Introduced in late 1996 as Porsche’s premier mid-engine roadster, the Boxster has earned recognition among enthusiasts for its agile and responsive driving characteristics. Commanding an original MSRP of over $60k, this 2003 Porsche 986 Boxster S comes finished in Seal Grey Metallic over a Graphite Grey leather interior and features a 6-speed manual transmission, cruise control, a Bose sound system, Litronic headlights with washers, an aluminum trimmed interior, and 18" Carrera Wheels.  This second-generation 986 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Virginia while showing approximately 78k miles on the odometer.

This 986 is finished in Seal Grey Metallic and features an automatically deploying rear spoiler and a power-retractable black soft top. The factory-optioned 18″ Carrera wheels are fitted with optional colored Porsche crest center caps and come dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport tires dated 2018 and reportedly have approximately 80% tread remaining. The seller believes that the front bumper was refinished to address rock chips. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin presents Graphite Grey standard leather upholstery and black floor mats with Boxster S lettering. Factory-optioned features include cruise control, a Bose sound system & Porsche wind stop, Litronic headlights with washers, and rare aluminum trim for the steering wheel, center console, and door pulls. Amenities also include 8-way power-adjustable seats and automatic climate control. An aftermarket Kenwood radio unit has been added, allowing for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. All electronics and accessories are reportedly working properly.

This Boxster S carries a mid-mounted 3.2-liter flat-six engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This naturally aspirated power plant sends as much as 258 HP and 229 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Porsche Stability Management was equipped from the factory, and stopping power is handled by fixed 4-piston red-painted brake calipers with cross-drilled rotors at each corner. Modifications include H&R lowering springs and a short shifter. The seller notes that the Boxster retains the factory IMS bearing and the CARFAX report shows 29 service history entries.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, sales literature, some documentation, a toolkit, a spare tire, a leather car bra, and a Porsche sunshade.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I sold this car originally in 2021 to a good friend and kept up with it until I had the ability to purchase it again. I absolutely love this car and it has a very thorough record book and maintenance history. Only selling to fund a business venture and it is a third Porsche for me at the moment.”

    Air/oil separator?

  • Amirzatosi (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

    @Porschelover30 Brakes and pads are about 70-80% life
    Suspension is the best part of the car for sure. Firm but comfortable. No rattles or bounce over bumps
    Water pump/thermostat about 15k miles ago.
    If it were me I would probably just do a refresh on the fluids. Not sure the exact date on the trans and brake fluid.
    Other than that it needs nothing at all, just get in and enjoy!

    @amirzatosi
    How are the brakes/pads
    How is the suspension
    What recent maintenance or refresh has it had
    What would be pending within the next 5000 miles

  • Amirzatosi (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

    @CarsSteakGunsWatches Thank you for your comment! The top is in great shape no holes or tears. Can go through a touchless wash and the interior stays bone dry. What you're seeing is basic wear from use.

    That is great to hear that your car is pushing strong with the Factory IMS. I've had a similar experience with my cars. I believe they did a class action lawsuit a while back and they said about 57,000 could be affected and 3,000 of those were turned to claims. So its a pretty small chance both from personal experience and research. I used manager an independent dealership specializing in Porsches. I never had any IMS issues from customers or cars serviced.

    But again, I urge buyers to do their own research and make decisions based off of that and not just comment threads.

    Still open to any questions regarding this specific car. Thanks for the comment!!

    This is identical to my first BoxsterS that I bought in 2003. When the IMS issue came to light I attended a couple of workshop/disscusion groups conducted by Porsche with explanation of cause and remedy. I received a letter from Porsche shortly after of what they were willing to do for the owners of the vehicles with the suspected IMS issue. They were willing to replace, at Porsche's expense, the complete engine if your car was one of the suspected VIN numbers. Mine was not on that list and was told there wouldn't be a problem, and that they had complete confidence in their findings. 20 years latter still no problem. I wish I still had that letter to share, but since it didn't affect me or my car, C'est La Vie.

    @R-car4Me Thanks for the comment!!
    I completely understand and respect that thought process. When it comes down to it, it really is an extremely small percentage of them that are affected. From the hundreds I’ve sold, not a single customer every reported back a IMS failure at any point after sale. Also, there are always minor potential signs to look out for. None of which present on this car.

    That being said, the chances on any 986 (even with the bearing replacement done) aren’t zero. I urge any potential buyers to do any research they like regarding the bearing and failure rates, then make an educated purchase.

    @Amirzatosi-thanks for showing this great looking Boxster S- I, too, have had my share of Boxsters over the years- but I have always seen the need for my own feeling that IMS should be replaced- I can afford the new or used engine, but some people can't- when that goes, your Boxster is worthless, so for that reason I always want the next owner to feel good about what they buy from me and are comfortable about driving their car w/o worry about an issue that from 2000- to 2005 is a big deal

    HELLO ALL! Thanks for visiting my auction. Truly a gorgeous car that will be severely missed. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

  • Amirzatosi (seller) 1 year, 4 monthsago

    @jimcomer thanks for your comment! This one was not optioned with a factory LSD.

    As for the IMS; I can’t speak for the previous owners but during my ownership I just never felt at danger with it. No metal in the filter, no weird noises from the engine, no leaks of any kind. I personally have owned over 10 of these 996/986 cars, (some have it done, others don’t) and sold hundreds more. I don’t really worry about that particular problem. Personal opinion

    Thanks again!
