The most performance-focused variant of the Porsche 987, the Cayman R features an exterior Aerokit, 19” lightweight forged wheels, a special lightweight interior, a lowered sport-tuned suspension, a limited-slip differential, and a 330-horsepower 3.4-liter flat-six engine. This 2012 example is finished in Black over a matching leather and Alcantara interior. It comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, carbon fiber sport bucket seats, red seatbelts and door pulls, silver exterior contrasts, optional automatic air conditioning, and Sound Package Plus. Showing approximately 7k miles on the odometer, this rare 6-speed Cayman R is now being offered for auction out of Connecticut.
Compared to a standard 987.2 Cayman S, the R version features lightweight aluminum doors, front splitters, black rear badging, darkened headlamp housings, black dual center-mounted exhaust tips, and a fixed rear spoiler. This example is finished in Black (041) with silver Porsche logo side stripes and contrast on the mirrors, side air intakes, and rear spoiler. Equipment includes LED taillights and daytime running lights, integrated fog lights, clear side marker lenses, red brake calipers, and silver 19” lightweight forged wheels dressed in Pirelli P Zero tires. The seller indicates the right rear quarter panel has been refinished, and clear paint protection film is applied over the full front end. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing “moderate damage” to the rear and right-rear sides of the car in 2015.
The Black interior features carbon fiber-backed sport bucket seats in leather and Alcantara upholstery, complemented by red seatbelts, lightweight cloth door pulls, and body-colored trim pieces. Other accessories include a three-spoke leather SportDesign steering wheel, a unique hoodless instrument cluster, model logos on the door sills, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, a central locking system, and Sound Package Plus with Bluetooth and a Porsche CDR-30 audio system.
Rated at 330 HP, the Cayman R’s mid-mounted 3.4-liter flat-six engine offers an increase of 10 HP over a contemporary Cayman S. Power is distributed to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. Standard equipment includes a 20mm lowered suspension with stiffer springs and sway bars, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Automatic Brake Differential (ABD), and fixed 4-piston calipers with cross-drilled brake discs at each corner.
This sale will include a window sticker, owner’s manuals, and a clean title.

Thank you very much for posting those additional paint meter readings of the quarter panel and the door. It does appear that both were repainted and that’s very helpful to know. Much appreciated.

@dawgfan1214 I am trying to piece what I can from my experince. I am not privy to what happened 10 years ago. I am going to see if I can use a different meter just to see what I get as well. Stay tuned.
@skedaddle Thanks for the updates and clarification. I appreciate the additional paint meter readings. Could you please provide 3-4 additional readings all around the damaged area and where the door was blended? This will help. Thank you.
One question though, you said the only evidence on the car is of one panel being painted. But in that same reply you said they painted the panel and blended it in with the door. Wouldn’t that then make it 2 panels that were actually painted on the car and not 1?
A complete walk-around video of the vehicle, including all meter readings, has been provided and should be uploaded any minute now. As previously mentioned, PCAR has encountered issues uploading the additional meter readings.
For those who know me, you’ll know that I’m one of the most transparent dealers in the business. To back that up, I’ve offered to reimburse up to $500 for a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) if the car is found to be materially different from how I’ve described it.
On the Carfax Report:
Carfax uses an algorithm that can sometimes misrepresent the severity or nature of reported incidents. As a long-time Carfax client, I’ve seen firsthand how things work behind the scenes. While Carfax pulls data from police reports and public records, how a body shop writes an estimate can significantly impact what shows up on the report.
For example, I once sent a car with minor scrapes on the front lip to a body shop. The car had a clean Carfax at the time. However, once the body shop wrote an estimate to repaint the front bumper, the vehicle showed up on Carfax just days later with "damage reported" — despite having no paintwork done yet.
Certain shop management systems feed directly into Carfax, which can create situations where repairs are flagged incorrectlt. I've also seen vehicles with “accident reported” status that never actually had paintwork or structural repairs.
Regarding This Vehicle:
Roughly 10 years ago, there was damage to the right rear quarter. Whatever occurred, it was repaired impeccably — there are no signs of poor workmanship, and the vehicle presents beautifully today. We are fully aware of the stigma a Carfax blemish can bring, and we’ve priced the car accordingly. And that’s precisely where the opportunity lies for a savvy buyer.
If you can see past the Carfax, someone is going to get an exceptional deal on a pristine, low-mileage example.
I’m going to take a back seat as this auction is between bidders and the seller. That said, there is no damage to the undercarriage or mechanical parts. All have original factory markings.
Good luck with the sale of this great car. Paint meter reading and DME should help.
@dawgfan1214 The only evidence of anything on this car is one painted panel. the whole panel does not even show as being painted. My guess is it was a small repair and the panel and part of the door were blended. You will see by video we are uploading now.
Additional paint meter readings have been added to the listing gallery. A few of the original files did not load correctly so they have been re-added into the listing. Thank you
And now we have the previous owner and his friend telling us, “No, just believe us. Everything is great. The car is perfect.” Yet the empirical facts are outstanding. All may be good here, but please post the paint meter reading of every panel … in more than one location per panel … along with the Over Rev report and we can let the facts speak for themselves. Just continues to be an odd way to run an auction.
Also, the friend states he’s “seen under carriage pics of the damage during the purchase process…” which seems to indicate that there was indeed damage that you could see from the underside of the car. If that’s the case, per his own words, then this would indeed fall into the moderate category as currently listed by CarFax. That would not be minor.
@SKEDADDLE I can corroborate the story as I accompanied the prior owner to buy the first Spyder that started the chain of trades resulting in this sale. Duane stepped in during a pinch to facilitate the trade of the Cayman R on the manual Spyder that replaced this car.
During the Cayman PPI, the car was put on a lift and wheels were removed to inspect the repair. I've put eyes on the car and the bodywork is unnoticeable in my opinion.
Prior owner is a stickler for perfection, some would say to a fault. I would not hesitate buying this car.
@ap 1. If you see the first paint meter reading photo it is the drivers side rear quarter panel. That shows no paint work detected with a reading of 3.36 mils.
2. The next photo shows the roof which shows no paint work detected and reading of 3.88 mils.
3. The 3rd photo shows the hood and it shows a reading of 9.76 because of the PPF which is about 3 mills. The hood has not been painted.
4. The next photo is the passenger side front fender and it shows a reading 9.84 becuse of the PPF which is about 3 mils. There is no on this panel.
5. The passenger side door shows no paint work and a reading of 6.24
6. The next reading shows shows the drivers side fender with a reading of 9.04 which also has ppf and not been painted.
Appearently uploading the the the second batch of pictures they did not all get uploaded. I am calling Pcar right now.
Like @dawgfan1214 I am curious as to why you are not posting paintmeter reading of the accident related areas. Most auctions I have followed post 20-40+ photos of paint meter readings. You have posted 7. My experience with Carfax is they will not make a change to the severity of an accident without substantial proof to the contrary. The value in these cars is originality and a clear history. You also mentioned an over rev report would be made available, which is important as it speaks to the health of the motor. Many of these cars were tracked heavily. For reference ;

The previous owner is a personal friend and probably the most thorough collector I know. I drove this car 1x to help move some vehicles around it was everything you would expect. I drive a 2012 Cayman S for comparison. I’ve seen under carriage pics of the damage during his purchase process and no concerns came from any of the PPI process. Bid with confidence.
I only sold the car to make room for a manual 987.2 Spyder. Otherwise, the R would still be in my garage.
Dropping a quick comment..
I owned this car for a period of time earlier this year. Despite the car’s CarFax history, the paintwork was flawless and the car looked and drove like new during my ownership. I’d have no hesitation in recommending the car to other buyers.
Just curious why you originally only provided paint meter readings for the doors forward if you knew the damage was to the rear? I’ve never seen anyone provide only partial paint meter readings, especially leaving out the main panels in question. Just seems like an odd choice.

@ap will get you done report Monday am. I cannot confirm if the bumbrt was replaced but the paint on rear deck is factory, will send you meter for that Monday am. The accident happened 10 years ago. The only ounce of paintwork is on the fender as disclosed. Our meter detects body filler as well and there is none. There is no frame damage either. My intuition is this was a minor ding to the panel which was painted and whomever owned it at the time milked the claim which is why carfax is showing as a moderate. I have been fighting with carfax on this one to get the language changed.
If anyone wants a PPI on this car at the Porsche store of their choice and the car is not as described I will reimburse 100 percent of the PPI up to $500.00
This car is pristine
Bid in the amount of $26,000
@SKEDADDLE A couple of questions:
- Were you able to get the DME?
- Was the rear bumper replaced in the accident?
- Can you provide paint meter readings of the rear hatch?
Thanks.
@gf2020 thank you for sharing and we hope in a few days someone here will be the lucky owner this 7000 mile gem
This car was sold on BaT in April for $65K. And was previously listed here on Pcarmarket in late 2022.
These are great cars, and this one has the desirable LWBS, which is found in fewer than half of the cars.

GLWA!
@Patrick3000 Yes so the prior owner is a Pcar enthisuast who owns a 996 GT2 as well as a 996 GT3, was desperately seeking to add a drop top to his collection. He purchased a 2011 Spyder from is in PDK. After purchasing it he did not PDK and came across this Cayman R in Manual although not his top choice because he really wanted convertible he traded the spyder for the Cayman R.
A week later a spyder which is what he really wanted, in manual with a/c and radio delete came up for sale in California which was his dream spec and we helped him faciltate the purchase of that.
@seller you said that you know the previous owner personally, why did owner #5 sell after only three months? TY
Hi everyone, tons of more pictures being uploaded the shortly as well as paint meter readings. The only panel that meters high, which the meter shows 7.88 an is the right rear quarter panel which was repainted in 2015. PPF adds around 6 mills to the reading. Working on DME report
@jh986s Shelton CT, you are welcome to get a pre purchase inspection. We are close to Porsche of Fairfield.
@pm2207 I will work on getting DME report and post it.
Hi everyone, my name is Duane and I am the owner of the dealership. Thank you, everyone, for bidding. The tow hook cover is there, not sure why it was not present in the pictures. The car is located at our dealership in Shelton, CT, and anyone who wants can view it in person or schedule a test drive.
I cannot confirm whether the car has been tracked, except to say the prior owner, whom I knew, never tracked it. Based on the pristine condition of the car it does not seem like a car that has been tracked. The entire front has PPF, and there are no signs of wear on it. As mentioned, this car is pristine; the interior smells new and does not show any signs of wear.
Tow hook cover looks like it is missing in the front. Did the car get tracked? Would it be possible to post a DME report? Thanks
Bid in the amount of $25,000
Is the car in Chicago? Where can it be seen?
