Now up for auction is this 2010 Porsche 997.2 GT3 finished in Black.  In 2009, Porsche introduced the second generation of the 997 GT3 with revised aerodynamics and a larger 3.8L direct fuel injected flat-six engine. One of a reported 654 examples sold in the United States, this 2010 GT3 was sold new from Suncoast Motorsports Porsche in Florida at an original sticker price of over $136k.  It came factory optioned with a 6-speed manual transmission, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), Sport Chrono Package, and a black full leather interior with Adaptive Sport Seats, instrument dials in Carrara White, and extended leather upholstery from Porsche’s Exclusive Department.  Acquired by the current owner in 2017, this rare and highly collectible 997.2 GT3 is now being offered for auction out of Pennsylvania with approximately 10k miles showing on the odometer.

This GT3 is finished in nonmetallic Black and was treated to a full professional paint correction process upon the owner’s purchase in 2017 as well as an application of ceramic coating over the full exterior and clear paint protection film over the front valence.  Additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  Compared with the first-generation 997 GT3, the 997.2 version debuted slightly revised bodywork, new LED lighting, and a modified rear spoiler for improved aerodynamics.  This 2010 example features yellow PCCB calipers which can be seen behind the factory 19” GT3 center-lock wheels dressed in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires dated from 2014.

Inside, this GT3 showcases a black full leather interior with Exclusive options including a rear center console in leather, rooflining in leather, and instrument dials in Carrara White.  Other factory options include the A-Pillar Leather Interior Package, Adaptive Sport Seats with Driver Memory, Sport Chrono Package, a fire extinguisher, Dynamic Cornering Lights, and Sound Package Plus.  The interior is described by the seller to have been very well preserved with all gauges and accessories remaining fully functional.

This 997.2 GT3 features a naturally aspirated 3.8L flat-six engine with direct fuel injection and an output of up to 435 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission, which allows this GT3 to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in approximately 4 seconds with a top speed of over 190 MPH.  This example came optioned with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) which offer superior stopping power and fade resistance.  A Shark Werks race exhaust system has also been installed, and the original exhaust is said to accompany the sale as well.  Some maintenance records are included, and the seller reports all scheduled services to have been carried out by authorized Porsche dealerships as of 4/13/21.

This sale will include a set of two keys, factory books, car cover, battery charger and a clean title.  One of the most desirable models of the 997 series, this rare and well-equipped second-generation GT3 would make a fine addition to any Porsche collection.

Feels a bit like the calm before the storm. I expect a lot of action into the closing minutes. Usually cars of this caliber are traded privately through brokers and out of the public's view. This is a unique opportunity for someone with no connections to obtain a relatively rare car.

  • TubeGuy (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

FAL is not needed and as others have said can tend to fail. After a couple days you get the hang of it and know what to do. My trial by fire happened over 20 years ago when I drove my Ferrari 355 home from the dealer and badly damaged the front bumper. The 997.2 GT3's front air splitter is low but easy to deal with. I wouldn't sweat it.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

I wanted to let you all know that I have removed the reserve and this car will be sold today.

A quick thank you to all who have commented and shown interest. It is a great tribe to be a part of.

Best of luck to those who are bidding, 5 hours to go!

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@SierraMike thanks so much for your kind words. I certainly concur with all of your points below.

I would add one other thought. While Porsche has, with great effort, done better than most at retaining the spirit of the earlier cars, I feel this was more than the end of an era for Porsche. These were the end of an era for "sports cars" in general. They were faced with the choice of becoming a car company or perish. They have for sure become a better car company, profits define this. Have they succeeded in making a better sports car for the road? I'll leave this to the crowd to decide, but I would submit that the pivot to using Ring times to define better isn't an accident.

  • SierraMike (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

I’m the original owner of my 997.2 GT3 and it’s a car I will never let go. Porsche made instant classics of every preceding GT3 iteration when it launched the 991.1 GT3 which was designed to “increase bandwidth” in the words of Andreas Preuninger. In other words, Porsche wanted to increase volume by making the GT3 more accessible. Porsche replaced the hydraulic steering with electromechanical steering, removed the manual gearbox in favour of PDK and replaced the Mezger engine with a derivative from the regular Carrera. The ultimate analogue GT3 was the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0. Although not an RS, this car is not far behind.

The 997.2 GT3 has an abundance of analogue charm that none of the GT3s that followed could match. I owned both the 991.1 and 991.2 GT3s and drove them back to back with the 997.2. The 991.2 is much better, in my opinion, than the 991.1 which I didn’t care for at all. However, they don’t compare with the 997.2 and were ultimately sold.

Compare production numbers and it’s plain to see that pre-991 GT3s were built and supplied in smaller numbers. If you like driving, there’s very few modern cars that can match the experience of driving the 997.2 GT3.

Good luck with auction and my best to the new owner; he/she is going to love it.

@KvN great article. for sure the gentleman that wrote this piece has a better vantage point than I do, but I must say that when I was in the market for a 997.2 GT3 4 or 5 year ago, truly good ones never got close to the mid 80s. My observation has been that the very best examples have not had anywhere near the downside price volatility that the model in general has.

@PCARMARKET in addition to the photos/video that hit this morning, keep your eye out for the following to be uploaded later today.

    1) Photo of original tires supplied by factory to be included with sale for those with visions of Pebble Beach 2075 competition.
    2) photos of undercarriage to show the general level of cleanliness of this car. This includes the engine as well as suspension and brake components of all 4 corners. Consider these knowing the underside of this car has never been detailed.

    @JakeMacZ no worries.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@GlennG on the coolant line issue, what you articulated below were my thoughts precisely. sometimes the cure is worse than the disease, particularly if you don't intend to use these for track duty.

  • JakeMacZ 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Porschitis Thx for your prompt response!

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@JakeMacZ You can tell that this car has the updated (recall done) center lock bolts by their lack of the tightening torque printed on them. The original recalled parts had "500 NM" printed on them as part of the round script.
I know this is controversial and this is just my personal opinion, but I would never take the engine out of a 10k mile GT3 to have the coolant lines pinned proactively. There are cars with 5 to 10 times more miles than this one that are running on unpinned lines without a problem. I would only consider pinning if the car were to be used for extensive track use. Some tracks actually require this. I would not do the procedure for a street driven car unless it actually needed it. The odds of damaging something during an engine removal are greater than the risk of springing a leak from an unpinned line.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

I have just uploaded a daily dose of information/entertainment to PCar. keep an eye out for the following to be posted.
1)photo of stock exhaust system included with sale
2)photo of all books/marketing materials included with sale
3)photo of custom fitted, padded car cover included with sale
4)photo of Porsche trickle charger included with sale
5)several additional photos showing detail of the crazy exclusive department interior options applied to this car
6)an additional video, please have volume on(but not too high as I don't want anyone to hurt themselves.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@JakeMacZ hi thanks for reaching out.
1)while this recall happened well before my ownership, both my PPI with a Porsche dealer as well as my Porsche dealer(Lehigh Valley Porsche), which handles maintenance on all my modern cars, has confirmed all recall or other maintenance items are current as of my last service 4/13/21.
2)While I am aware of this potential weak spot with these cars, I chose not to modify the factory set up. This car has never been used in anger and I valued the originality more than I feared the risk of having a mishap. This car is as the factory built it with the exception of an exhaust system which is bolt on and accompanied by all original parts.

  • JakeMacZ 3 years, 8 monthsago

    A couple of quick questions.
1.). Did this car receive new center Wheel Lock components in Porsche's 2011 recall of all center lock equipped Porsches?
2.). Since this is the last iteration of the Mezger GT1 engine, have the coolant pipes been welded in place?

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

also wanted to mention, for those who may be looking into the future with a car like this, I do have the tires originally supplied with the car by Porsche. If the buyer were to want them, as I did, I would be happy to include with the sale.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@GlennG while you are clearly an authority on these matters and my experience is strictly limited to the cars I looked into during my own search(and at the risk of sounding like Elon Musk pumping Tesla FSD), quite a few of the cars I considered did show overrevs in the less critical ranges. Could also be because the cars that tend to be available are ones that have gotten beaten up and may not be a representative sample of GT3s in general.

  • TubeGuy (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Love to see the interest in this car.

Adrian Streather wrote a great reference book: Porsche 997 2004-2012 The Essential Companion. If you can't buy one you can still read it on Google Books with some effort.

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@slooow50 Range 1 on a GT3 is 9k RPMs which is 500 above redline. You won't register anything just by bouncing off the rev limiter. You have to miss a downshift and mechanically overrev the engine to register ignitions in any ranges on a GT3. It's actually uncommon to see GT3s WITH overrevs.

  • slooow50 (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Am I the only one shocked by the zeros across all rev ranges in the DME? A GT3 that had never hit the limiter? It is barely broken in! GLWTA!

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@MezgerTT You're absolutely correct. I phrased my response poorly. When I said last "Turbo" Mezger, I was referring to the Turbo model, not the engine with a Turbo.

  • MezgerTT (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@KvN no worries, it’s all about the love of these wonderful moving artworks. All good.

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@KvN While your 2012 TTM (997.2 Turbo) did receive the new cheaper DFI motor with Turbos bolted on to it, in its infinite wisdom, Porsche knew it could not get away with such cost cutting measures on a GT car so they stuck with the Mezger through the end of the 997.2 production run. 997.1 was the last of the TURBO Mezgers, but not of the naturally aspirated engines in the GT3.

  • GT3nME (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@GlennG You nailed it. I was surprised to see the “direct fuel injected” verbiage in the listing but disregarded as I figured it was a PCMkt addition to the write-up. Suspect this is what @KvN is on about.

GLWS, Porschitis. Your efforts to relay every possible detail will surely payoff. This is one the best and cleanest specs out there. All the best!

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@KvN Luckily for us you are completely wrong. The DFI engine of which you speak (9A1) was only in the Carrera. It did replace the port injected 3.6 liter found in the 997.1 Carreras. However, this had nothing to do with the GT3 Mezger engines.
The 3.8 liter motor found in this 997.2 GT3 is in fact a Mezger (not Metzger) engine. This, and the 4.0 from the GT3 RS 4.0 which was also a 997.2, were the last of the Mezger powered cars. They never received DFI and remained port injected through the end. The Mezger engine is one of the main reasons these 997.2 GT3s are so sought after today.

  • KvN (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Porschitis forgive me but I'd rather not go around in circles and possibly, who knows?, misinform the potential buyer pool: a DFI 3.8L is not a Metzger and thus, neither is yours.

I have a 997.2 2012 TTM and know all there is about the 997 variants.

    GLWS of this lovely GT3.

These are my views only. Thanks for reading.

@KvN I will humbly let the experts on here respond on your comment regarding the end of the Metzger lineage..

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Wolfgangvonair just an update on some additional information being added to the listing in response to feed back from comments.

just took the car to Lehigh Valley Porsche they have been able to verify the following.

    1. fresh DME report showing 0 over revs s in all ranges-100% clean. docs provided.

2.performed paint inspection and took meter readings on overall car. readings consistent at 3.5-4 mills throughout. paint all original in there opinion. photos and docs provided

    3. to address the earlier call out about the odometer readings from carfax, Porsche inspected the car and verified that the odometer(able to verify electronically and physically) has not been tampered with and provided service records showing the correct and sequential mileage. Docs provided.

    4. because I know the details matter, new mileage after trip back and forth to dealer is 10923. Photo provided.

  • KvN (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Porschitis I don't believe you bought a *Metzger engined GT3* if that was what you were insinuating in your post in regards looking for THE CAR.

Others kindly set us all straight if this is incorrect.

It is my belief that the larger 3.8L direct duel injected ("DFI") flat-six engine that came as a 997 update (and to be known as 997.2), replaced the earlier 997.1's three point six litre Metzger engine.

And so ending the Metzger lineage at 997.1.

@GT3nME If the factory FAL fails you just leave it in the down position and don't use it. It does not need to be removed.
Not sure how DEM would detract from the driving experience. It's not like traction control that kicks in and overrides your own input. If anything, stiffening up the connection between the engine and chassis wold improve the driving experience.
As others have said, these are nice features but not something that should be a determining factor in the purchase of a car like this. However, in my humble opinion, they are definitely not options to avoid.

  • GT3nME (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@TMR3 — I initially wanted FAL and DEM as well. However, some research changed my mind. While others (read: experts) are free to chime in and correct me, this is what I understand:

FAL — The 997 OEM systems fail. My understanding is that it’s an when, not an if. And when they do fail, replacement parts aren’t available (although there is a solenoid fix, I believe). Thus, you are faced with replacing the entire system ($15k-ish), installing the an aftermarket kit (believe the TechAry kit is $7k-ish) or removing it all together (not free). It is worth noting that an aftermarket kit can be installed regardless of whether you have the FAL option. Long story short: By the time I found the 7.2GT3 I ultimately purchased, I was actively searching for cars without FAL. The front lips are as cheap and easily replaced as others have said.

DEM — Some (but not all) 7.2 GT3s came pre-wired with the DEM plugs in the engine bay. My car did. So, if I wanted to add them later, I can with minimal effort. That being said, we cherish the 997-gen for its lack of computer automation and assistance. While a neat bit of engineering, one could argue that it detracts from the overall “experience”. I would.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@GlennG thanks so much for the confirmation, that was my seat of the pants conclusion when I bought it. When opportunity knocks as they say…..

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Porschitis you are correct in that there was not another one built like this. It is one of one as far as all the leather options.
There were only three 997.2 GT3s produced with the leather seat inlays. From those 3, this is the only one that also has the leather a pillar package (EAK), or that had the the leather roof liner (XMA), or that had PCCBs (450). It is unique in any of those combinations, and certainly unique with all 4 options together.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@GlennG for what it is worth, from an admittedly biased source, DEM and FAL were on my list as well. But after a 2 year hunt for the “right” one, I jumped on this one because I had never seen one anything like how this one was optioned. I still haven’t. For me, DEM and FAL were preferences, but not truly rare. It was the notion of a Metzger engined “touring” that got my attention. I certainly can’t be sure, but my feeling from looking at hundreds of them over the years is there isn’t another one.

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@TMR3 FAL and DEM are great options to have but I would never let the lack of them keep me from buying what is an otherwise perfect car. Missing the FAL just means you will be scraping and replacing the front spoiler more often. It's a $300 part that takes 5 minutes to replace. Not a huge deal unless the entry to your own home/garage actually scrapes the front. Missing the DEM is not something you will even notice unless you are driving back to back with a car that does have it. The DEM do a nice job of reducing some of the engine vibrations you feel throughout the car while cruising while still giving a more connected feel when pushing it, but again, you really won't know the difference unless you have a direct comparison between cars with and without it.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@TMR3 nice group of siblings for this one. Non smoker and no paint work. As per the advise of some folks on here I am working on getting paint meter readings up before end of auction. Stay tuned.

  • TMR3 (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Trying to decide how important dynamic engine mounts and FAL are to me. This car is beautiful. I have a 996 GT3, 991 GT3 and a 992 GT3 coming in October. Guess what I'm missing.

Has the car every had any paint work? Non smoker I assume?

@Porschitis mileage discrep? You’re the current owner that has resided in Pennsylvania correct? Instead of guessing like others, I’ll ask a second time as the reason?

  • SpeedJunky (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

    @Porschitis thank you. Will do.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@SpeedJunky DM me to discuss seeing the car.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@SpeedJunky the Shark Works system eliminates the back boxes. Headers are stock, cats are retained, but straight pipes rearward.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@TubeGuy message received and understood. Thanks for the help.

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

@TubeGuy You're spot on with the comment about quality. As the say, "you can't overpay for a good Porsche".

  • SpeedJunky (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Porschitis Is the car available to be seen in person prior to auction end? Regarding the Sharkwerks exhaust, is it a full system? What components were replaced? Does it have side mufflers and cats?

  • TubeGuy (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Agree this car could go for some serious change as there hasn't been a nice super low mileage mint .2 GT3 for sale ANYWHERE let alone on an auction site. With collector-grade GT3 RS commanding upwards of $250k who knows where this could go.

I would also get a paint meter on Amazon pronto. The $45 you spend on it and getting the readings up could pay big dividends. And get a current DME. And maybe a few more shots to show off the additional leather bits. I've never seen a GT3 ordered this way, and it adds to the uniqueness.

When it comes to a GT3 there's no replacing quality.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@GlennG Thanks for the advice and enthusiasm! The spec is crazy,, a Touring before Porsche got around to it. Let me work on the paint meter readings and DME. Try to get them posted shortly.

  • GlennG 3 years, 8 monthsago

I think if you post a clean DME as well as paint meter readings showing all original paint, this car has the potential to set a record sale price for a 997.2 GT3. The spec is one of the best I have seen, and at 10k miles it's one of the lowest mileage 997 GT3s in the country.
The mileage inconsistency is BS. It's from a self-reported title update. Owner probably just ball parked-it. Nobody would go through the effort to roll back a speedo only a few hundred miles.

On the carfax, if you don’t mind please give me a bit more information on what your concern is and will do my best to speak to it.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

I had a DME scan done as part of my PPI when I bought the car. This was done by the local Porsche dealer. All ranges 100% clear. I have not done one during my ownership, but would be happy to arrange one. Car has been part of a collection since purchased, lightly driven and definitely no track time.

  • Sword_of_the_Spirit (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Hi there? Do you have full DME report? Also, understanding that Carfax is pretty much worthless, any idea why the odo is off? Thanks

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

hey all, reach out with any questions, commentary or other Porsche chatter. I'm happy to engage in any or all of it.

  • Porschitis (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Ha! Thanks for the enthusiasm, the car makes it easy.....
