.
