We are pleased to offer this 2004 Porsche 996 Carrera 40th Anniversary Edition. Celebrating 40 years of the Porsche 911, a limited run of 1,963 specially appointed Carreras were introduced in 2003 for the 2004 model year. These 996’s were all finished in traditional GT Silver Metallic paint over Natural Leather interiors and came equipped with the front fascia of the 911 Turbo, a limited-slip differential, Sport Suspension, the X51 Power Kit, special polished wheels, and other unique features. This particular example has been upgraded with an IPD intake plenum, LN Engineering IMS bearing, and has been recently serviced along with a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection. Currently showing just over 33k miles on the odometer, this rare and highly collectible 996 is being offered for auction by its seller out of California accompanied by a matching luggage set and the original window sticker.
This limited-edition Carrera comes finished in GT Silver Metallic and sports the front fascia of the Turbo model along with GT3-style flared rocker panels, polished exhaust tips, and a special "40 Jahre 911" designation on the rear decklid. The seller notes some very minor chips on the front bumper and states that the front spoiler was recently replaced in preparation for sale. The left side fender, door, and rear quarter panel are also said to have been previously refinished to address minor cosmetic damage, additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The model-specific 18” Carrera II lightweight polished wheels come dressed in a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires dated from 2018.
Inside, this 996 highlights a premium Natural Grey Leather interior complemented by unique details including aluminum instrument bezels, a painted center console, Alcantara headliner, door sills with “911” insignias, and a limitation plaque below the climate control panel engraved with the car’s production number of 1098. Additional factory options include a rear window wiper, the Bose High-End Sound Package, a remote 6-disc CD changer, and heated power-operated Comfort Seats. An upgraded double-din Porsche Classic radio has been installed and the original radio is said to accompany the sale as well. The seller notes minor wear on the driver’s seat bolster and reports all accessories and instrumentation to remain fully functional.
The 996 40th Anniversary Edition is equipped with the Exclusive X51 Power Kit which brings the output of the 3.6L flat-six engine up to 345 HP, an increase of 25 HP over the standard 996 Carrera. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission which provides a 0-60 time of approximately 4.5 seconds. The X51 Power Kit includes a valvetrain upgrade, cast-aluminum intake manifolds with a modified cross-section, and a remapped engine tune. This special edition also comes standard with Turbo radiators, a limited-slip differential, and Sport Suspension. An upgraded IPD intake plenum has been installed and the seller reports an LN Engineering IMS bearing upgrade to have been carried out as well. An oil change and brake fluid flush were completed earlier in 2021 and a recent service was performed within the last month including new spark plugs and ignition coils. Some invoices are provided for reference in the photo gallery along with a recent pre-purchase inspection.
This sale will include a matching luggage set, the original owner's manuals and window sticker, a set of two keys, a leather key pouch, a spare tire, service records, and a clean title. One of the most sought-after models of the 996 generation, this highly collectible 996 40th Anniversary Edition is not to be overlooked.

My 40th AE came with the GT Silver painted hard back Sport Seats as part of the 40th AE package. They are so perfect for this car for the total concept and I love them ! The comfort seats were an extra $1400.00+ option and many were spec’d with them.
Having owned 30+ 911’s over the last 40 years I must say this is one of my favorites! It’s a treat to drive as intended and reminds me a lot of my ‘93 RS America. Anyone who loves the true pure Porsche driving experience loves loves loves these cars! Someone is going to be very happy today! GLWTA!

@Hotwheels will do but don't hold your breath just yet! I'm at 89k miles and can't stop driving it. In a month it will be my 1st year with it and I'll probably rack up a bit over 12k miles in that time. The only option we didn't get here were the GT3 bucket seats.
This is a fine example for sale here and with 33k miles, I hope the new owner drives it and drives it a lot! These cars can do road trips, track duty and take your lady to dinner duty ;) Best of luck to seller and bidders!
Great to see healthy bidding on this 911. The whole tide of 996s rises and falls on the outcome of the C4S and Anniversary Edition prices. The Millenium Edition is in there too but doesn’t get the same respect.
Do keep in mind that this one has the factory luggage, leather key pouch, books including the "911 Anniversary Edition" sales book and window sticker.

@Hotwheels , the color matched sport seats were available in NA. I know this because my car has them. They are very rare and I haven't seen another car with them in quite some time. They are heated and have electric tilt adjustment with a manual slider.

@cp0002 regarding bore score go talk to Jake Raby. He is an engine builder. I also run 0w40 on my car. Yes I know about oil temp. Did you ever formulated motors oils, I did, I had access to engine test labs, nascar with Hendricks and roush (yes Jeff Gordon and mark martin), indy with unser, scca, top fuel etc. There are certain things I can’t talk about because I signed an NDA. Anyway my BMW 3.5
Straight sixes would get to 500,000 miles Original engines and last time I saw it my 300sd mb turbo diesel was at 1.050 million miles on original engine, believe I know how to make cars last. Not a year every 6 months oil changes. Anyway I run
33 percent af coolant on my car, my radiators were chemically cleaned and even after hard driving my water temp needle is between the 1 and 8. By the way I dealt with Porsche directly getting A40 approvals for a lot of different oil formulas all over the world. I didn’t research any of this I actually did it.

@luis.seneriz What is far more important than water temperature is OIL temperature. From a cold start, when the water temp gauge hits 180, your oil is still well below that and needs more time to warm up. If you "gun" it, as you say, before your oil temp is up to operating temperature, you will introduce premature wear on your engine components, especially if you make a habit of doing that on a regular basis.
In addition, you do NOT want to just "start it and go", especially in colder climates. The proper method for starting and warm up is to start the car, wait about 30 seconds and then start driving (gently) and make sure the revs stay under 3K until the OIL is up to operating temperature. Rule of thumb is 15-20 minutes. Furthermore, the frequency of oil changes is more important for the IMS bearing as long as there is no bore scoring. The rule here is once per year or 5K, whichever comes first. Oil that is changed les frequently than that can become acidic and pit the bearing. However, once you have bore scoring, more frequent oil changes will help slow the severity of the scoring.
If you do a little more homework, you will find that the idea that different displacement engines score worse than others is a myth. It all has to do with how the engine has been treated. While running them too hard before they are warmed up will cause scoring, letting them idle too long will cause damage as well due to the engine running rich on start-up and the excess fuel washing away the coating of oil on the cylinder walls. And the proper way to inspect for scoring is NOT from the top (pulling the plugs) but from the bottom. Scoring starts at the bottom of the cylinders and works its way up as it gets worse. If you can see scoring at the top, that means that the scoring has significantly progressed. If there is any scoring at all, that means that the motor will have a significantly shorter lifespan than it should and a proper rebuild will cost you in the neighborhood of $25K. However, if these motors are treated properly and the IMS is serviced regularly (unless you have the permanent solution), they will last a very, very long time. There is a 40AE owner that posts regularly on RL that has over 450K on his car.

@hitecauto Lively car that should attract good bidding. Not sure I agree with the “poor man’s GT3” label. A lot of the AE40 owners can afford a GT3 but chose the AE40 because it affords a better road driving experience than a GT3 yet more powerful and better handling than the other naturally aspirated 996s. I think the AE40 stands on its own category unlike any other 996 model.

@justneedsatune I could not agree more. A friend of mine and myself just did a tack day at Sears Point ( Sonoma Raceway) He has had several Porsches and his current is a 40th. Of all of his previous Porsches he is keeping the 40th and can't say enough great things about it. On the track it is seamless and then driving it home it is all Porsche. Yes, the 40th Anniversary is finally being re-discovered!
I bought pretty much exact same car in 2009. I still have it. I like it so much that I wouldn't mind buying another one to rewind the miles with and then sell the one I've got. So I placed a bid! These are the "GT3 Light" experience without the GT price tag. These cars are simply the best sports car for the money available today, period.

@cp0002 you are ? percent correct. You need to warm these cars properly before gunning them. Until water temp don’t get to 180 you shift around 3,500 rpms. Also frequent oil changes. 6 months 5,000 miles whatever happens first. I almost bought a car at Porsche dealership convertible 2003, 46k miles, i met the new owner 6 months latter at cars and coffee, yes bore scoring. Also another local guy with a 40th anniversary yes 42k miles bore scoring. As soon as you start these cars you need to go and drive, idling is not good for these cars. One final comment on M96/M97 engines, 3.4 score less, then 3.6, the 3.8 s are the worst. People that stored their cars for the bad weather, go to their storage and just start the car to charge the battery create a lot of engine problems. I bought a 3/98 6 spd coupe with higher mileage and plenty of maintenance. Other sellers in this platform have provided borescope pictures and those sellers get the most money for their cars.

@hitecauto Just because a car had regular servicing and oil changes does NOT mean that it is immune from bore scoring. I have had bore inspections done on a number of 996s and found bore scoring on more than one of them; one of them was a 40AE car that only had 40K on the clock and an engine replacement at 11K. The culprit was more than likely the fact that it spent time in a cold climate and was either 1)not warmed up properly, or 2)was left to idle for too long before being driven. Bore scoring is a risk with any M96 or M97 engine, regardless of displacement, particularly when cars spent any of their lives in colder climates. Bore scoring can still occur in cars that spent their entire lives in warmer climates if they were driven hard without being properly warmed up.

I am very fortunate to be around all types of Porsches everyday and yet I keep coming back to this 40th anniversary. I have to say that the looks, stance and condition are really stunning. Driving it is more like an early air-cooled with the front end light and very responsive. 997s and newer just don't have this same feel, lighter and quick. With the increased power of the X51 and the IPD intake I see why it is called "the poor man's GT3"

@Wogboy With consistent oil changes and excellent servicing along with no serious codes stored in the computer, it was not necessary to perform a borescope of the cylinders at this time.
Actual damage from cylinder scoring in the M96 3.6 engine is not very common. It is more prevalent in the M97 3.8 engine.

@hitecauto I have looked through the service records that go back to 2008 stating 15168 miles on the odometer with Carousel Porsche , clutch replacement is not indicated.
Our PPI shows that the clutch is performing as it should be.
Keep in mind that when the IMS bearing was replaced if the clutch showed and signs of premature wear it would have been.
@Hotwheels We want all of our cars to be very transparent, so our PPI will note items that are showing minor wear or are due for servicing or replacement. In this case, the 40th was due for a front spoiler, spark plugs and coils which were just replaced.
The note on the struts was a sign of very early wear/age. They are not recommended for replacement any time soon and the cars handles very well.
Regarding comment about front struts on PPI, will they need to be replaced?

@GT3-guy I will look into the files to see if/ when the clutch was replaced. With "typical" use, the clutch will last approximately 60K miles.

I do not know why they also removed the engine in conjunction with replacing the IMS. Typically just the transmission is removed.
The drivers side was keyed on the door and the fender and rear quarter was blended. The owner does not have photos of this as he did not think to take any at the time.
And the clutch was replaced right?
