Up for auction at no-reserve is this street-legal 2004 Porsche 986 Boxster 3.6 L race car finished in Dark Teal Metallic over a customized Savannah Beige interior.  Offering mid-engine agility, this 2004 example has been made race-ready with the installation of safety equipment and performance upgrades including a 6-speed Cayman S manual transmission with limited slip differential, a larger 3.6 L Porsche 996 engine and adjustable Bilstein shock absorbers.  Accompanied by a wide array of additional accessories including a spare set of Porsche wheels, tools and its very own trailer, this Boxster race car is said to be in great running order with approximately 72k miles shown on the odometer (TMU).

The Dark Teal Metallic paint is noted to be in great shape with some typical track-going wear from DE events (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  Exterior modifications include retrofitted Porsche Litronic headlights, 718-style taillights, a D.Moris carbon-Kevlar top, red painted 997 side mirrors, a custom tow hitch and a TUV approved body kit with a Rieger front bumper, Hoffle rear bumper and a black spoiler.  This Boxster rides on lightweight 18” HRE C21 3-piece wheels with 5mm spacers which come dressed in slick racing tires.  An additional set of 18” Porsche wheels with newer Hoosier tires will also be included in the sale.

Inside, the Savannah Beige interior has been modified with Recaro racing seats, Schroth 6-point harnesses, a quick-disconnect Sparco R353 steering wheel, Rennline sill plates and a Numeric Racing shifter.  The factory optioned Bose Sound System is equipped, and the seller has added a fire extinguisher as well as an AIM video camera and Coco floormats.  A Porsche 996-gauge cluster has also been installed which has not been reprogrammed and currently shows an inaccurate reading.  All other gauges and accessories are reported to be fully functional, although the horn is inoperable, and the turn signals will not self-cancel due to the racing steering wheel.

This Boxster’s original engine has been swapped out in favor of a larger 3.6 L flat-six engine sourced from a Porsche 996.  The engine is noted to have had approximately 64k miles during the time of installation with a new IMS bearing and an upgraded IPD Plenum.  Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Cayman S-derived 6-speed manual transmission with a Stage III SPEC clutch and an Elite limited slip differential.  Other performance upgrades include:

  • Fabspeed Maxflow Performance Exhaust
  • Fabspeed Race Headers
  • Third Radiator with Cooling Pipes to Engine
  • GT3 Lower Control Arms
  • Bilstein PSS9 Adjustable Shocks
  • Cayman S Brakes
  • Stainless Steel Brake Lines

The new 3.6 L engine was fully serviced prior to installation with approximately 2k miles driven since that time mostly during DE events.  A recent fluid and filter service was performed in February of 2020 and this Boxster is said to be in good running order, although an intermittent check engine light has been reported as there are no catalytic converters. Additionally, the seller notes that the electronic throttle control should be looked over in the near future.

The sale of the race car will include one key, service records, additional wheels, a Porsche sunscreen, tools, a 2-ton jack with jack stands and a Chris Leone Motorsports SouthSport trailer with a spare tire and wheel hub. Offered at no-reserve, this turn-key Boxster race car makes the perfect choice for any motorsports enthusiast.

Thanks Dick. I'm local (from Knoxville) and would pay for the PPI myself, but unfortunately am not comfortable without having a 3rd party inspection. Good luck with the auction, and would love to see the car in-person if it doesn't work out.

  • Artdeckco (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

I saw the bids on your Boxster and was appalled. I had a 2000 Boxster S that I sold privately for $19,000 2 years ago. I wouldn’t let this go for a penny under $35K.

  • Berosucci (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@dcarter - thanks for all of the information. Unfortunately I won't be bidding due to the inspection needs in my state to keep this registered for the street. That said, this will be a really sweet track car (or otherwise really fun car) for someone, unfortunately, not me. Good luck with the auction.

To your question...the answer is NO...She is a beautiful car packaged with many many high quality extras...but she is still primarily a race car and not perfect...she is what she is.
    Thanks
    Dick

  • nnorthing (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

Hi, has the car had a recent Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) and/or a leak-down test completed? If so, can you share results? Car looks very interesting, appreciate your time.

  • dcarter (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@msandford74 As I stated earlier the gauge cluster works fine...it is the milage that is not correct...check engine light lights infrequently and seems to be a problem because of no cats or communication between the ECU and the throttle body...ECU may need to be re-programed...and there are shops to do just that...based on the value of the car this should be a nominal expense for a great car.

  • msandford74 (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

So to be clear, the car runs correctly with no drive ability issues even though the gauge cluster needs to be reprogrammed ?
When the check engine light Comes on, is this when the throttle doesn’t respond to inputs correctly? Or does it not run correctly all the time?
    Thank you for your time

  • dcarter (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@msandford74 Hi, Gauge cluster must be removed and sent to a shop to reprogram...I did not do...it's a basic track car and occasional daily driver if you wish...it is not perfect in every way...Cost ?
    Thanks
    Dick

  • dcarter (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@msandford74 Hi. Have had some problems with the ECU communication with the throttle body...my tech clears check engine light...has no cats...this may be the problem...gauge cluster works just fine...mileage is not correct if you can live with it...about 10k light.

  • msandford74 (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

    Hi
What is the electronic throttle control unit doing to need servicing?
Also in the write up it states that the gauge cluster needs to be reprogrammed please explain what needs to be done. Do you have a cost estimate?

  • dcarter (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@Berosucci Hi, The engine was installed about 14 months ago by DC Auto and a new IMS bearing installed at the time...yes, since it has a removable sport wheel, a dash light appears and turn signals must be manually canceled.
    Thanks
    Dick

  • dcarter (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@mec011 Hi, Yes the soft top is still installed and in good working condition.
    Thanks
    Dick

  • mec011 3 years, 10 monthsago

@dcarter Might have missed it, but is the soft top still installed/working? Is it in good shape? GLWS!

  • Berosucci (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

When was the engine swap and was that when the IMS was changed out (assuming it was a rebuilt engine)? Or, was the IMS replaced at a later date? Are there any fault codes for the drivers side airbag present?

    Any info is helpful.

  • msandford74 (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

    Hi,
What will it take to “reprogram” the gauge cluster and is there a reason you haven’t had it done? Do you have a cost estimate for the programming ?

  • dcarter (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@Bcs82000 Hi, the car is not exclusively a track car...although the exhaust is a bit loud...I used it as a daily driver for several years...as you can see by the photos...it still has all the comforts of a daily driver...it has not been gutted like a full track car.
    Thanks
    Dick

  • Bcs82000 (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

Maybe a terrible question....I know this is a track car, but how 'daily driver-ish' might you say this car is? (I wouldn't actually daily it, but maybe I'd use it for a day or two here and there as a daily)

Sorry if I missed this anywhere, but seems to have started life as a base Boxster, but looks to have the red calipers like an S model. Have the brakes been upgraded, and if so what was done? Thanks and GLWTA!

@msandford74 Thanks for taking the time to comment...I'll respond as best I can to your questions.
Yes, I have a 14 page CARFAX dated 10-23-19 which stated incorrectly that the car has had 3 owners, the original leaseholder from 2005, I purchased the car in August 2006 and it says the 3rd owner was in October 2009 when I registered the car in Tennessee. The car has NOT been involved in an accident. The original 2.7L engine was sold to DC auto when they supplied the 3.6L engine. Yes, I have a receipt folder that is 1.5" thick.
I hope this answers your questions...please write if you have more.
    Thanks

Do you have a Carfax available that you can post?
Has the car ever been in a accident?
What happened to the original engine?
Do you have receipts for the mechanical work done that you can post?
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi Guys,
I really appreciate your looking at my Boxster...She is more beautiful than the photos show. I'm the second owner, after purchasing her in August 2006 I joined PCA and began participating in DE events in February 2008. I continued to become a PCA Driving Instructor participating in events at such tracks as Roebling Road Raceway...Atlanta Motorsports Park...Barber and Road Atlanta. You may notice many up-grades...I built the car as an Homage' to what I thought Porsche might have done if they had continued the 986 for an additional year. I recently purchased a 991 Carrera S and am today celebrating my 75th birthday and have decided to forgo driving in DEs but will continue to instruct. I hope whom ever wins her will enjoy her as much as I.
    Good Luck.
