Available for auction is this 2016 Porsche 981 Boxster Spyder finished in Jet Black Metallic over a Black leather interior with silver stitching. It borrows its naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six from the 991 Carrera S and is presented as a lightweight high-performance version of the Boxster. This example features 20” Boxster Spyder Design wheels, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), smoked taillights, and full carbon bucket seats with Porsche fabric correct Pepita inserts. Originally delivered to Canada and imported to the U.S. in 2021, this 981 is now being offered for auction with just over 4k miles on the odometer.

The Boxster Spyder's styling evokes historic Porsche racing cars with its two prominent streamlined fairings along the rear lid. This example comes finished in Jet Black Metallic and has been optioned with a black convertible top, high-gloss black-painted side air intakes and SportDesign exterior mirror lower trims, a body-colored roll bar, and smoked taillights. Rare optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are fitted beneath the 20” Boxster Spyder Design wheels sporting Pirelli P Zero tires. The seller adds that paint protection film has been applied over the full exterior from new, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, Black leather and Alcantara upholstery is complimented by silver deviated stitching, door opening loops, and seatbelts. The optional full bucket seats feature carbon fiber backings and have been customized with Porsche fabric correct Pepita inserts. Other modifications include a 917-style shift knob, hidden radar detector, and bass amplifier with controls. Factory options include the Light Design Package, steering wheel rim in smooth-finish leather, a reversing camera, and the Bose Surround Sound System. The original Alcantara seat inserts are included along with the original shift knob.

The largest and most powerful engine equipped for a Boxster at the time, the naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six in the 981 Spyder delivers up to 375 HP and 309 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The Spyder is equipped as standard with a 20mm lowered Sport Suspension, Sport Exhaust, the Sport Chrono Package, and a limited-slip differential with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV).  Acceleration from 0-60 MPH is achieved in as little as 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 180 MPH. This example has been well-maintained and serviced by an authorized Porsche dealer, records are provided in the CARFAX report.

This sale will include a clean title, the original Alcantara seat insets, the original leather shift knob, two painted keys, and a factory shop towel.

    Thank you all for participation. keith_K you have purchased a wonderful, special car. I was just in Zuffenhausen. The age of sports cars is gone and this platform, that is Boxster Spyder-GT4 is ending very, very soon. This car is one of my favorite cars ever after almost 80 Porsches. Congratulations.

    @McDuff Maybe. But they're not checked on the most recent inspection.

  • McDuff (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @suitcase @vman932

    I would assume the tires are checked red not because of tread depth, but because of age.

    @vman932 I see where Champion checked the red box for the rears . But it is inconsistent with the measurements they recorded. Red is incorrect for the 2021 Inspection. All 4 should all be green. I will post the 2nd page. In the most recent inspection the rears are correct at yellow. Both inspections confirm brake pads at green or more than 50% remaining. There was no recommendation for any service what-so-ever. This is an exceptional car.

  • suitcase (seller) 2 yearsago

    @vman932 Champion is the best dealership I've dealt with in over 30+ years of Porsche. That includes Europe. There is a 2nd page with tire wear. 7-7-7-7.

  • vman932 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @suitcase "Yes pads not rotors. It went from 10-10-10-10 to 7-7-8-8."
    This is an extreme amount of wear for 1800 miles between measurements.

    "Tire tread went from 7-7-7-7 to 7-7-6-6. Uploaded now."
    The inspection dated 12/21/21 does not list individual tread depths, but the green/yellow/red is checked "red" for both tires on the drivers side which indicates less than 3/32". The passenger side is cut off. Is it continued on another page? All the tires pictured are date coded 2015, so I assumed they were original to the car, but that doesn't jive with the two inspection reports. Have you changed the tires during your ownership?

    I've heard nothing but good things about Champion, but they are either doing poor inspections or there is something inconsistent about the brakes and tires.

    @ponchosdad You mean 718? The most surprising thing to me was how similar the 2 cars are. However, maybe it's the sound but the 981 is more fun and more compelling to drive.

  • ponchosdad (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    This seems like a fantastic car...with a really low bid. Are there significant differences between the the 981 and the 918?

    Pcar rejected the pdf upload of earlier report but photo image coming. Yes pads not rotors. It went from 10-10-10-10 to 7-7-8-8. Tire tread went from 7-7-7-7 to 7-7-6-6. Uploaded now.

  • vman932 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @suitcase You stated "The wear in rotors seems consistent with miles." I'm not sure if this was a typo, but I am strictly talking about the pads, not the rotors. The rotors are not measured in thickness, but rather must be removed from the car and have their carbon content tested with a special measuring device.

    I have PCCBs and am very familiar with them, but disagree that this wear is commensurate with mileage. At the current rate, the pads would be down to minimum levels at less than 10k total miles. This is not not typical. The inspection you just posted is from 11/28/22, not the older one. Can you post the older inspection report?

    Thanks

    @vman932
    1. I tried to repost my original Carfax and the Pcar upload would not take it. I sent it to Pcar to post. I will call them.

    2. I'm aware of the GT4 gear issue. I 'm not aware of it on any Spyder. I have owned 6 of these cars with no issues. I have 18k miles car with no issues. I know the previous owner and the car was stored with no issues. I expect the gear is original.

    3. I have two inspection reports from Champion. One from last week and one from when the car was delivered to me. I will post the earlier report. The wear in rotors seems consistent with miles. To the best of my knowledge the car has never been tracked. I will also repost the DME report. You are free to call Doug at Champion to verify the report belongs to this car.

    4. In addition, the PCCB's are well worth the money and extremely rare on a 981 Spyder. The car with 18k has almost identical equipment minus PCCB. There is a noticeable difference in braking (and cleaning) between the two. So much so, I will not order a street car without PCCB's again. Age old question answered for me.

    5. I apologize for the wheel mar. I didn't see it. I will post another close-up photo. There is no other issues that I am aware of. In fact, when I was cleaning and photographing the car, what impressed me was just how flawless the car is. You'd have to find one "in the wrapper" to be cleaner and even then?

  • vman932 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @suitcase
    Thank you for the response and additional pictures. I still don't see the remainder of the carfax though. @PCARMARKET - can you post the full carfax?

    Regarding the transmission, yes it is a great transmission, but some Spyders/GT4s had 3rd gear issues requiring transmission replacement. I just wanted to confirm whether or not this one was original and if it ever exhibited any issues with 3rd gear.

    I assume the inspection report shown in picture 107 was performed at Champion on 11/28/22 along with the DME scan, correct? That inspection shows pad thickness to be 7mm front and 8mm rear. This is a bit puzzling as new thickness is 11~12mm. That is *a lot* of wear for 4k miles. Has the car been tracked? All the identifying information has been cropped from the inspection report. Is it possible the inspection report was from a different car?

    Picture 39 shows curb damage to the passenger front wheel. Is there any damage, imperfections, wear, etc, that is not disclosed?

    Thanks

    @vman932 1. The car is fully wrapped and remains the best "wrap" of any car I own. There is no rainbow or funky edges anywhere.
    2. Current driver's seat left bolster will be posted soon. When taking the photo and opening the door I can also confirm the car smells new.
    3. The Alcantara seat inserts are excellent but they were shrink wrapped protected when I installed Pepita at 2400+/- miles approx. 1 year ago. A photo will be posted of the wrapped inserts and an interior with Alcantara.
    4. It does not have "smart key" and not certain it was available for 981 Spyder.
    5. I believe the Carfax was posted by Pcar. I will post my copy from purchase.
    6. The transmission, gearbox , is original. And I can add that the box is excellent and is the joy of this car. The only better Porsche box I know is the 911R. The 981 Spyder (and GT4) is very close to R.

  • vman932 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @suitcase
    The description states "paint protection film has been applied over the full exterior from new". Can you please confirm this indeed *full car*, not just *full front*.

    Can you please post pictures of the outer bolster on the driver's seat?

    Can you please post pictures of the alcantera seat inserts?

    It does not appear to have entry & drive (smart key). Can you please confirm?

    Only 2 pages of the carfax was posted. Can you please post the remaining page(s)?

    Is the transmission original to the car?

    Thanks

    @ibmiked There is an adjustment that combines rake and height. I have these seats in new 718 Spyder, another 981 Spyder and 911 R. I have had no problems in many miles and continue to order them with each new car.

  • ibmiked (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    A question for the seller. On my 987 Spyder the bucket seats were not adjustable for rake. Did that change on this generation? I loved the look of the seats, but it wasn't always easy to get comfortable.

  • TeamSled (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    @suitcase I’m not certain but I think it was not included at purchase but was an option to the consumer.

    Nice car!

    @jh986s I've owned and driven almost every GT car and RS over the last 30+ years...including a well driven 959 and a 911R. The 981 Spyder is underrated and undervalued. I have another 981 Spyder (without brakes) and a new 718. It is heartbreaking for me to sell any one of them. It is everything a Porsche should be; fast lighter than any other contemporary car and fun. I chased this car for 3 years. Finding one with brakes, low miles, Bose, Seats and camera (not DOT mandate in '16) was impossible. A week after the deal was finally made, Porsche offered me a PTS 718 Spyder. These cars are going away...very soon. The decision to sell the black car, this one, was strictly based on logistics. It's in Florida and I'm in Florida. I cannot express my love for these cars.

  • jh986s (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    number 420 of 830 built. The best of the best from Porsche, in my opinion. But this car needs to be driven, these are so much fun on the street

    @Stdenis25 I have no knowledge regarding Canadian import rules. However, I expect since it was originally imported and duty was paid, it can go back.

  • Stdenis25 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

    Can you confirm if this is eligible for duty free import back to Canada based on when it was exported?
    Thanks,

  • Alphaboy1 2 yearsago

    Very nice car! I had 2 Boxster S model's 986 s and 987s and were excellent cars. The 987 and 981 Spyders were awesome and extremely capable cars. The mid-engine layout and power makes these and awesome track beast.
