Available for auction is this 2002 Porsche 986 Boxster S finished in Lapis Blue Metallic over a Black partial leather interior. Inspired by the 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder, the 986 Boxster was Porsche's first water-cooled mid-engine sports car. This 2002 example was acquired by the seller in February of 2021 from a dealer in Mooresville, North Carolina. Since their acquisition, the seller has carried out a number of services including regular oil and filter changes, new brakes, a new battery, and a new convertible top. Factory options included 18” wheels, heated front seats, the Sports Package, and more. This 986 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Colorado while showing just under 75k miles on its odometer.
For the 2002 model year, the Boxster received a mid-cycle visual refresh which included more defined fascias as well as restyled headlights and taillights. This example comes finished in Lapis Blue Metallic with a black power-retractable convertible soft top and can be distinguished as an “S” model by its red-painted brake calipers, silver-colored front grilles, and dual exhaust tip. The seller notes that there are a few minor scratches throughout the finish, and that the convertible top was replaced at approximately 71k miles. A collection of detailed images can be found in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX. Equipment includes a speed-activated rear spoiler, side air intakes, roll hoops, and a set of 18” two-piece BBS Sport Design wheels dressed in Continental Extreme Contact tires from 2018.
The cabin features Black partial leather upholstery with power-adjustable and heated seats. Amenities include automatic climate control, cruise control, an aftermarket head unit, a wind deflector, embroidered floor mats, and power windows and locks. The seller notes that the driver’s seat shows some slight fading and that the driver's windows will not retract with the door open, but confirms that all other gauges, electronics, and accessories remain functional.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter flat-six engine that delivers up to 250 HP and 225 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission. The CARFAX includes 13 service history entries dating back as far as 2011. More recently, several oil and filter services were performed under the care of the seller and new front and rear brakes were installed along with a new battery.
This sale will include a clean title and the original toolkit.

@WRENCH.56 Wow! What an eye! I just operated the top, and when its down the right side of the cover panel is slightly higher than the left by approximate 1/8 inch. Based on a quick inspection with the top half way up, I couldn't tell why the top may not be consolidating as well on the right as it does on the left. It may just need some minor adjustment of the operating framework. I will take a video of the top operation, but I'm not sure when PCARMARKET can get it posted.
No. I don't believe the issue with the top is related to the issue of the driver's side window. The window should automatically drop down about 1/4 inch when the door is opened and automatically re-close when the door is shut. Fixing it will require removal of the door panel and replacement of some electrical controls. I have chosen not to have it fixed on my watch. However, what I do is manually push the window down when I open the door and so it automatically reseat when the door is closed. The passenger window operates correctly both when the door is opened and when it is closed.
As I say, it appears to be a very nice986, but I'm noticing something that may be of concern.
Photos 11,15,16,17,19,20,28,29,31 &32 all show the right side of the panel behind the top and in front of the trunk as being elevated above adjacent body panels. The left side is flush with the adjacent body panels.
Can you quickly post a vid of the top operation?
If you cannot do that in time for the auction to close, would you please address the top operation anf panel fit?
I also noted your comment about one of the windows not being operational if the door is open. Are these issues in any way related? Does the top open and close in a fully normal fashion?
Thanks for considering these issues.
I am a mere 5 hours drive from where you live, so this is a car of interest to me.
@WRENCH.56 I'm several years past my racing days. Around town I only drove it for special occasions on sunny, dry days. Obviously, my long distance travel did have some variable weather conditions and gave me a chance to "blow out the cobwebs" at Interstate speed limits.
Living where you do, I'm somewhat amazed that you can resist the temptation!
But then, if you were running laps, the car probably wouldn’t appear as nice as it does and might have a few repairs that you didn’t have to go through.
It is a nice looking 986!
@WRENCH.56 No laps for me. Just normal driving around town and on some trips.
Have you been putting in laps at High Plains with this Boxster?

@Gallahad Thank you for bringing this error to my attention. I just spoke with the PCARMARKET representative, he agrees with you, and will correct the text of the car description. Also, thank you for your positive feedback regarding my previous response. I hope you'll find what you want.
@dcdurant thanks for the quick reply, a quick reply and an honest answer is valuable even if the answer is that you don't know (at least to me).
@Gallahad Sorry. I don't know the answers to your questions. The car is just like I bought it and I never realized that the radio is an after-market item. So, what they did when they installed it is a mystery to me.
Hi @dcdurant The car looks to be in very good shape cosmetically. The description states "Amenities include automatic climate control, cruise control, a factory CD stereo, a wind deflector, embroidered floor mats, and power windows and locks." The pictures however show an aftermarket stereo though, is the original radio included? Do you know if the aftermarket radio was installed via an adapter kit or were wires cut to install this unit? I would be looking to do the Porsche Classic head unit available for these cars that add's modern infotainment features and if the original wiring is intact that would be a much easier transition. Thanks and GLWA.
My name is Dave. Welcome to this auction for my Boxster S. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. And, rest assured that I will answer all questions to the best of my ability in a timely manner.
One question that people typically ask is; “Why are you selling?”. In this case, this answer is: “Reluctantly.” I just have too many vehicles, and I’ve had to make a very difficult decision regarding which ones to sell. I have really enjoyed the Boxster and have found it to be a pleasure to drive. I’ve made 4 significant long-distant trips of over 1500 miles each. Those trips provided the opportunity to experience how well the Boxster performs. And, I never was disappointed. I’d also expect that you will enjoy the same types of experiences.
@onlymanuals As far as I know this is the original clutch. It seems quite tight and I have had no signs of slippage.
Is this still on the original clutch? Any signs of slipping?
