Up for auction is this 2006 Porsche Cayman S Launch Edition finished in the classic combination of Basalt Black Metallic over a black leather interior.  Only one Launch Edition Cayman was specially built for each Porsche Dealer to showcase the all new fully loaded version of the Cayman that would soon be available to the market, making this specific example a very unique and a rare part of Porsche history.  With its mid-mounted engine and rigid lightweight chassis, the Cayman is arguably one of the best handling vehicles in the Porsche lineup.  With its 6-speed manual transmission and the addition of a few high-end upgrades, this Cayman S offers uncompromising performance that is sure to impress.  It is now being offered with just 49k miles on the odometer by its seller out of Charleston, SC

The Basalt Black Metallic paint is stated to be in excellent condition an application of clear paint protection film over the front bumper, headlights, hood, mirrors, pillars, and roof.  Please view the detailed images in the photo gallery.  A few tasteful cosmetic upgrades have been implemented within the past 2 years including a factory Porsche center radiator with Rennline mesh grills, all-red taillights, OEM horizontal Boxster side vents and an upgraded rear spoiler (original spoiler and side vents included with the sale).  This Cayman rides on a set of OZ Alleggerita wheels that wear brand new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires installed just this week.

Inside, you will find a clean black leather interior that features desirable heated front sport seats.  Other driver centric features include a Bose high-end surround sound system along with a Bi-Xenon headlamp package.  All electronics and accessories are stated to be in working order.

With a near perfect weight distribution attributed to its mid-mounted 3.4 L flat-six engine, this car seamlessly tackles corners.  Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Cayman S utilizes short ratios in 1st and 2nd gears for better low-speed thrust.  Enhancing the already impressive performance of this Cayman are a few light upgrades including an FVD deep sump oil pan, Mantis underdrive pulley, Swift Springs coilover suspension, Function First shift right solution, Function First shift linkage, FF1 engine and transmission mounts, and a Borla exhaust with Racing Dynamics headers.  With a factory rated 295HP along with these functional upgrades, this Cayman S can reach 60 mph in approximately 4.5 seconds.

At approximately 45k miles, this Cayman S received new brake pads and rotors along with new tensioner pulleys, and drive belt. More recently, a full service was performed including the replacement of all fluids and filters. It is said to be completely up-to-date on all service and in excellent running condition with records dating back to the original owner.

The sale of this stealth Cayman S includes a handful of records dating back to the first owner, an original window sticker, original books, two keys, and a clean Carfax Report.

    Excellent. Thanks.

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@DannyP I’m waiting at Autometrics for the report now and will post the results and the 3 Blackstone oil analysis results once I get them shortly

  • DannyP (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

I'd be really interested in a DME report. Nice car, tasteful mods.

@Hjcarlin72 this car has the larger IMS bearing that came on '06-08 M97 engines, and is only replaceable by completely disassembling the engine. The larger bearing has a much lower failure rate than the earlier M96 engines, which are already low. It would be a mistake to disassemble of problem-free engine just to replace the larger IMS. Driving the car often and spiritedly helps avoid any IMS issue (all years and sizes).

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@Hjcarlin72 As advised by my home shop, Autometrics Motorsports, the bearing has not been changed. They recommend shorter oil service intervals with Motul Xcess and exercising the car regularly. I’ve gotten Blackstone reports for every change

  • Hjcarlin72 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Has the IMS bearing been upgraded?

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

More pictures have been added as requested

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@URS6 I will take some today and have them post to the album

  • URS6 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Could we get some undercarriage pictures please? I’m actually interested in the car as a track car.

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@scuderia I don’t think it is a officially termed a “launch edition” as it’s stated here but instead it’s a launch vehicle that was allocated to dealers by PCNA for them to show off a newly released vehicle but not sell initially - It was available as a more highly optioned spec in silver and then the slightly lower MSRP basalt black cars - indicated by option code 762

  • zachlangan (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Very, very good choice of modifications here - no BS cosmetic upgrades; just quality functional upgrades which help long-term reliability or provide greater driving feedback/precision. I have a deep sump, Borla exhaust, OEM center radiator, and OZ Alleggerita wheels on mine as well, only 6 track days in over 2 years, but was more interested in increasing longevity. Extra oil capacity is always a good thing.

The description is a little misleading when it says this car showcases the "fully loaded version". Some Launch Editions were heavily optioned but that wasn't always the case, as is evidenced by this example. This car doesn't have PCCB or leather dash, or even much more common options like PASM, Sport Chrono, NAV, seat memory, rain sensor, dimming mirrors, Sport steering wheel, etc.

Again, looks to be a very nice 987.1 - GLWA!

  • scuderia (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

First I've heard of the launch edition. Doesn't appear to be loaded with out Sport Chrono though. Nice car with nice A/M upgrades GLWS.

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@bldn10 Refer to my previous comment about track use. Also having spoken with previous owners and based on the DME report from the PPI when I bought the car, I was assured that the car had not seen track time. Modifications have been done to address known concerns, enhance driving experience and Improve daily reliability

  • bldn10 (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Curious complement of mods for a car that was not tracked. Nice '06.

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

I should also mention that the car has numeric shift cables installed as well

And that the full factory exhaust and hardware will be included in the sale

  • Chris 4 years, 2 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $4,000

  • basalt987 (seller) 4 years, 2 monthsago

@SSTwin The car has only ever done 1 DE and that was during my ownership. With the PCA Carolinas Region - green run group. Otherwise this is a daily drivable car with improvements for hot climate and spirited mountain driving

No body work other or damage repair

Mechanically everything is sorted and fully functional

  • SSTwin (registered bidder) 4 years, 2 monthsago

Nice Cayman S with all the goodies. Any history of track, HPDE? Any known body or mechanical repair?
