Commonly regarded among the greatest Porsches of all time, the 996 GT3 was the first of its kind and the most powerful naturally aspirated 911 ever at its debut, designed to meet FIA homologation requirements for racing. This 2004 example features Cup-style modifications as well as a FabSpeed exhaust system, carbon fiber roof, full roll cage, new Bilstein RS suspension, Recaro race seats, and much more. This GT3 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York showing approximately 27k miles on the odometer.

This GT3 was factory finished in Midnight Blue Metallic and the seller states it has since been repainted. Modifications include an RS-style front bumper, a 911 Turbo/C4S rear bumper, wider rear fenders, and Cup-style accessories including a carbon fiber roof panel and rear spoiler. A set of Carrera III wheels have been mounted with Bridgestone Potenza tires. The seller notes this GT3 has attended Porsche Club of America Driver Education and autocross events, and that minor signs of road wear are present. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black leather interior is appointed with Recaro bucket seats and red safety harnesses. An aftermarket shifter and full roll cage have also been installed along with the deletion of rear components to achieve weight savings. Optional factory equipment includes aluminum instrument dials, a thicker steering wheel, and air conditioning with full climate control.

This GT3 derives up to 380 HP and 284 lb.-ft of torque from a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six Mezger engine. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. Compared to the original 996 GT3, the updated version utilizes the bodyshell of the Carrera 4 and features upgraded 6-piston front brakes. The seller states this example has been race-tuned and has received a new oil cooler and Bilstein RS suspension. Detailed records are provided in the gallery, and the CARFAX report shows 18 service records since 2004.

This sale will include a clean title.

@Flsupraguy no, I haven't seen it on track. I just drove it on the street. I own a street 996 GT3 and a 996 GT3 Cup, however, and this one seems mechanically solid to me (although I am not a mechanic).

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Flsupraguy The engine is strong. No issues there. The car is not perfect and that is why its not a 6 figure car.

  • Flsupraguy (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@MJCGT3 have you seen this run on track? With my luck the engine would kaboom the first track day..

  • MJCGT3 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

I've decided not to bid since I have a deal on another car at the moment, so I'll share some objective thoughts on this car. I saw and drove the car and can verify that it goes like stink and is loads of fun. It makes all the right noises and would be the ultimate track rat that you can drive to the track, flog it for the day, drive it home, and you wouldn't care about adding more track rash in the process. IMHO it's not worth the expense of turning back into a true stock-like street car, but if you're looking for a street legal track weapon this could be ideal. She's cosmetically challenged inside and out, but seems mechanically solid and ready to play. Good luck to the seller and bidders.

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Flsupraguy great catch on the parts mix match. Is the rear end (suspension, axle, brakes, etc) 996 GT3 or a bunch of thrown together parts? Either way this car is going to be a heck of a project to restore or convert back to track.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Flsupraguy we believe the forward interior parts are stock and not part of other cars. The car was a Canadian delivery Euro car.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Flsupraguy yes the rear interior parts have been removed. The car is currently set up as a DE day car.

  • Flsupraguy (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Please correct me if I'm wrong but it appears it was previously gutted and used as a track car? The upper center console is from a pre-02 car (old style cupholders and ac horseshoe), and the driver’s side door panel is from a boxster?

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Flsupraguy There is no major leak. The shop floor under the car is clean after weeks of it being parked. The AC does not work but heat does. When you turn on the AC the compressor kicks on but it does not get as cold as it should. I imagine it needs a recharge.

  • kalis99 1 year, 10 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $25,996

  • Flsupraguy (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Appears to be a small oil leak from the pics, has it been fixed? Also, does the AC and heat still not work? If so, do you know what needs to be corrected to make it operational?

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc yes the cage is welded in and thank you for correcting me about wide body facts.

I was under the impression that all turbo/GT cars were wide bodied.

    Thanks

  • zachlangan (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

The Rennlist FS ad is from 2016 and lists it as a "GT3 Cup Replica" and in the photos it does have a full roll cage. The car had the C4S rear bumper in that listing. It also lists carbon fiber doors, roof, hood, and engine cover. It also sports the Cup car side mirrors. The car was in Ontario. Mileage at that time is listed as 42,000 kilometers, which converts to just over 26,000 miles. At some point the car was converted to street legal which would necessitate removal of the full roll cage to the current roll bar and the body parts (side mirrors, hood, doors) seem to have been converted back to original as well. Everything seems to check out from my perspective. I'd probably continue the conversion back to stock if I purchased it... original rear bumper and wheels at least.

  • garrege 1 year, 10 monthsago

Are we sure this is a GT3??
It's listed on Rennlist for $68,000 CAN with 42,000 km which seems like the same mileage here.
If a car gets converted to a race car does it become a GT3? ; )

  • Blubusdrvr (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Man, this thing has me scratching my head. Why exactly does it have a kill switch? Just to clarify - it's a roll bar not a roll cage.

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@HK_Motorcars were you able to verify if the rollcage was welded in?

  • shutupanddrive (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc that’s what I thought the GT3 is narrow body. It looks like someone bought a full blown race car, had it serviced, and put on street/track suspension. That much is evident from the link and the receipts. It’s looks like an awesome 996 GT3 hot rod?

  • MJCGT3 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

996 GT3s are narrow body cars. This one has clearly been modified with wide rear fenders from a Carrera 4S, and it looks like the front fenders may have been modified to also be wider than stock.

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@HK_Motorcars I thought the 996 GT3 was a narrow body. If you go into that web page link below it sounds like this car went through EXTENSIVE modifications to include widebody rear fender flares. It was also listed as having carbon fiber doors which obviously it no longer has.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @HK_Motorcars *4S rear bumper

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @shutupanddrive No chip no tune.

As far as the 4S front bumper goes, people have interesting tastes! The bumper install shouldn’t/didn’t require any modifications however, as both the 996 4S and GT3 are wide body cars.

There is no front lip, stock front bumper.

    Thanks!

  • shutupanddrive (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Does not qualify as a rebuild at all. So how is the car “tuned”? Does it have a chip? Why was the rear fender of a c4 installed? Is it wider than stock to get wider tires? Why the front spoiler? Thx.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc Not at the facility today so let me double confirm tomorrow but I am almost positive that it’s welded in off my memory and also after reviewing the photos.

    Will check back tomorrow thanks

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@HK_Motorcars thanks for the quick response, is the roll cage bolted or welded in?

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc You are correct no engine related bolt ons other than the aluminum flywheel unless that is a stock component.

The MC racing invoice is what i would consider a rebuild but everyone’s opinion of what a rebuild involves differs. I guess some or even most consider a rebuild to be engine out/pistons out/ valve cover off etc. correct me if wrong.

But yes, what was done by MC is the “rebuild” which shows only stock components other than the bilsteins.

    Thanks!

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc likely a mixup of KM and MI,
    Happens often on Canadian cars.

    This would be my assumption,
    Thanks!

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@HK_Motorcars this wasn’t a rebuild correct? From the invoice it just looks like routine maintenance. Did I miss something, appears the engine is original at original spec. Mx racing just did heavy routine maintenance. Anyone have any other insight? I didn’t see anything in the website about the car’s life about engine displacement or mods outside of bolt-ons.

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

…another confusing question, why does the mileage in 08/2018 say 28,100 then in 2020 it goes back to 26,000? Any insight? Tried to get verification on MC racing invoice but I did not see a mileage associated with the service.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@shutupanddrive The car bogs down when at idle and AC is turned on. This indicated to us that the compressor and system are in tact. Will report back on temp.

    Thanks!

  • notauto1 1 year, 10 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $20,000

  • shutupanddrive (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Can you tell us if the ac has been deleted or needs charge? Has the compressor been removed?

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc that is a shadow. Noting is separated.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@Alc the radio is functional. Due to the power kill switch you do need to enter the code every time you want to use it. The underbody photos are honest with damage to the plastic. I do not see any damage to the tub or other components. . As I said before there are no oil stains on the floor under the car where it has been parked for a while now. I don't believe it has an excessive leak. We sell cars as honestly as we can with the info provided by the consignment customer. We do not believe in cleaning under carriage and hide leaks as we see others doing. If you want to face time about the car let me know and we can do a full tour.

  • Alc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

On pic 177 on the left of the lifting point is that a shadow, a broken piece of metal, plastic separation? Obviously this GT3 has been “used” extensively but is there any undercarriage damage other than the plastic underbody panels? Agree with the previous statement, something is leaking or was leaking extensively and any insight to what it was would be hugely appreciated. Lastly, is the radio working…just trying to ascertain the extent of interior removal that was accomplished in the conversion.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@MJCGT3 The driver seat is bolted in position. The passenger seat is on a slider.
The AC It is not functional. We have not looked into the issue.
    No spares with the car
It is currently registered in CT with no check engine lights.
Yes airbag light is on until you hit “ok”
the car has been sitting for a week and there are no drips on the floor. If its leaking its very small.

  • MJCGT3 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Are the seats on sliders or bolted to the floor?
Does the car have air conditioning and if so, does it work?
Are any extra parts included in the sale?
In picture 199 the Carfax report shows that the car failed emissions 10/21/21. What did it fail for and has the issue been remedied? Is there a check engine light on?
Is the airbag light on for the lack of airbags?
Pictures 187, 188, and 194 appear to show an oil leak. Do you know what the cause is?

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@redgard The engine specific work is as follows:

    Clutch/aluminum flywheel
    Coil packs
    Spark plugs
    Oil and filter change
    Lifters
    Chain tensioner
    IMS bearing housing

The only suspension work that was done was the installation of bilstiens, ride height, and an alignment.

The videos purpose was to demonstrate that this is a wonderfully running and driving car, that’s all.

    Thanks for your participation

  • redgard (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

-Was the reciept shown in photo #195 for a rebuild? It looks like its mostly for suspension work..
    - Also I'm not really sure what demographic you were appealing to when you put the driving video together. But it missed the mark as far as I'm concerned ( 50 year old, long term Porsche owner. Who owns both street and track Porsches) Maybe it would be ok if this was a no reserve auction and you just wanted to get rid of the car...

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @shutupanddrive correct!

  • shutupanddrive (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@HK_Motorcars I think you meant fortunately!! Thx.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@shutupanddrive under the current owner the car saw more road use than track. Its been used for some DE days and autocross since it came to the USA. Unfortunately the current owner has other projects and cars he tracks more often that are full race cars.

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

The body rear end is from a C4S, the rest is all GT3 2004, engine, transmission, suspension is GT3 and aftermarket parts.

    Thanks!

  • HK_Motorcars (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

For anyone curious about the engine rebuild and the details of that work, please see photo 195, which is the invoice for the rebuild done by MC Racing.

    Thanks!

  • shutupanddrive (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

How many of these miles are track miles?

  • Madwho (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@brontosaurus ha! The form states mileage but I could see how a Canadian car would have km listed. My mistake!

  • brontosaurus (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @Madwho km.

  • Madwho (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@brontosaurus the car in the post has 40k+ miles, is it a similar car or the actual car?

  • redgard (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

So was this GT3 modified to a 4.0 ltr?

  • rebrewer (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @Mike32 This started life as a GT3 rather than a C4S.

  • brontosaurus (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@brontosaurus More history on this car here:

    https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-marketplace-old/955327-gt3-cup-replica.html

  • brontosaurus (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@drbruno The rear quarters have clearly been replaced with C4S panels.

  • Mike32 1 year, 10 monthsago

Really curious to know the story behind this car. C4S body shell, 996RS front bumper sans lip, 997 C2 wheels. I'm assuming someone swapped a GT3 engine into a C4S.

  • URS6 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Interesting. Would be good to know more of the story behind this car. Repaint with different front and rear bumpers, wheels and engine. All a result of a track incident? Might make a great track car if we knew more. Who did the engine rebuild? Thanks.

  • drbruno (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

How was a wide body bumper fit to a narrow body GT3?

  • Flsupraguy (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Who built the engine? Any receipts? Any dyno numbers?
