The 24 Hours of Daytona introduced the GX Class, exclusive to the 2013 race, following the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.  This 2009 Porsche Cayman S, one of only three Caymans to compete and win at the 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona, was originally modified by BGB Motorsport before being sold to Bullet Racing, which transformed it into a “GX.R” race car that meets GX Class specifications.  It features wide carbon fiber body panels, a Porsche 997 3.8-liter direct fuel injection flat-six engine with an X51 intake, a MoTeC engine control unit, 997 GT3 Cup/RSR suspension links, JRZ three-way adjustable suspension, larger brakes, and more.  Piloted by a skilled team including Darryl O’Young, James Clay, Dan Rogers, Seth Thomas, and Karl Thomson, this vehicle secured second place in its class.  Following this achievement, it was stored in Bullet Racing’s climate-controlled storage facility until the current owner’s acquisition in 2019. This 987 race car is being offered for auction out of Alabama accompanied by its second-place trophy, an extensive vehicle history, and assorted media from the race.

This 987 has been meticulously modified with carbon fiber doors, body panels, fender flares, and a prominent rear wing as part of a comprehensive body kit.  The exterior is adorned with a racing livery specific to the 2013 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, featuring white paint, a distinctive vinyl wrap, and race decals.  The car rides on Forgeline wheels mounted with Pirelli P Zero slick tires, although the seller recommends replacing the tires.  Two additional sets of Forgeline wheels are included in the sale. Minor signs of road rash, including a few scratches, are present, showcasing the car's original patina from its racing history.  The seller intentionally retained these blemishes, recognizing them as integral to the vehicle's pedigree.  A collection of images is provided in the gallery, along with a clean CARFAX report.

The interior has been stripped to create a lightweight, performance-focused cockpit, retaining its original racing equipment in compliance with GRAND-AM Rolex guidelines.  Notable features include a full roll cage, polycarbonate front and rear windows, a carbon fiber OMP Racing seat, a racing harness, a quick-release steering wheel, a Teamtech Motorsports window net, and a fire suppression system.  Additionally, it is equipped with a MoTeC engine control unit and dash, along with the original Porsche system for checking oil levels and retrieving diagnostic codes through the factory Porsche PWIS plug-in port.

Power has been upgraded with a Porsche 997 3.8-liter flat-six engine featuring direct fuel injection, an X51 intake, and a MoTeC engine control unit.  The current engine is a spare that was installed after the race.  Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission, which was replaced with a factory unit and Guard Transmission limited-slip differential following the race.  These replaced components are said to have been used for only a handful of track days since. Additional equipment includes a 997 GT3R Premier fuel cell, 997 GT3 Cup/RSR suspension links, JRZ three-way adjustable suspension, and larger brakes.  The seller has performed several maintenance updates during their ownership, including the replacement of fuel pumps and screens, axles, pads, and rotors, as well as a dyno test conducted by BGB Motorsports in 2023 and regular oil and filter changes.  The seller also notes that the battery has a light drain over time, so it is unhooked when the vehicle is not in use for extended periods. No other outstanding maintenance items are reported.

This historic Cayman is being offered with a bill of sale, the second-place trophy, comprehensive records, and a collection of media from the race.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I purchased this car from Bullet Racing and have owned it since 2019.  The car is ready to go on track and needs nothing.  Multiple photos and memorabilia for this car from the 2013 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona will be included.”

@sweissman yes it can be owned and driven is an HPDE car or raced. I only used it as an HPDE car. My plans were to use as an HPDE and wanted to do a couple of races per year HSR or SVRA and always wanted to race it a Monterey Historics but work got in the way and never did.

It does not need a crew at the track and is no different than a GT4 Clubsport for maintenance. I only took BGB to the track one time to shake the car down and to help with set up if needed. I went to the track alone every other time after that. The engine is a stock 911 engine with a factory X51 intake, aftermarket headers, exhaust and tune. Not much different than a streetcar with engine and transmission.

A passenger seat can be added but you may need to move the battery to the front or build a plate like the GT4 CS has so the passengers’ feet are not resting on the battery. This would be a simple modification for a qualified race shop.

The race shops most knowledgeable in my area on this car are BGB Motorsports, Zotz Racing and Goldcrest Motorsports. It is not a very complicated car, and it is already set up for road courses like Barber, Road Atlanta and Sebring.

@jik156 No traction control and No ABS. This car can be fitted with Bosh Motorsport ABS but it was not allowed in the GX class rules and I wanted to keep the car as it raced for historical value.

I also have a GT4 Clubsport MR and this Cayman GX.R has much more grip with the extra downforce and larger tires.

Please excuse my ignorance, can this car be owned and driven as a HPDE car with an additional seat added? Does someone need a "crew" to drive this 12 times a year on the track, or will this simply work w/o special skills? I live 6 miles from the track, and can literally drive over w/o trailering. Thanks. GLWTA if its not me!

  • jik156 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

    And also the ABS?

  • jik156 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Nice... I was wondering if it has the traction control?

@Jennetic The Carfax is clean from its days as a streetcar. Race cars are not street legal and are not sold with titles. This car had a title at some point but when it becomes a full race car it is no longer titled since it can't be registered and used on the street. I did not buy this car with a title, and I am not selling it with a title. I had the same questions when purchasing my first race car and the cars from Porsche Motorsport are the same, sold with VIN and bill of sale only. There is no lien on this car, and I will provide any releases needed to show that. If someone wanted to borrow money on a race car, they would finance it like a piece of equipment and a UCC lien would be issued. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions by email or a phone call.

  • ALE (registered bidder) 1 monthago

This car is incredible; I've seen it run at Barber - it bests almost everything on the track. Wish I had room in the garage. GLWS!

  • Jennetic (registered bidder) 1 monthago

Can you clarify.. the carfax is clean but you’re selling it with a bill of sale. Can it be titled? Is it titled?

@ScoobyDone I was told they had around $300k in the car when I purchased it but I don't have build receipts.

  • Tripp (seller) 1 monthago

@PORCOR I spoke with Rob at SVRA and was very familiar with my car and the 2013 GX class. He said it would run in Group 10 GT3. I've also contacted HSR and sent all the information on the car and am waiting to hear back.

  • Tripp (seller) 1 monthago

@911Brez that is funny. I didn't ad the carfax, it must have uploaded with the ad. I need to let carfax know that they missed the Rolex 24 hour of Daytona and a lot of service history LOL

  • 911Brez 1 monthago

I always chuckle at race cars with a carfax report….. This thing is really nice.

  • PORCOR (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

    @tripp
I would be interested to find out

  • Tripp (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@bldn10 the dyno showed 370WHP and the car weighs 2650 LBS. I drove it about 6 times at Barber and my best lap time in this car was 1:32.8. I think a pro driver could get down to 1:30. It has a lot of down force and the 315's in the rear help!

  • Tripp (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@PORCOR this car would be perfect to race with SVRA, HSR or IGT. With its pedigree I believe it could be raced at HSR Monterey Historics, Rennsport Reunion and would be great at HSR classic 24 hours of Daytona. I believe it would be classed as Stuttgart Cup Cayman 3.8 with IGT. I can call SVRA and HSR tomorrow to find out what class they would assign the car to.

  • bldn10 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Well, what did the BGB dyno show? I've been to Barber many times since 2019 but don't recall ever seeing this car. Surely you have driven there - lap times?

  • PORCOR (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

I wonder what classes this car could be in now as is? Just came from Sebring SVRA weekend and was bit by the bug!
