Limited to just 75 examples worldwide, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss is an ultra-rare edition of the SLR series paying tribute to the 300 SLR’s dominance in the 1955 Mille Miglia.  Boasting the 722 Edition’s underpinnings, the car showcases distinctive carbon fiber bodywork penned under the direction of Korean designer Yoon II-hun, lacking a roof and windscreen for an unadulterated driving experience.  The handcrafted and supercharged 5.4-liter SLR AMG V8 delivers uncompromising performance, propelling the car from 0 to 60 MPH in approximately three seconds and achieving a top speed of 217 MPH.  This example is finished in the special-order shade of Antimony Grey Crystal over exclusive Black leather upholstery.  Exclusively produced for the 2009 model year, the Stirling Moss is coveted as both a collector's masterpiece and an exhilarating driver's machine.  This rare example is now being offered for auction out of Germany, showing just 971 kilometers (603 miles) on the odometer.

Inspired by the legendary 300 SLR race car, the Stirling Moss edition features a similar open-cockpit, arrow-shaped design, omitting the roof, side windows, and windscreen.  Crafted from lightweight carbon fiber, its striking profile is defined by a long, sculpted silhouette, dual aerodynamic humps behind the seats, and iconic twin side-exit titanium exhaust outlets.  Additional details include redesigned front and rear fascias unique to this edition, an imposing exposed-carbon-fiber rear diffuser, exposed carbon fiber side coves, two large hood vents complemented by a smaller vent in the front passenger side, and a manually operated air brake that can be angled up to 35 degrees for added downforce.  This example was custom-ordered in Antimony Grey Crystal and is complemented by silver-painted brake calipers and 19” lightweight multispoke alloy wheels.  A collection of additional images can be viewed in the gallery.

Focused on motorsport, the minimalist cabin is outfitted with black leather complemented by white stitching.  The extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber trim underscores the machine’s lightweight design.  One-piece bucket seats, analog instrumentation, aluminum pedals, and a leather-and-Alcantara three-spoke steering wheel emphasize function over excess.  Stirling Moss’s engraved signature is set into the aluminum trim just behind the gear knob.

Factory-rated at 641 HP and 605 lb-ft of torque, the supercharged 5.4-liter SLR AMG V8 is shared with the SLR 722 Edition, though the Stirling Moss sheds nearly 441 lbs.  Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission.  The suspension features aluminum double wishbones with coil springs and twin-tube gas-pressurized shock absorbers, complete with a front anti-roll bar and anti-dive/anti-squat geometry.  Compared to the standard SLR, the Stirling Moss benefits from sharper steering response and springs that are 15% stiffer, equipped with aluminum-shelled Koni dampers.  Stopping is facilitated by high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes paired with Mercedes’ Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) brake-by-wire system.

This sale will include the owner’s manuals, sales literature, and a German registration.

The seller would like you to know: “The pinnacle of desirability within the SLR lineage is undoubtedly the Stirling Moss, regarded as the dynasty’s crowning masterpiece.  This barchetta, at once roadster and purebred speedster, dispenses with roof, windscreen, and side windows, retaining only two delicate glass deflectors to shield its occupants from the slipstream.  Its form pays direct homage to the iconic 300 SLR of the 1950s, a car forever etched in racing history. Rarely has a modern Mercedes destined for the road embodied such uncompromising purity.”

Seriously; all that weight saving. And all that V8 power. And all that engineering! …. but MB, you “lost” me at 5 speed automatic. Why oh why oh why?

NB: the word “lost” is in inverted commas ‘coz I can’t afford it.

What a beauty. Well secured Seller.

Current duty is 27.5% plus Show & display costs too. Guessing $100k? There

  • Muvovr (registered bidder) 1 week, 3 daysago

I am not at all shocked how quickly the price moved on this jewel. What I am impressed with is the fact that the car made it to PCar. Generally you would find something like this at the high end auctions held during car week in California. This car's specific characteristics and exclusivity certainly influenced how rapidly its price can rise during bidding.

  • Ronbo (registered bidder) 1 week, 3 daysago

Can anyone confirm the exact amt of duty to be paid on this car

@braienm Yes, we do accept cryptocurrency payments (such as Bitcoin or Ethereum) as an alternative payment method. It’s a modern and convenient option that we’ve adopted for more than a year now, and we’re happy to facilitate either full or partial payments in crypto if that works best for you.

  • braienm 1 week, 4 daysago

Hello, I’m interested in the beauty you have listed. Could you please let me know if you accept cryptocurrency payments (such as Bitcoin or Ethereum) for the car, either fully or partially?

  • the.car.museum (registered bidder) 1 week, 4 daysago

@Endever I don’t believe you can import it to the U.S. without a Show or Display exemption. If this car qualifies, you’ll spend a few hundred thousand to get it legal here. Once approved, you’re limited to 2,500 miles per year—not that you’d ever actually rack those up, lol.

I brought my 1 of 250 2010 Sport Classic in that way. The whole process can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on whether the car is already on the approved list. If it’s not, then you’d have to wait until it turns 25 years old.

There are workarounds—like shipping to Canada, registering it there, then bringing it into the U.S. on Canadian plates, or bringing it in as a show car. Either way, expect to pay the import tariff.

@BCata Given the value of this car, no one would consider drilling holes in the bumper to mount a plate. :))

  • NWIC (seller) 2 weeksago

@BCata The plate is attached with a special double-sided adhesive tape designed not to damage the car’s paint or clear coat. It can be removed very easily.
