Up for auction is this 2003 BMW E53 X5 4.6iS finished in Estoril Blue Metallic over an Imola Red Nappa leather interior. The X5 4.6iS was the sport model of the first-generation E53 X5, designed to compete with the Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG in the rapidly growing high-performance SUV segment. The 4.6iS received a unique bored and stroked version of the M62 V8 motor along with larger brakes, model-specific trim, 20” wheels, and sport-tuned suspension. Acquired by the seller in 2018, this X5 4.6iS received a major engine service in 2021 and is now being offered for auction out of New York with approximately 75k miles showing on the odometer.
This E53 is reported to be only of only 422 U.S. examples produced in Estoril Blue Metallic (335) and features special body-colored front and rear valences, dual rectangular chrome exhaust tips, black wheel arch extensions, side skirts, and 20” Style 87 wheels. Additional features include high-gloss black Shadowline trim, black roof rails, xenon headlights with washers, and an integrated roof spoiler. The seller reports degradation of the paint on the roof as well as some other cosmetic imperfections throughout the exterior, detailed images are available in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report. The factory wheels come dressed in a set of Delinte Desert Storm D8 tires.
The interior features power-adjustable heated front sport seats and power-adjustable heated rear seats, upholstered in rare Imola Red Nappa leather with matching door panels, black carpeting, and silver Titan Line trim. This loaded X5 4.6iS also comes equipped with sunblinds for the rear windows, an Anthracite headliner, a power tilt/sliding sunroof, sun protection window glazing, Park Distance Control sensors, self-dimming mirrors, a rear-seat pass-through with an integrated ski bag, and an extendable rear load floor. Driver’s amenities include a leather-wrapped multi-function M-Sport steering wheel with M tri-color stitching, automatic climate control, rear air conditioning, BMW MK4 navigation, a Hi-Fi sound system with 6-CD changer, a variable tachometer with warm-up lights sourced from the E46 M3 and E39 M5, and rain-sensing windshield washers. Signs of wear are depicted on the driver’s seat as well as some missing pixels on the cluster’s OBC and some burnt-out areas on the navigation screen. A new LCD head unit will accompany the sale and the seller reports the keyless entry feature on the key fob is no longer functional.
The 4.6iS is powered by a unique bored and stroked version of BMW’s M62 V8 designated M62TUB46, which features a displacement of 4.6L, all-metal VANOS variable valve timing system, a new intake camshaft, higher compression, increased fueling, and a revised exhaust system. It produced 340 HP and 350 lb.-ft of torque when new and drives all four wheels through a modified 5-speed ZF Steptronic automatic transmission with a shorter final drive ratio and high-stall torque converter for quicker launches. The X5 4.6iS also receives larger brakes and an M-Sport tuned suspension with larger anti-roll bars than a standard X5. Routine oil and fluid changes have been addressed by an in-house mechanic under the current ownership and the seller reports a major engine service was performed by a BMW specialist in 2021 including new timing chain guides.
This sale will include a clean title and a new head unit. One of the original high-performance sport utility vehicles, the X5 4.6iS is a true modern classic. Do not miss out on this rare Estoril Blue over Imola Red 2003 example.

Hello car fellows we are down to last 2 hours and this one still at CL prices. There are many examples of E53s that are getting mid $40k for low mileage and half that for higher mileage cars similar to this and not one of them represented original paint or with an amazing combo. Hope this goes to another enthusiast/ collector otherwise I will just have to make room for it again. Thanks for your interest.

@MXStyles "great looking E53, the superman colors are just spot on. Regarding the clear on the roof, did you happen to get a quote to repair? Just wondering the cost on something like that." Thank you for your compliments. Superman is what this truck was back in the early years of performance SUV. As I am informed estoril blue had adhesion problems in the past and previous owner touched up that area with what I suppose was an entire bottle of touch up paint but it still shows primer at the edges which tells me it is in no danger or having rusting issues. I left it alone just as all the rest of the original panels because that's more important to me than a minor patch which I will probably never look at. I generally pay about $400-600 per body panels depending if you need bodywork or just paint. If you must replace it I would think that's probably around the cost but it's kinda nice to keep this all original and try correcting it with perhaps another full bottle of touch up =) cheaper and you really won't see it unless you are 6'5" or taller. Thanks for your interest
@jlthethird you are not kidding with the barrage of questions but I will answer to best of my knowledge. here we go
1. I’m interested in seeing the documentation for the timing chains job. Was anything else addressed while they were in there? I have found the documentation and just sent to Pcar for them to update, should be showing very soon so keep an eye out for it.
2. You mention the “major mechanicals” being taken care of. Do you have service records for this work? We have serviced all fluids and plugs when first received it and just as of June last year we started hearing some engine noise which lead to the rebuild of the timing mechanisms.
3. Further to #2 - looking for the dates/mileage the below parts were last addressed:
1. Brakes Brakes have not been replaced since we never drove it and it stops fine
2. Tires are in good threads however they could use replacement due to aging.
3. Cooling System It was flushed 2 years ago and no leaks
4. Oil Leaks (valve covers, timing covers, etc) There was a leak however we replaced the both valve cover gaskets when we did the timing.
5. Suspension works as should, firm but not jarring
4. Is the new LCD head unit OEM or something like Avin/Dynavin? The new unit is same replacement unit sold to me as working unit with no damaged LCD.
5. What are the paint imperfections in photo 50? Scratches and paint chipping? That imperfection looks like someone threw an egg and splattered there showing some radial spreading but still original paint and I also decided not to replace it, much rather have it original then repaint and explain the story.
6. Is there water leakage through the sunroof? What is causing the bubbles in the sunroof cover? As it, can the sunroof cover slide back to reveal the sunroof? No leakage at all, these are 20 year old cars and gravity will take hold of them in fact gravity will take hold of everything eventually. It can be taken care of by upholstery guy but will need to clear the foam from experience the foam in between starts separating and loses its adhesion. Best to redo an entire headliner but I still prefer to keep everything as original as possible.
7. Do you have any photos of the dash without the red triangles? If not, what is the error message associated with the red triangles? Red triangles are from shifter sensor that I have replacement coming and will be included with the sale.
That took a moment to write. Thanks for your interest.
Bid in the amount of $6,000
Two more questions:
8. Is the referenced missing bumper cover the cutout in the back between the exhausts? Can a tow hitch be fitted in this spot?
9. Do the rear seats fold down?
Apologies in advance for the barrage of questions, but I’m very interested.

Sorry again for all the questions but, as I said, I’m very interested. If I still lived in Sunnyside I’d be over today to look at it!

@silee20yoo You are probably right if these cars were used in winters and used as a regular daily car. Non of my cars are daily cars and I searched hard to find the correct ones. This X5'd undercarriage looks better than many cars from down south or even way west. Thanks for your opinion however there are always exceptions to all rules.
I personally would avoid used car from NY due to rust from weather...

A low mileage, well sorted, great color combo E53. It doesn't get any better than this!

@Nikojo Will dig out the paperwork and send to Pcars tomorrow. Thank you for your interest.
@Radobob Thank you for your compliment, I will go ahead and get some undercarriage pictures tomorrow.
@msvecharny Thank you it is absolutely a stunning combination.
@Nikojo AC works? AC works
Heat works? Heat works
All 4 seats heat work? I know the front seats work I will test the rears tomorrow
Electronic controls ok on seats? Yes electronic switches works fine
Is there a trim piece missing along top of windscreen? I don't believe so but will go to garage to check and make sure.
Can we see undercarriage pics? Will have pictures added tomorrow
I would also like to add that the rear electric seats recliners works fine, a rare option on these X5s. The sliding tray is also a godsend to get your groceries or just reach inside the hatch once the rear doors are open.
Pictures of the underside of the vehicle would be great. Beautiful truck!
Bid in the amount of $5,000
absolutely sweet spec! Good luck with sale!

Can you post up or is there a way to send the paper work on the major engine work? See exactly what was done?
@lamacan thank you for your bid. I appreciate your opinion however I really do not believe this is a beater car of any sorts course everyone has different levels of allowances and winner can do what they like with their purchase. For me I searched years for an all original car with original paint like this X5 and wasn’t easy. It was 100x easier for me to find a Porsche or Ferrari with original paint and accident free. I would hope buyer would continue to give this car the love it has received from previous owners and myself. What I have spend for the repairs for this X5 could have easily purchased a higher mileage 4.6is with repaint needing all sorts of deferred mechanical gremlins. This is not that and as with all my other vehicles they have been under closed roof and regularly looked after. By all means if you prefer to use it as a beater that is certainly your choice just that it’s getting really hard to find these in this condition. Thanks again for your interest.
Hello fellow car lovers and enthusiasts. Of some of the cars I am planning on putting for sale this one was hard to let go. I believe these somewhat rare 4.6is which incidentally have some tuning association with Alpina the only one in the complete lineups of X5s will be one of the most collectible X5s in the future. These are getting really difficult to find them in original condition with relative low mileage accident free and all original paint. Estoril blue incidentally have been notorious having very poor adhesion properties which in some small areas of this truck has show some loss of paint worst been the patch next to A pillar on the roof. I resisted painting them which would have taken the originality away and besides I never see it since it’s way up there. This truck is among cleanest And most loaded I have encounter throughout my search however it isn’t perfect but most imperfections are easily replaceable. The navigation radio has imperfections on the screen which I have included another unit I purchase and decided not to change leaving for next owners choice. The radiator top black cover has a long crack on it however I have included a brand new piece in box that also leaving for new owner to keep for future addition. Rear bumper cover was not available at the time I ordered and was looking for a new or like new piece online, if I get one before owners purchase I will leave in car. The digital dash cluster has missing pixels and was looking to send the cluster for repairs which I usually see them sent out and returned for $150-200. The major mechanicals have been taken care of and it’s up to next custodian to do what they like to preserve this special color combination X5 4.6is. Thank you for your interests and happy bidding.
this car is the perfect beater. i love it.
