Now available is this 2003 Porsche 986 Boxster S finished in Basalt Black Metallic with a Natural Leather Brown interior. Introduced in late 1996 as Porsche’s premier mid-engine roadster, the Boxster has earned recognition among enthusiasts for its agile and responsive driving characteristics. Featuring an upgraded IMS bearing as well as a 6-speed manual transmission connected to a 3.2L flat-six engine, this Boxster S is now being offered by its seller out of North Carolina showing approximately 69k miles on the odometer.
This 986 is finished in Basalt Black Metallic (Z4) and features an automatically deploying rear spoiler and a power-retractable black soft top. The optional 18″ alloy wheels are fitted with optional colored Porsche crest center caps and come dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires that were produced in October of 2020 with a reported 1,500 miles driven since. The seller states that there is currently paint protection film on the front bumper, fuel door, and rear quarter panels. Additionally, the seller notes minor scuffs and dents, along with a few stress cracks on the front and rear bumpers. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report that shows an accident in 2008 resulting in replacement of the front bumper.
The interior is trimmed in Brown Natural Leather and optioned with heated Sport Seats. Some wear is noted on the seat bolsters, an aftermarket Rennlie magnetic phone mount has been added, and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly. A complete list of factory options can be found below:
This Boxster S is equipped with a mid-mounted 3.2L flat-six engine that sends as much as 258 HP and 229 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. Porsche Stability Management (PSM) was equipped from the factory, and stopping power is handled by fixed 4-piston red-painted brake calipers with cross-drilled rotors at each corner. The IMS bearing was reportedly replaced in 2015 by Premier Automotive LTD. in Warwick, RI with an LN Engineering Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit piece. An upgraded Borla exhaust has also been installed for increased sound and performance. Service since March of 2021 has included new front and rear hood shocks, desulfating the battery, replacing the tires, performing a Liquimoly Motor Flush, replacing the passenger side convertible top cable, and replacing the ignition switch. The oil was changed most recently in April of 2022.
This sale will include a clean title and some service records.

@burnrubr - thanks your comment. It really is a great car in an awesome spec - so my advice would be put down the strongest bid you feel is right for it.
@Jtbidder Regarding the hood - I think that is the angle of the camera. The hood is even and flush. I added a few more shots taken from above. Regarding the top of the engine picture, getting to the motor on a Boxster is a big job. This one also has the Bose premium sound system which adds more work to that. Given my work schedule today, I will not have the time to take those photos. I can tell you that the last time I was in there was April of 2021 when I replaced the convertible top cable. All hoses and belts looked good, with supple rubber, and no leaks.
I currently have an 08 MX-5 (auto) and an 03 Boxster (manual) I liked this one but I have to restrain myself and wait, lol how far is the current bid on your reserve OP?
Benjamin, I apologize. It just occurred to me that I’ve never actually looked at the engine compartment of a 986 and just saw what it takes to do on YouTube. If you’ve seen it lately, can you simply vouch for condition of hoses, rubber, etc? Thanks.
Good evening Benjamin, a couple of additional questions. 1 - can you add a photo of the engine compartment? And, 2 - Looking at the seam between the front bumper and the front truck lid, it looks a bit uneven and it seems that You can see the tip of the trunk release lever while the lid is closed. Am I seeing this correctly? Is this related to the accident involving the front bumper? Thanks for any clarification you can offer on this!
Bid in the amount of $10,000
@Jtbidder No stickers in any of those locations. I will provide the records I have to the winning bidder, including the contact information for the owner who installed the IMS bearing. He is a solid dude - a long-time Porsche enthusiast and PCA member who had some great stories about the car, including the one about how mad he was when he did the IMS upgrade, as the original bearing they pulled out was in perfect shape.
@bweiner32 Thank you... that's very helpful. Not to beat a dead horse, but have you looked in the various locations IMS retrofitters tend to place the s/n sticker? I've read door jamb, rear trunk lid, front trunk lid... any chance it's there so I can check it off the list? Thanks.
@Jtbidder - I do not have the IMS serial number on any of the paperwork I have. According to the third owner (whom I spoke with) Premier Automotive LTD. in Warwick RI installed an LN Engineering "Single Row Pro" bearing in 2015. As far as things needing attention - there are none. Fresh tires, fresh oil service, the car has no mechanical needs. If I was going to start to daily drive the car, I might consider a preventative maintenance replacement of the water pump - as I believe that it is original and I'm a believer in "old school" maintenance regiments which would dictate replacement at 20 years or 100K.
Hi Benjamin, car looks great. Two questions... 1 - can you provide the IMS Retrofit serial number? and 2 - what, if anything, would you anticipate needs attention on the car? Thank you!
@olazagaj - I have not had a PPI done on the car, but would be happy to facilitate that at the bidder's expense. Hendrick Porsche is local to me, as are a few Porsche and Euro Independent shops. Feel free to connect with me via the "Contact Seller" feature to arrange.
Hi Benjamin,
Any recent ppi performed?
@Musicman2 The IMS was replaced with an LN Engineering solution in 2015, mileage would have been around 48k. There is a glass rear window on this car (2003 was also the first year for a glove box in the 986.). I do have many service records for the car form prior owners and everything under my ownership. I do not know if the clutch has been replaced, there are no records of that however the clutch engages very well and there is no indication of wear or any play. I was told by a prior owner that the accident was a low speed front impact that only required the bumper cover to be replaced.
Has the IMS bearnig issue been resolved? Any leaks? Top glass or plastic window? Has the clutch been serviced? Any service records? Carfax accident-what was the nature?
Thanks,
Nice car.
I personally drove this car last week. Can vouch for car and seller...top notch and as described.
