Unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto show as a celebration of Porsche’s heritage, the 911 Sport Classic was created by Porsche Exclusive in a limited run of 250 examples strictly for the European market. The Sport Classic combines unmistakable characteristics of historic Porsche cars from its ducktail rear spoiler, Fuchs-style wheels, double-dome roof panel, and woven leather upholstery. The 3.8-liter engine is supplemented by an “Exclusive Powerkit” for over 400 HP and the chassis is paired with ceramic brakes (PCCB), lowered PASM Sport Suspension, a limited-slip differential, and 6-speed manual transmission. One of the rarest, most collectible, and distinguished 911s ever produced, this Sport Classic is one of only a few to have been imported to the United States and is now being offered for auction out of New York showing under 400 miles on the odometer.

The “Sport Classic Grey” paint color was developed specifically for this limited-edition model and draws inspiration from the nonmetallic 356 color of Dolphin Grey. The bodywork measures 44mm wider in the rear than a standard Carrera S and features a SportDesign front fascia with a unique spoiler lip as well as painted side skirts, a redesigned rear bumper, a double-dome roof panel, and a fixed ducktail rear spoiler inspired by the 1973 Carrera RS. Other details include light grey painted racing stripes along the top of the car, Porsche Exclusive badges on the fenders, lightweight aluminum door skins, and special black painted trim for the headlight surrounds, intake grilles, and mirror bases. It rides on black-painted 19” Sport Classic wheels inspired by the legendary Fuchs design. The seller adds that this example is preserved under full-exterior paint protection film, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Appointed with Espresso Natural Leather upholstery, the cabin has been meticulously crafted by Porsche Exclusive including unique Berber carpeting and woven fabric inserts on the seats and door panels. The Adaptive Sport Seats are accented by grey piping and include embossed model logos on each headrest. The polished stainless-steel door sills feature illuminated Sport Classic logos in blue, and a limitation plaque affixed to the glovebox reads the car’s individual production number. The roof is lined with grey Alcantara, and additional leather upholstery extends from the upper dashboard to the air vents, control panel, trim strips, and center console. The driver is provided with an aluminum-trimmed shifter, a cross-stitched leather steering wheel, and a central tachometer with a unique grey-striped dial.

The naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six features Porsche’s Exclusive Powerkit which includes a redesigned resonance intake manifold for an output of up to 408 HP. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) come standard as well as PASM Sport Suspension with a 20mm lower ride height.

This sale will include a clean Montana title granted under show or display.

@bertsboat Photos 14 and 15 kind of show the double bubble roof. The roof has a depressed section running down the middle. This photo as well shows it: https://classicthrottleshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/2010-Porsche-997-Sport-Classic-Dove-Grey-8.jpg
The gauges are unique to the car, but the speedo is the most obviously so.

With an hour to go, I wanted to thank everyone for their interest in this auction. While I expect a car of this calibre to ultimately fetch a much higher number than the current level, I have decided to remove the reserve to make for a fun last hour. The car will therefore sell today. Good luck.

@Tlo Thank you for making it very clear !

  • Tlo (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@JJensen Two things to add: 1) mileage is restricted to 2,500 miles annually and 2) the EPA compliance work is not cheap (six figures)

  • MackD 1 year, 10 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $500,997

  • Tlo (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@JJensen The car can be licensed to drive on public roads in 49 of 50 states, the exception being California, where CARB certification will be required. Being on the "Show or Display" list allows the car to be imported into the U.S. The work done at JK Technologies allows it to be EPA compliant and therefore registerable/road legal.

  • JJensen (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

So just to be clear “ show or display “ means the car cannot be licensed to drive on public roads ?

It’s ok for some select cars (porsche or not) to be preserved and driven rarely if ever.
This car is likely going to someone or some group that has many rare and special Porsches. They may have some cars they drive the snot out of and others that are kept as museum pieces. For someone that has 1 - 5 Porsches it’s hard to understand that philosophy. So. Let’s celebrate this special and spectacular porsche wherever it lands and whatever its future holds.

  • charliek911 1 year, 10 monthsago

Impressive car, impressive biding, so sad that it will not be driven. I have a 964 Cab, a 2009 Carrera S, and an SC Targa that I enjoy driving the dog stuffing out of....Porsche vehicles are best when driven. Good luck to all.

@List-Renn 1. I too have a 997 Carrera GTS, with duck tail and SC/Speedster spoiler lip. In searching the parts list for a suspension refresh, there's more unique to the Sport Classic than is easily observed. Lots of model-specific parts.
    2. Other special parts - double bubble roof, gauges.
    3. Seat centers and door inserts are actually woven leather. The entire interior is special colored for this model (at the time).
    4. The entire interior is covered in leather. Interior door pulls, dash close-outs, door speaker surrounds, HVAC vents and fins. radio/HVAC controls... Everything. If it's plastic in your car, it's leather covered in the SC.
    5. The carpet and mats evoke old-school square weave.
    6. It's unobtanium to me too and I really love my GTS.

This will be one to watch in the last 10 minutes!

As a GTS owner/enthusiast, I hoped we'd see a SC in the US eventually. Although this one will probably get tucked away and saved for the next owner. For the rest of us, there is the poor man's version!

I guess it depends on how you slice the question, but there are a couple of numbered 997s in shorter supply... the PCA 50th anniversary cars based on a 997.1 Carrera S, and my personal favorite... the 5 Brumos B59 cars based on the 997 GTS.

    GLWA!!

according to the DME, the average speed over the lifetime of the car is 2.5 mph. I've never seen anything like it. Must have spent 130 of it's 150 total running hours just sitting idling.

That ducktail is to die for. I have a ducktail on my early 99 and thinking about putting a ducktail on my turbo. This car is definitely for a collection .

  • List-Renn (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Great pics- most I've ever seen in one place.
    A baker's half dozen remarks:

    1. Ouch! Front bumper was drilled for a Euro plate.
    2. Onerous import rules to contend with, especially if it ends up in Cali.
    3. I want one.
    4. I have one, kinda.... a RWD 6MT LSD PSE Ducktail Sport Chrono GTS Coupe...but no "Fuchs inspired" wheels (mine has centerlines), no cool interior/exterior trim and no PCCBs. And no CF X51 airbox, neither...just plastic.
    5. The gray color, racing stripes and Espresso leather with hounds tooth (Pepita) cloth seat inserts don't integrate well, to my eyes. But the overall vibe is very, very cool. Very.
    6. Otherwise, it's mechanically the same car as mine ...but will likely hammer a half mil higher than my car's valuation.
    7. With < 400 miles, This one will end up in a collection, rendering the "use on public roads" question moot.
6 Thanks for the pleasure of seeing one in detail. Now I gotta go put another thousand miles on my 997 GTS.

  • marcromano 1 year, 10 monthsago

WOW! I can't get enough of this. It's so subtly beautiful. Like most of you, I have seen many beautiful Porsche's being sold. So many that I loved and wanted to remember, that I had to do screen captures and create a folder that's now overflowing. This one is in the top three of the hundreds I've captured. And like many of you, I'm fortunate to own a 911 and have that experience. It's a boys dream realized. Cheers.
Best of luck to whoever becomes the new owner.

  • Tlo (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@RS777 While the exemption to import the car under Show or Display is granted by NHTSA, qualifying cars still need to meet EPA standards to be eligible to be registered in the U.S. and to drive up to 2,500 miles a year. Best to take a look at JK Technologies' website for a clearer understanding. https://jktechnologies.net/

  • Tlo (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @Bruno911 Yes it is. 600 997 GT3 RS 4.0, 500 997 GT2RS and 356 997 Speedster were built worldwide compared to 250 Sport Classic.

  • RS777 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Can I get a better understanding of the import regulations to meet EPA and DOT standards? If it was exempt under Show and Display and could be driven 2500 mi/yr why would it have to be "converted" to US specs? And what mods were done to the car? Thanks

  • Bruno911 1 year, 10 monthsago

Is this the rarest variant of the 997? I’m not aware of any other 997 with worldwide production numbers of less than 250.

  • pcarracer500 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Dolphin Grey paint? Pretty sure this is Sport Classic Grey, as that was the special color all Sport Classics were painted.

Lovely car - I'll be watching and selling more pencils to raise the $$ it will take to win her.

  • Tlo (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@911reasons I’m not an expert but I don’t believe the exemption applies to Canada and because the model was never sold there, it can’t come in before it reaches its 15th year / 2025. Happy to be corrected if someone knows differently.

  • 911reasons (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Can this car be imported into Canada under the current US "Show and Display" or is it too difficult to register in Canada?

  • MackD 1 year, 10 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $300,997

  • Aktifspeed 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Tlo Thanks for the clarification. I just hope the winning bidder drives it and shares it with other enthusiasts for the full 2,500 miles per year... however unlikely that might be considering the vehicles rarity, especially here in the U.S.

  • Tlo (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Aktifspeed Thanks for the kind comments. Yes, the car was imported under NHTSA's Show or Display exemption. It was converted to U.S. specifications by J.K. Technologies LLC in Baltimore and is compliant with all U.S. DOT and EPA regulations and standards. Per the rules of the exemption, the car can be driven up to 2,500 miles a year and registered in 49 states, the exception being California, where it will need to be CARB certified.

  • Aktifspeed 1 year, 10 monthsago

I'm assuming this was imported under the "Show and Display" law... "The "Show or Display" rule is a statutory amendment to the United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) that allows certain privately imported automobiles to be exempted, if the vehicle in question is deemed to meet a standard of "historical or technological significance". I'm wondering if that clean Montana title will allow it to be registered in any other state so it can be regularly used on public roads. BTW, this 911 is probably my all time favorite "modern" 911 variant! What an absolutely beautiful vehicle! I really hope the winning bidder will be able to use the vehicle as it was meant to... to drive! GLWTA
