Up for auction is this completely custom 2005 Ford E450 Chinook 4x4 Overland. Originally sold as an Econoline Super Duty van with an ambulance chassis package, this E450 was modified by the specialists at Quigley Motor Company with a new 4x4 drivetrain.  In 2017 after being retired from ambulance service, the cab and chassis were purchased by the previous owner along with a 2004 Chinook 19’ Class B RV. The two vehicles then underwent hundreds of hours of customization over the course of nearly a year to be combined into the incredible overland-style RV we see today. This E450 features its original 6.0L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine, a fiberglass monocoque rear body section, a full solar roof with Tesla-style batteries, and a completely renovated interior with modern appliances, a queen-size fold-out bed, full kitchen, a private shower, and toilet. This one-of-a-kind E450 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

Outside, this E450 features a silver finish with custom “Overland” graphics in black. Exterior additions include a Dometic 9500 manual awning, a custom-made steel rear bumper with spare tire swing-out, custom aluminum ladder for roof access, aluminum fuel can and off-road rack holder, and custom fabricated Raptor LED taillights. The front bumper, hood, fenders, and headlight assemblies were also sourced from a 2018 Ford model. Supplemental illumination is provided by Rigid Industries LED lighting in the front and rear.  The custom-fitted Mopar aluminum wheels are mounted with 245/75/17 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar tires, and the truck is equipped with a dually rear axle.

Inside, you will find a custom upholstered RV cabin highlighting a full grey suede headliner, durable grey leatherette seating, and rugged rubber flooring providing for easy cleaning and excellent insulation. The seller notes that no expense was spared in outfitting the interior of this E450 for maximum comfort and convenience. Some of the notable features include a fully equipped kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator/freezer combo, dual-range electric stovetop, sink, microwave, and all-new smooth-coated and cleared cabinetry.  Occupants are also provided with an enclosed bathroom with toilet and shower, laminated counters and tabletop, a fold-out queen bed, and a new Mach 8 Plus Cub A/C and heater unit. Entertainment features consist of a Pioneer head unit, a multi-speaker sound system, and an LG television screen. The RV cabin also retains its original freshwater tank and custom-made gray water tank for the sink and shower and features a new Suburban SW6DE water heater and Manchester propane tank. The seller notes that this E450 has no need for a generator thanks to its roof-mounted Starlight Solar Power Systems kit, although it can also connect to shore/land power when available.

Power comes from the original Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine rated at 325 HP and 570 lb-ft of torque stock. This engine is said to have been overhauled to address all the commonly known issues including the installation of the following items:

  • UCF Machine Shop O-Ring Cylinder heads
  • New OEM Ford Rocker Arms
  • New OEM Ford Injectors
  • BulletProof Diesel Complete Oiling system upgrade including Square EGR Cooler
  • New OEM Ford Head Gasket Kit
  • New ARP Head studs
  • BulletProof Diesel Billet Water Pump
  • BulletProof Diesel Upgraded 7.3L Mechanical Fan and Adapter
  • New OEM Garrett Turbo GT3782VA
  • Custom mounted upgraded Ford F450 Intercooler
  • HPS Silicone Hose Couplers
  • PPE Diesel Aluminum Finned Transmission Deep Pan
  • 4” Ceramic Coated side-exit exhaust
  • Full Force Diesel custom tunes with SCT Flash X4

Additionally, this E450 benefits from a Quigley Motor Company 4x4 conversion providing for superior offroad capabilities. As an overland style build, the suspension has also been upgraded with the following:

  • Agile Tuned FOX front and rear shocks
  • Agile Tuned Fox Steering Stabilizer
  • Agile Front Variable Rate front springs
  • Hellwig 1.5” rear sway bar kit
  • SD Truck HD 10-leaves Rear Leaf Spring Pack
  • Air Lift Wireless Rear Air Bag leveling system

Offered with a clean title, this custom E350 4x4 overland RV is just waiting for its next adventure, do not miss out.

I have a Class B with with 770 watts of solar, it powers a inverter heat pump which at low compressor speed draws 440 watts, at full tilt it draws 1050 Watts, battery draw is dependent of inside temp. These older r134 units run full tilt all the time which draws far more current but he has the system in place to make it usable with a different type AC unit. If I didn't have so many cars I would have gone higher, it is what it is. Nice RV though and will make someone a very happy camper. :)

@ezdraft Hello, all of the solar and required equipment is new. The lav is new as well and everything works. The build took a few years as an interesting side project while they completed other more mainstream builds. Engine work was done just over a year ago and it has not been camped in since completion. Thank you all for the compliments and info sharing. Hopefully this rig will get a new owner and some dirt on the tires. Good luck!

@CB911 Hello, the RV is 122" in height. The bumper and tow hitch are rated to 5000 lbs., but the chassis can handle more so it tows very easily. A bumper and hitch with higher rating can be added up to 9000 lbs.

@Adoptagreatpet I'll add some semi-educated commentary on the solar/battery setup for potential buyers. The 400 amp hour battery equates to about 4.8KWH of stored energy, of which about 80% will be usable. e.g. the battery has about 3.8KWH of usable capacity. That means absent any solar production (e.g. at night) you can use 3800 watts for one hour before the battery is depleted (not very much at all). So if the RV air conditioner draws 1000 watts (educated guess), you could run it for 3.8 hours total. If the solar panels are rated for 700watts production, that means in perfect sunny conditions it would take about 6 hours for the batteries to fully charge from the sun. If I was a potential bidder I would confirm with the seller that the batteries can be charged from a grid hookup (versus only via solar).

I think the Ford Lightening has about a 140KWH capacity (28x this battery) and can be easily setup to send power to a home. I mention this because I expect we'll start seeing EV RV's sooner rather than later.

Such a cool vehicle, looks very well done. Best of luck to the buyer and seller.

Love this RV. According to the carfax, there was no service completed from 2015? When were all the engine modifications listed completed? Am i missing something in the pictures or a link? When is the last time this RV was used, does everything described work? Solar, LIthium batteries, inverter?

  • CB911 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

What is the height of the rig? Towing capacity? How does it tow? Any more pics of the cassette toilet location and ease of removal?

  • lennyhd2002 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@RRM26 the way the system works is the same as I stated , the only difference is the type
Of batteries the solar panels are charging . And it may be possible for the batteries to stay charged for 2 days if they are only operating 12v lights and 12v components on the inside . But if the inverter is on and turning the 12 v into 120 to run the TVs and ACs .. the inverter sucks the juice out of them batteries very quickly . That’s why generators are very important , they charge the batteries and produce 120. And the golf cart batteries / lithium batteries only focus on the 12 v components on the inside . But hey I’ve only been selling motorhomes for 15 yrs , what do I know ....

  • ezdraft 3 years, 3 monthsago

@RRM26 do you really need a generator with solar and tesla style batteries? i thought that was the point in designing the vehicle this way was that you dont need a generator? :)

  • RRM26 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Adoptagreatpet Hello, A/C runs off solar. We'll find out if a supplemental generator could be added. Let you know asap.

  • RRM26 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Alc Hello, the front seats are currently the only ones with belts. They can be added to the rear benches if requested. It is a queen size fold-out, so sleeps 2 comfortably. 4 is a bit of a squeeze.

@Jack1954 I will go measure it tomorrow and report back.

  • RRM26 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@DrT The fresh water capacity is 32 gallons, with gray at 18. The cassette removal is behind the spare tire and is waterless so needs to be emptied every 15-17 flushes. Self contained in liners so you don't actually empty, just dispose.

@RRM26 @RRM26: I watched your video again (nice vid BTW) but there is no mention of fresh water capacity. In the past we've been forced to carry multiple 5 gallon jugs for a 3-4 day foray and it is such a PITA. One more thing, where is the access panel to the toilet's cassette? Is it on the exterior, how large is it, and how nasty is emptying it (aaaargh!!)?

  • lennyhd2002 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@ezdraft driving it charges the engine batteries . But the solar supposedly feeds the 6v deep
Cycle batteries ( golf cart batteries)and then the those batteries feed the inverter and the inverter converts the 12v into 120 that runs all the air conditioning, TVs and all outlet plugs . The golf cart batteries are also responsible for The 12v Ceiling lights ,remote thermostat for the air conditioning, rope lighting , water pump , etc ..

  • ezdraft 3 years, 3 monthsago

@lennyhd2002 I might be wrong but doesnt driving the vehicle also charge the lithium batteries? From what i am reading this is very similar to a Coachman Galleria Li3 in how the power is derived.

  • lennyhd2002 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

No generator hurts it for me . The solar to the batteries to the inverter to the outlets always becomes an issue somewhere . I need a genny. Beautiful rv though

  • DestersDad 3 years, 3 monthsago

Any idea of the towing capacity after the conversion?

  • RRM26 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@Craignyc Yes they flip out and become a bed.

  • hudd07 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Would also like a pic of seats folded into a bed. Is it just the one Queen (couch folds out) or does the table seating also make another bed?

  • Craignyc (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Are there pictures of the seats in the sleeping configuration? I assume they flip out to become a bed. Thanks

  • ober9331 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Thanks. Well done. The video does answer all the questions. Makes me wanna get out and enjoy the outdoors. Cool vehicle. Had no idea that I’d actual consider something like this… but I am. Very very cool!

  • RRM26 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@DrT Hello everyone and happy bidding! Please watch the video attached to the listing. It answers all these questions you might have and shows the build start to finish. According to factory the fuel tank should be a 55-gallon tank. It's all solar powered. No camera. Yes it has a furnace. 9200 BTU AC Unit and 9.8 gallon LP Capacity.

  • GLHatWFO (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@abacpm, I did not see the fuel capacity spec either but believe it is 31 gallons.

  • abacpm (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@CurtGT3RS : the cassette toilet irks me too. We've never had one and obviously space in a van is at a premium but it's gross to hand carry & empty out a plastic tank of... . My other concern is fresh water capacity. My wife & I use 20 gallons per day.

  • CurtGT3RS (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Great build, was excited to bid……then…..cassette toilet.

  • lennyhd2002 (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

Is the roof AC’s 13,500 or 15,000 btu and does it have heat pumps ? Does this have a furnace ? What generator and does it run off propane or diesel? Hours on the generator? Rear or side cameras ?
