Available for auction is this 2002 Saab 9-3 Viggen Convertible finished in Black over a Charcoal leather interior. Between 1999 and 2002, Saab produced a high-performance version of its 9-3 named Viggen (Swedish for Thunderbolt), after the Saab 37 Viggen aircraft. The Viggen was developed with the help of Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), and features more aerodynamic bodywork, sport seats, a stiffer lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, a performance-tuned ECU, and more. Only 4,600 Viggens would be produced in total. This example was acquired by its current owner in 2018 with approximately 38k miles and is now being offered for auction out of New York while showing just under 44k miles on its odometer.

This Viggen is finished in Black with a power retractable convertible soft top in black, and is believed to be one of 106 examples to leave the factory as such for the 2002 model year. Compared with a standard 9-3, the Viggen features more aerodynamic bumpers and side skirts, and a larger rear wing. The seller notes that the finish remains in very good overall condition, aside from small chips at the front end commensurate with normal road use, and another small chip and rub mark. Detailed images can be found in the gallery. The CARFAX indicates the vehicle was involved in an accident in 2003, however, no additional information is provided. The convertible top was replaced by the current owner in 2020 with an OEM part imported from Germany, and the associated hydraulics were serviced at the same time. Details include headlight washers and wipers, fog lights, and Viggen-specific 17” five-spoke alloy wheels dressed in a set of Continental ExtremeContact tires from 2021.

The cabin is highlighted by a pair of deeply bolstered, heated, and power-adjustable front sport seats upholstered in Charcoal leather with Viggen logos debossed in the backrests. The floors are lined with black carpeting, and the dashboard features contrasting printed grey trim. The seller notes that a small amount of wear is visible on the inside of the driver’s seat, as well as light discoloration on the driver’s floor mat. Amenities include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control, Viggen-branded door sill plates, and a Saab signature center console-mounted ignition switch.

Power comes from a Saab B235R 2.3-liter engine equipped with a Mitsubishi TD04-HL15-5 turbocharger. Thanks to its 9.3:1 compression ratio, Nimonic valves, high-capacity intercooler, performance-tuned ECU, and high-flow exhaust system, the Viggen produces as much as 230 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. The front wheels are driven by way of a reinforced 5-speed manual transaxle with a heavy-duty clutch and pressure plate, and electronic torque-sensing. The suspension of the Viggen is enhanced with stiffer lowered springs and firmer dampers, while stopping power is provided by four-wheel antilock disc brakes with slotted rotors. The CARFAX includes 25 service history records dating back as far as 2002, and the seller notes that regular oil and filter services have been performed along with the replacement of the battery.

This sale will include a clean title.

    @nobrakes :

    Haha the list of eccentric and against-the-grain ownership options is endless.
    Having had a decent amount of experience helping people repair - or attempt to repair - BMWs, this is definitely a serious economic advantage over a lot of its contemporaries. I think of Saabs and Volvos as similar - they are for people who like nice things, but for themselves (and not for show). Anyone with money can buy a BMW convertible. Only someone who really cares buys a performance Saab convertible! Thanks!

    this is the e46 alternative for the quirky hipsters, girls who don't need makeup, counterculturists and handsome young college professors in tweed jackets AND a serious value alternative then and now... GLWTS

    @AnachronIstClassics Thank you

    @BPDCPA :

    Tires are all date-coded 2021, they were replaced recently and the car has not been driven much since, but I don't have en exact tread depth (they look almost new).

    Oil changes and other routine maintenance were done regularly, however the owner did not keep receipts. He took meticulously good care of the car, but did not keep records of anything other than major items like the top replacement (which ran him like $2,100 in July of 2022).

    So my best answer is: Yes, it has been very well cared for, but no, I don't have detailed documentation except the otherwise excellent condition of the car, which I have driven without issues for a better part of the summer (including the 20 mile highway jaunt to its current storage location). And it feels great all around. Hope that is helpful, sorry for lack of available detail.

    Can you provide additional information regarding condition of wear & tear items: brake pads replaced?; tire tread depth or age; original shocks; last fluids service-coolant, brake, power steering; intercooler hoses, etc. Car looks fantastic & they are a great car (I bought a new black Viggen coupe in 2001, drove it about a 100K miles before selling) but age & with low mileage there will always be some deferred maintenance.

    Happy Bidding, I'll be keeping a close watch! Congratulations in advance to the next owner of this peak of Saab performance!

  • AnachronIstClassics (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    Redwoodcitydoc:

    There are photos of the undercarriage towards the end of the gallery. This car has NEVER been driven in winter or stored outside in winter, and the underneath is very clean! The car came from South Carolina prior to living in NY. It has never been exposed to salt. Thanks!

  • Redwoodcitydoc (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    Any photos of the undercarriage? Driven in NY Winters?
    Thanks

  • AnachronIstClassics (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    @nbyond it is a seriously fun car to drive, and the turbo-winding-up is just enough jet noises to make the name feel a little more meaningful!

  • nbyond (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

    I had a '78 900 convertible in college in upstate NY and it was awesome. As much fun in the winter as it is in the summer. And the Saab experience is as unique as it is fun (once you get by the quirks of the key on the floor between the seats, leaving it in reverse to get the key out, etc.). I'm sorely tempted to bid on this one ...
