Up for auction is this limited-production 2012 Porsche 987.2 Cayman R finished in Guards Red over a black and leather and Alcantara interior.  The Cayman R is desired by many due to its lightness, rigidity, and upgraded performance above other Cayman models.  This highly optioned U.S example has been in the hands of the current owner since 2013 and is now being offered in excellent condition out of Canada with 67k kilometers/42k miles on the odometer.

The striking Guards Red paint is said to remain in excellent condition with an application of clear paint protection film covering the front bumper, hood, and front fenders.  Please view the detailed images in the photo gallery.  The Cayman R highlights traditional race-inspired exterior features from the factory including a fixed rear wing, aluminum doors, and a 0.8” lower ride height with stiffer springs which improves handling and provides for a more aggressive stance.  This Cayman sits on a set of 19” Porsche lightweight SportDesign wheels which come wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires that are one year old in the front and two years old in the rear.

Upon entering the cockpit, the driver is situated in carbon fiber Sport bucket seats that come wrapped in black leather with Alcantara inserts.  The seller reports the interior to be in excellent factory condition with minor wear on the driver’s seat bolster.  Nicely spec’d when ordered new this Cayman R commanded an MSRP of over $80k USD and features options such as:

  • Automatic A/C
  • Cup Holder
  • Bluetooth®
  • Sport Chrono Package Plus
  • BOSE® Surround Sound System
  • SiriusXM™ Sat Radio Tuner
  • Floor Mats
  • Universal Audio Interface
  • PCM with Navigation
  • Sports Exhaust System
  • Cayman R Logo
  • Preparation for Radio

The Cayman R features a robust 3.4-liter flat-six engine that produces 330 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque.  The R model utilizes a unique engine tuning process which helps to produce an additional 10 HP over a standard Cayman S. Additionally, this example is equipped with a Sports exhaust system which makes for a more aggressive exhaust note.  Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed desirable manual transmission.  All in all, the Cayman R combines the usability of a long-distance cruiser with the high-performance characteristic’s enthusiasts would expect from Porsche. The seller notes the car is up-to-date on maintenance with scheduled services always performed at Porsche of London, ON.

The sale will include two keys, books, Porsche battery tender, car cover, WeatherTech floor mats, and a clean Carfax report.

@zachlangan - interestingly enough, they wanted me to pay duties but I threw their own form back in their face at CBP, it was escalated to a supervisor, and he was the one I didn't owe anything. I had a shock that I would have to pay the full 2.5% despite my research and efforts, but ultimately did not have to. This was in late April 2019 at the border going from Ontario to Michigan (Detroit). I could tell it was fairly lawless how they tried to collect duties though, so definitely want to urge US buyers to stand up for themselves.

@RumbleAuto @stevetheodore many times the people processing these things don't understand every minute detail, so it's entirely plausible the 3 year rule exists yet some vehicles have made it through. I would pursue trying not to pay them, forcing CBP to tell me if they are required. That said, since my last post here, the 2nd import broker confirmed the same thing - duties will be absolutely due. It's not a deal killer, but my bid has to reflect the potential I'll be paying. The brokers that confirmed this were Karol at Livingston International and Adam (Vice-President) at TFX International. I don't think anyone is being misleading - I just think some cars have probably made it through without import duties even if they should have been paid. Either that, or people are paying when they shouldn't. Real world experiences are not always by the book. The discussion about import duties here is making it seem like a bigger deal than it really is, so my apologies in contributing to that. Whether they're due or not, the import duties shouldn't deter any potential buyer.

@RumbleAuto @stevetheodore Thanks for the confirmation. This was my understanding as well....not sure what those brokers are talking about.

For those who want to skip the back & fourth - YES this car is very easily brought back to the US duty-free.

  • RumbleAuto (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@Jarod964 this is exactly how I interpreted the CBPs rules in 2019 when I re-imported my 997.1 GT2. I did not have to pay any duties on the car as it was formerly from the USA but lived north of the border for several years.

  • RumbleAuto (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@zachlangan unless the rules have changed in the last year I don't think that is true regarding the car being dutiable again beyond 3 years. I'll have to double check but I'm nearly sure my 997.1 GT2 lived north of the border for longer than 3 years when I bought it last year and I was able to avoid all duties by proving it was formerly a US registered car.

  • zachlangan (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@Jarod964 the response from one of the customs brokers was that if the vehicle has been out of the country for more than 3 years, it's 100% dutiable.

  • zachlangan (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@Jarod964 well that is good news and contradicts the separate advice of 2 brokers, despite me making it clear the vehicle was originally sold and registered in the US. One from Livingston and the other from TFX, which are generally well-known and respected brokers. Perhaps there's a caveat? Reading the CBP site and the section your excerpt is from, it doesn't specify if it's being re-imported by the same person that exported it out of the US or not. Otherwise these brokers are giving bad info.

  • Jarod964 (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@zachlangan I think you've misunderstood about re-importing a US car back to the US. As long as you can prove the car was at one time registered in the US, you will not pay duty on the car. Duty would have been paid when the car was initially brought to the US and does not apply a second time. I have done this multiple times.

Straight from CBP: "A vehicle taken from the United States for non-commercial, private use may be returned duty free by proving to CBP that it was previously owned and registered in the United States."

  • zachlangan (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@Jarod964 @DGRAY I'm located in the US (Texas) and have done the research over last couple weeks regarding import/customs duties, shipping and sales tax, and have also verified my findings with 2 separate import brokers this week.

Sales tax is due on EVERY purchased vehicle, even when bought/sold for the 14th time within the same state. For me in Texas, the total fees (including 5% auction fees) are north of 14% of sales price, then shipping on top of that.

@Jarod964 import duties will need to be paid on the car because it is a foreign-made vehicle, regardless if it was first sold in the US. This info is available online through CBP and I've verified with 2 customs brokers. The only time import duty doesn't apply is to North American-made vehicles, or military/government employee, or a foreign-national and ONLY if they'll have the car in US for less than one year, no exceptions.

The only benefit of this being a US-sold car is reducing the burden of proving it is US compliant for the DOT and EPA approvals that'll be needed for import.

    @57nate Hi again.
I have checked my files and have no records of that. I did purchase this through the Porsche dealer and did have a lien search done on it. I did purchase it in Texas so I would think any taxes owing would have had to have been if owing by me at purchase.
    I hope that helps.

  • Jarod964 (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@57nate I assume you are inquiring about US taxes to aid in a duty-free re-import to the US. The carfax alone showing US registration records should satisfy their criteria for re-import. It has in the past for me. Hope that might help.

  • DGRAY (seller) 4 years, 4 monthsago

@57nate Hi. Yes the digital speedometer changes to miles. And the temp to Fahrenheit.
I will check for records when I get home from work. But I don’t think I have those records or that information.
    Let you know later today.
    Daryl

  • 57nate (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

Will the speedometer display in MPH? Do you have registration or other records from the first owner that shows proof that US taxes were paid on the car?

  • DGRAY (seller) 4 years, 4 monthsago

    @zachlangan Hi Zach.
Thanks for the interest in the R!
I will answer your questions as best I can in order.
I took more pictures but I do not know how to upload to this site. But I would gladly send them to you?
    1. Yes both front spoilers have parking lot curb damage with the paint scraped off after 8 years of parking in a hospital parking lot!
    This is paintable.
    2. Yes there is a small indent above and below the left from grill. And the driver side area as you see in pictures.
    4. There is no dent or damage on driver side panel above the rear wheel. I took a picture of that as well.
    5. I took the license plate off and took a picture for you but I see no damage.
    6. I just cleaned up around one side of the exhaust. The dust does wipe off with just water. I think a polish would clean it right up.
    7. The gray line was a water dirt streak. (Sorry). My cleaning skills only go so far.
I also tried my best to take under spoiler shots. But the car is very low so not the best quality.
All theses small blemishes are from 8 years of driving and parking this vehicle. It has NEvER been in a crash.
I hope I have answered all your questions. Glad to get the pictures to you but not sure how?

  • zachlangan (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

Interested in buying but questions about some of the damage. Can you confirm the following:

    1) It looks like BOTH front spoiler lips have damage.
    2) Looks like damage above and below front bumper grill on driver (left) side.
    3) Damage on front bumper on passenger side of license plate.
    4) Is there a dent on driver side rear quarter panel above the rear wheel?
    5) Any damage behind front license plate? Can you remove and take a pic?
    6) The grime on each side of exhaust tip will wipe off or stuck in bumper paint?
    7) The gray/white line below driver door. Is that damage or grease from door hinge?
    8) Any other exterior/interior damage not displayed in photos?

Thanks for taking the time to address these things above. Wanted to ask early while still time. Also, do you have any photos underneath the car, especially under front bumper and/or oil pan area?

@Caymanorcarrera Sorry spell check? out perform a carrera

  • DGRAY (seller) 4 years, 4 monthsago

    @Caymanorcarrera Hi.
Yes it is the front passenger side.
Sorry for not making that more apparent in the pictures. The paint is scraped.
You’re right. Certainly not a deal breaker I think!!
And.......it should be Cayman!! This car will our perform a careers any day of the week and twice on Sunday!!
I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed driving this car!
It would be a track rock star!
    Cheers
    Daryl

  • Caymanorcarrera (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

Never mind.......I think I see it on the passenger side, inner corner..........it's not an issue for me........this car checks SOOOO many boxes for me.

  • Caymanorcarrera (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

The car is awesome, and should get TONS of attention.

It's customary to portray flaws graphically, although I question whether this will even register n my radar, since I think it would be a travesty NOT to put this car on track. You mention a scuffed front lip spoiler, but I don't see any picture of it.

    GLWA.........I hope you won't regret this (-:

  • Jarod964 (registered bidder) 4 years, 4 monthsago

Bid with confidence, this is a nice one and has been well maintained.

Whoever buys this car is in for a treat. As a former owner of an R , having had the pleasure to drive the car in many DE events and road trips . The car is reliable and urges you to use it to your maximum ability. I can still hear and feel how it made me feel everytime that I started it up. I have sellers remorse . You will have no regrets buying this car.

  • DGRAY (seller) 4 years, 4 monthsago

Daryl, WOW, she is a beauty. I’ve been looking for a 911, but the Red Rocket is amazing and unique that I may have to switch to getting a Cayman. Good luck with the auction. - Brian

  • DGRAY (seller) 4 years, 4 monthsago

Hello everyone and thanks for viewing this beautiful”red rocket” Cayman R.
I am the owner of this rare beauty. My name is Daryl and I welcome you to the auction!
I have owned this car since 2013. I am the second owner. This car has never been raced. Never been driven in the winter. And always stored inside. It is a solid vehicle that will never disappoint you. All maintenance has been done through Porsche dealerships.
All maintenance times have been adhered to.
This is the nicest ride I have ever had the pleasure to have! But now it’s time to let someone else enjoy this rare vehicle.
This has been my baby and I have done everything to care for it responsibly.
Full disclosure, the front wing has paint scrape due to it being so low and parking curbs being “too high”.
You will absolutely love being in this car and will be thrilled with the effortless drive down the road with the stability this car provides.
When you push the sport mode button and hear the muffler gates open the roar from that motor will send a shiver down your spine!
Congratulations to the lucky person that gets to take this baby home. You will never regret owning this collectors edition; one year only produced engineering marvel!
    Best of luck!
    Cheers
    Daryl
