Topping the range of the 987 generation, the Cayman R offers enhanced driving dynamics with a special sport-tuned suspension, an exterior Aerokit package, and extensive weight-saving measures. This 2012 Cayman R is finished in Black over a matching interior and pairs a desirable 6-speed manual transmission with its naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six. It also includes the Sport Chrono Package, Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering, Sound Package Plus with Storage, automatic air conditioning, and more. This Cayman R is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut showing just over 11k miles on the odometer.
Finished in Black, this Cayman R features lightweight aluminum door panels, Aerokit front splitters, and a fixed carbon fiber rear wing. Details include a silver-painted rear wing, side air inlets & mirrors, black-framed headlights, and lightweight forged 19” Boxster Spyder wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The seller has added custom red “Cayman R” side stripes. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report.
The black leather interior features carbon fiber folding bucket seats with Alcantara center inserts. Equipment includes RS-style door panels with red lightweight pull straps and red seatbelts along with body-color trim pieces, a three-spoke SportDesign steering wheel, and a hoodless instrument cluster. This example features optional automatic air conditioning, automatically dimming mirrors, a rain sensor, a CDR-30 Audio System, a Bluetooth receiver, a Universal Audio Interface, the Sound Package Plus with Storage, and floor mats. The seller notes that a fire extinguisher has been fitted to the driver’s side and a K40 radar system has been installed. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be in proper working order.
Powered by a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six engine, the Cayman R sends up to 330 HP and 273 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. The Sport Chrono Package has been optioned and acceleration from 0-60 MPH is achievable in approximately 4.9 seconds, going on to reach a claimed top speed north of 170 MPH. Standard performance features include VarioCam Plus, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), a Sports suspension lowered by 20mm compared to a standard Cayman S, and a stainless-steel exhaust system. The seller reports a new battery was installed in April of 2024.
This sale will include the owner’s manuals, a window sticker, a toolkit, some documentation, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “With perfect specifications, this 2012 Porsche Cayman R is one of only 1421 built. It is one of only 563 imported to the United States. Black with contrasting silver wheels, side view mirrors, and rear wing, over black Alcantara, and black carpeting. It has been driven only 11,088 miles since new. It has a 3.4-liter 6-cylinder engine with 330 horsepower and the very desirable 6-speed manual transmission. Unlike the normal Cayman, the “R” is a track day toy with race-bred suspension, aluminum doors and hood, a gutsy engine roar, and effective aero add-ons. Options include Automatic Dimming Mirrors, Bi-Xenon w/ Cornering Lights, Fixed Rear Spoiler, Bluetooth, Floor Mats, CDR 30 Audio System, Sound Package, Universal Audio Interface, Automatic Air-Conditioning, Sport Chrono Package, Red Seat Belts, Red Cloth Door Pulls, and Carbon Fiber Sport Bucket Seats. Owned by a long-time avid Porsche collector since December 2012, this car has never been on the track. It has been serviced regularly. New tires were installed at 10,000 miles, and a new 80-amp battery was installed in April 2024. Low mileage examples are getting increasingly more difficult to find, and this is a rare gem. Complete with all books, tools, window sticker, and two keys. Tasteful additions include custom “Cayman R” red side stripes, and a K40 built-in radar system.”

@gpmotors Congratulations! You bought a fantastic car. We will be in touch.
Sold for $76,500
Lol. Good snag @gpmotors. I wanted it as a track toy, so still needed room for mods. Beautiful R.
Beautiful car. Congrats Grand Prix. Would have liked to have seen a DME and paint meter photos.
@jreifler not unless i keep it for myself
I don't know if it's a "bargain" over 80. But we'll find out in a few days when it hits GP's site.
Not often is even a good low mile S offered, and when one becomes available they're usually about 60K. Still a screaming bargain now.
Come on, guys, this's a $80,000 Cayman R with only 11K mi on it !
Theses cars will only go up in values.
Nicest one I've seen
This is the most expensive cayman R i've bought lol

@gpmotors These seats are original to the car. There are no other seats.
That's correct @themachinestl. Again, if it's the dealer I think, they will either sell buckets for 15-18 and list this for 85, or list for 90.
Reserve has been lifted. Car is selling TODAY. Good luck!
@gpmotors buckets were standard, anything else was optional.

If a dealer is willing to put 73K plus 5% into this, it is pretty clear there is plenty of room above the sum of those numbers.
@seller build sheet on this car says it doesn't come with buckets from the factory. Do you still have the originall seats?

@911SSS Thanks to lower back problems starting as a much younger man, I've been doing the "plop" ("bass ackwards") into the driver's seat of my 911 (all of my cars really) for years! No problem getting in and out. Once you're in you're good to GO!
P.S.: Even after hours behind the wheel, I have never experienced fatigue in Porsche (which is, after all, Recaro) seating. Believe me, the Porsche sport seats in this Cayman R are comfortable & terrific.

@westhigh I think the GT3 may be a bit more difficult. Whatever it takes to get into and out of these cars is worth it!
Honest question. Is it harder to get out of your Cayman or the GT3?
Bid in the amount of $35,000
Thank you all for your positive comments. This car is even more beautiful in person and extremely enjoyable to drive. Today is the final day of the auction so please let me know if you have any questions I can help answer.
@cholz Thank you for your interest. There are no additional maintenance records other than what was provided. The maintenance history is shown in the carfax report. There have been no major issues with the car, just routine annual maintenance. There is no DME report available. The custom red stripes are removable if desired.
@Glickster That was not this GT3 that you saw. Thank you for the positive feedback.
@911SSS
Do you have any more maintenance records? Do you have a DME report available? Is the custom red side stripes a vinyl wrap?
Thanks

Did I see that blue GT3 at a Lime Rock track day in April?
Beautiful R btw. Obviously well cared for.
@Jreifler There is no PPF on the car. Let me know if I can help answer any other questions. Thank you.
@9111SSS - Can't tell from pics whether the car has any PPF ?
@themachinestl - All 997 “GT2” RoW and US buckets fold forward. Look at pic 91. That leather pull strap on the top / back of the seat pulls and allows it to fold forward. There are no adjustments otherwise.
Bid in the amount of $30,000
Very special car, and well presented by the seller. Nice to get glimpses of its brothers and sisters in the driveway :). I've been on the hunt for a 997 Boxster Spyder, but this is very tempting.
@pgoldman No problem! Happy to help answer any questions you or others may have.
@911SSS Thx. My father always told me to read more carefully!
@pgoldman Yes it does have PSM. Picture #111 is the window sticker and you can see it mentioned under the Technical/Mechanical section.
@jcbarrios2003 The carbon bucket seats are original to the car.
Does this R have PSM? Don’t believe I saw it mentioned. Thx.
@Seller does the sale includes the original seats that came spec with the car? Thanks
Bid in the amount of $15,000
Bid in the amount of $12,500
Although picture 95 does show the seat folded forward.
As a Cayman R owner myself, I can attest to the smiles per miles of this car. It seems to almost read my mind. Mine has the carbon fiber bucket seats also, but the "folding" part is something about which I am not aware. I think they're not even adjustable for rake angle.
I'd expect that this will go for all the money. Still it's a bit sad to me to see it's never seen the track - certainly the right thing for valuation, but tough to put a price on the smiles per mile it would have generated on track day. GLWTA!
fabulous car - been on my wish list. I’m currently logged into ChatGPT asking for it to write some reasons why I bought it that my wife will find valid and accept!
