We are pleased to offer this extremely rare 2002 Porsche 996 GT2 finished in Guards Red (L84A) over black leather. 303 Porsche 996 GT2 sports cars were delivered to the United States throughout the production cycle and only 19 are believed to have come finished in Guards Red worldwide. This “widowmaker” was delivered new to Hoffman Porsche of Connecticut and shares the same hue as the original 996 GT2 press car as well as the example on display at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen.
Based on the 911 Turbo, the GT2 was designed as the most hardcore road-going 911 available at the time, with a specially tuned version of the twin-turbocharged 3.6L Mezger engine sending over 456hp and 457lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. The GT2 achieves a 10%+ increase in power over that of the standard 911 Turbo by using larger K-24 turbochargers as well as increased compression and boost pressure. A 6-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) came as standard equipment. The brakes consist of 6-piston calipers in the front and 4-piston calipers in the rear. Additionally, the GT2 also received a lowered sport-tuned suspension, and adjustable anti-roll bars from the factory. While the 996 GT2 shares its wide fenders, side air intakes, and rockers with the 996 911 Turbo, it features a unique fixed rear wing with air inlets to facilitate increased airflow to the motor, a more aggressive front end, a larger front splitter, and reshaped front air inlets for increased cooling.
The cabin of this GT2 is upholstered in black leather with extensive exclusive options including red seatbelts, a leather-covered ignition lock surround, a carbon fiber steering wheel, carbon fiber door sills, door handles, door storage compartment lids, dashboard trim, air vents, a carbon fiber shifter, handbrake lever, and a carbon fiber center console between the seats. This car also sports a set of Porsche factory Recaro bucket seats with Porsche crested headrests as well as a Porsche factory stainless-steel rear roll cage. The following equipment codes are listed on the original specifications label.
Under prior ownership, this GT2 was upgraded with a GMG WC GT sport exhaust, GMG WC GT headers, GMG diverter valves, a GMG/GIAC software package, and 19” Champion three-piece wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Sport (N2) tires. The original exhaust, headers, Turbo wheels, seats, and other assorted items are said to accompany the sale.
This GT2 was acquired by its owner out of California in 2013 and has been enjoyed sparingly over the past 9 years, primarily on short drives to and from Lime Rock Park for display and spectator events. Some service records are available from previous owners, as well as all records from the current ownership. The seller adds the car has been routinely serviced by an extremely reputable Porsche specialist in the Northeast.
A few minor paint chips were touched-up upon the owner’s purchase in 2013 and clear paint protection film has since been applied over the front-end. The car has reportedly never seen track use and has been kept beneath a Porsche indoor car cover in a heated garage throughout the current ownership. Some minor scuff marks are noted on the lower front splitter. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report and other documentation.
This GT2 is now being offered for auction by its owner out of New York showing approximately 36k miles on the odometer, accompanied by a set of two keys, owner's manuals, records, and a clean title.

I just spoke to GMG to see if they have any records going back to when they tuned the car for the previous owner. They said they do not keep records going that far back. However, when I explained the physical engine modifications, they said that a 200 RPM increase in the redline would not be uncommon for a GIAC/GMG tune.
Furthermore, when I discussed the DME report with them, they said verbatim “finding a car like this, with that DME report, is like finding a diamond in the rough.”

Switchcars – thank you for the clarification regarding the Guards Red production numbers.

Switchcars – thank you for your question. Yes, the GIAC tune definitely raised the redline, as it was a customized tune for the car given the additional hardware components. I believe the tune raised the redline to 6950 RPM, but I do not have a description of the specifics of the customized tuning program that documents this. I tried calling GMG just now, but they are not yet open given they are in California. I will try to reach them again in a few hours to see if I can get further clarification or documentation. Please also see the link pasted below from the GMG website describing their customization capabilities.

Just as a matter of clarification, there were 317 996 GT2s for the US, of those 16 were Guards Red, as opposed to 303/19 as mentioned in the description. This info courtesy of GTvault.

Does the GIAC tune raise the redline? If that is the case, it could serve to allay concerns about the range 2 overrevs. (factory redline is 6750 IIRC).
Recent range 2s COULD be concerning, but they also may not be. It's the inherent flaw with the v1 Durametric; no way to know if a Range 2 was 7200 or 10000.

NewManJeans – thank you for your compliment as well as your questions. I do not have any specifics regarding the GIAC/GMG tune. The previous owner was from California, if that is helpful. I have always used 93 in the car, and I have never had any issues. Finally, to answer your last question… no, I did not receive a GIAC mobile flash loader when I bought the car.
Beautiful GT2.
Do have any details on the GIAC tune? Specifically, I am looking for when it was done and how aggressive (for 91 or 93 octane fuel).
Did you get a GIAC mobile flash loader when you bought the car that accompanies the sale? It should have been an option when the previous owner had it tuned.

This car is nice as hell. I'd take it over the one that sold last week for $250k on BaT. How its still sitting below $100k is a mystery....
@Bode997 Thank you again for clarifying that you are going based off you own personal opinion here. That's really all I wanted to make clear was that your statement of "NOTHING should be concerning" is your opinion and not fact based on the actual industry numbers.
I agree the Mezger engine is quite the engine and very stout but bringing your 996 GT3 into the conversation around DME is irrelevant unless it has a similar DME report and hit the same rev 2 as the GT2. I know you state that the "The motor was designed, and performs better, when used as Hans designed it" to make a point but you contradict yourself because this GT2 engine certainly hasn't been used much under your care...
My opinion from my desk is also that your engine is likely perfectly fine. Nice car and best wishes with the sale.
Sberger6 - Thank you again for your questions. 1) The roll-bar is a factory Porsche part that is bolted, as previously mentioned. 2) Your requested photos of the anchor points should be uploaded shortly. I appreciate your interest in the car.
996gt2 – Again, thank you for your interest in my GT2. If you are an actual interested bidder, and your concerns are real, vs hypothetical, I would like to invite you to have a leak down test done, a PPI done, another DME report conducted, and/or any other inspection that would make you feel more comfortable. I am happy to show you the car in person and to any technician that perhaps you would like to look it over. I believe that your concerns are unwarranted, but please, let me reiterate, this is my opinion. It is also the opinion of Dan Jacobs of Hairy Dog Garage, based out of Connecticut. For those unfamiliar with Dan, he is one of the most well respected and honest Porsche Specialists on the entire East Coast (anyone who has been at a track day or a race event, no matter the track, will know exactly who I am talking about). Dan has cared for my Sports Cars, my GT3 Cup Race Cars, and my unique Audi Sports Cars for over 15 years. I have a 996 GT3 Street Car, that has a full interior, and can be driven to and from my home in upstate NY to LRP and back, and the car will run 58 seconds at LRP. My 996 GT3 has 60k miles on it and the Mezger engine runs and pulls like it should be winning multiple classes at Le Mans (since that is what the engine was designed to do). The motor was designed, and performs better, when used as Hans designed it. I reiterate my previous statement that there is NOTHING to be concerned about with regards to the DME report, nor anything else I have represented in this auction.
@Bode997 On the topic of DME results, I agree that there is likely not an issue but to say that "NOTHING should be concerning" is not true, 13 seconds at Rev range 2 could mean literally 13 seconds at 7250, which is nothing concerning or it could mean 13 seconds at a much higher range and being that it happened 17.5 hours ago and the rule of thumb is if the time to last occur is over 50 hrs you are considered in the clear, this is technically something to take into consideration and COULD be a concern.

Can you comment on the DME report? Seems to be a bit concerning, especially if never tracked. Thanks
911gt2 - Thank you for your question. The red gauges are Porsche factory products and the care was delivered with them installed. Please see the build code X45E in the documents that I uploaded.
ZF - Again, thank you for your interest. The answer to your second question regarding the DME report can be found in the document I uploaded today.
Bid in the amount of $77,000
Is the red gauge cluster aftermarket? I don’t see it listed as an option. Some of the aftermarket replacements were known to distort over time. Could you grab a closer shot? Thanks
Sberger6 - Thank you for your questions. 1) The roll-bar is a factory Porsche part that is bolted. I will take detailed pictures of the anchor points and the roll-bar tomorrow. 2) The PCCB brakes are in excellent condition and are routinely checked. I appreciate your interest in the car.
ZF - Thank you for your questions. 1) To my knowledge the coolant pipes have not been welded. The car has never been tracked, and thus I have never been concerned about it. That being said, I will check with my mechanics tomorrow to see if they are aware of pinning prior to my ownership. 2) I do not have all the documents in front of me because I have been traveling this weekend, but I will review them and get back to you tomorrow once I am home. 3) I do not have pictures of the under-body, but my mechanics might, and I will check with them tomorrow. 4) Parts of the front bumper, the fenders, and the hood were touched up before I installed the clear wrap protection over the front of the car. I appreciate your interest in the car.
Bid in the amount of $70,000
Is the cage a bolt-in or welded design? Do you have pics of the anchor points? What condition are the PCCB's?
Bid in the amount of $60,000
Bid in the amount of $50,000
Have a few questions
Are the lines pinned/welded
Do you have a pic of the DME, if so can we see
Any pictures of the underbody?
Has any part of the car been resprayed at any point? Or are touch-ups the only paintwork done to the car?
Thanks
