Up for auction is this rare, NOS (new-old-stock) Porsche “Typ. 4055 Tachometer" also known as a “300KPH Speedometer".  Porsche introduced this electronic speedometer in 1973.  They were used in several different road-going Porsches as well as a variety of racing models including the 911 RSR and 934.  This example will fit 911 models ranging from 1973-1989 (1969-1972 with electronic wiring reconfiguration).

What makes this Speedometer so special is the fact that it can be found in a number of iconic Porsche models including:

  • 1973-1977 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0
  • 1973-1974 Porsche 911 RS 3.0
  • 1975 Porsche Turbo
  • 1975 Porsche Turbo Carrera RSR (Type 964)
  • 1976-1977 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera 3.0 (European / ROW models only)
  • 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS FIA Group B Rally Car

This Speedometer is in excellent condition and is in like-new condition.  It would also be the perfect speedometer for any back-dated Porsche or for use in the restoration or recreation of any of the models that originally carried one of these.

* It is up to the buyer to decide if this odometer is suitable for their use prior to bidding.

Good day fellow PCAR Ladies and Gentleman,

I just took a closer look at this speedometer and by sliding down the rubber color, I was able to find some additional numbers. I have photographed these and will try to get them uploaded to the photo gallery.

    The numbers are:

    "437. 201/1/16"

    "Imp/km 4055"

    "11.79 T"

It is possible the "11.79 T" may be the assembly date code indicating November of 1979.

All of the numbers are stamped on the main body on the round section of the speedometer and all are under the rubber color other than the "Imp/km 4055."

Please let me know if I can assist further in anyway,

    Bill Noon

@RodSav that is correct RodSav, VDO stopped stamping date codes and went to a blue "inked" in date codes starting in 1969. They also inked in a control and inspection number when the speedometer passed a quality control check before being shipped to Porsche.

This speedometer was part of a spares package acquired new by Vasek Polak for one of his 934 Turbo RSR racers but never fitted to a car. It would have been assembled in late 1975 to mid 1976. It is however used in a large number of Porsche's high end race and road cars, primarily from 1973 to 1978.

If you look in the photo gallery provided and you can see what is left of the blue ink that has faded away over time do to lots of clients visiting and picking it up to check it out while it sat on my desk for many, many years as nothing more than a paper weight.

Let me know how else I can assist and best of luck with the auction,

    Bill Noon

@Bill_Noon thank you. There is no stamp date on the back?

    Good day Nathanbs,

I believe starting in 1969, VDO switched from stamped in date codes to "Blue Ink" inked in date code, control and inspection numbers on the back of their gauges. For sure this occurred by at least in 1973 as I have had more than 100 different 911 Carrera RS 2.7 which I inspect and photograph carefully for these date codes.

This particular speedometer has only faint traces of what is left of the blue inked in information on the back, likely because everyone who has visited my office for the past decade plus always picks up this speedometer to inspect it.

(Take a look in the photo gallery provided and you can see what is left of the blue ink.)

Because this speedometer was bought new by Vasek Polak as part of a spares package for one of his 930 Turbo Carrera RSR (934) models, it would have been assembled very late in 1975 and no later than July of 1976.

These particular VDO units were in regular use from 1973 to 1978 on Porsche's top of the line racers and some of their more special road cars. On at least two later occasions, they were reintroduced on the very low production, 1984 911 SC/RS FIA Group B rally cars and on at least one of the pre-production 959 models in 1987.

This Speedometer will fit without modification in any 911 from 1969 to 1989 but pre-1972 cars will require an electronic modification and or use of a later transmission sending unit.

Please let me know how else I can assist and best of luck with the auction,

    Bill Noon

Good day fellow PCAR Ladies and Gentleman. Let me know if I can assist in anyway with this speedometer. Shipping will be free for any of the lower 48 States and I can provide shipping quotes as needed anywhere else in the world.

The correct name for this speedometer is “Typ. 4055 Tachometer” and as noted above it was primarily designed for Porsches top of the market production GT race cars and several European model road cars.

The photos of the Speedometer in the vehicles show below were all taken by me and I have other photos of the Speedometer in other similar Porsches. The last know use of this type of Speedometer was in at least one of the pre-produciton / prototype 959. Porsche's press photos show it quite clearly.

Best of luck and best wishes to everyone on this auction,

    Bill Noon
