Up for auction is this 2001 Porsche 996 Turbo Coupe finished in Polar Silver Metallic over a black full leather interior. Marking the inaugural model year for the 996 Turbo, this 2001 example features a Tiptronic shiftable automatic transmission, three-spoke leather steering wheel, exclusive aluminum instrument dials, the Digital Sound Package, and supple leather seating. It also features an upgraded aftermarket exhaust and performance ECU tune. Acquired by its third and current owner about a year ago, this Turbo shows just over 52k miles on the odometer and is now being offered for auction out of Indiana benefitting from a recent full service.
This Turbo is finished in Polar Silver Metallic and features wide fenders, rear side air intakes, and a speed-activated rear spoiler. A few minor chips are noted on the front bumper and some scrape marks are present on the lower front spoiler. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This example retains its factory 18” Turbo wheels featuring optional colored Porsche center crests. The wheels are currently dressed in Bridgestone Potenza tires and the rear tires were replaced within the last 100 miles.
Inside, you will find a black full leather interior with an optional three-spoke leather steering wheel, supple leather seats, and exclusive aluminum instrument dials. Additional equipment includes left seat lumbar support, heated front seats, the Digital Sound Package, and an AM/FM radio with a CD player. The cabin is described to have been very well preserved with all features and accessories working properly.
Tracing its roots back to the GT1 Le Mans race car, the 3.6L twin-turbocharged Mezger flat-six engine is capable of producing up to 415 HP and 415 lb.-ft of torque stock. All four wheels are driven by way of an optional 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission which allows for both manual and automatic gear changes using either the gear selector or shift buttons mounted on the steering wheel. This 2001 example has been fitted with an upgraded SpeedTech exhaust and a Softronic ECU tune for increased sound and power output. The original exhaust will accompany the sale as depicted in the photo gallery. Since the current owner’s purchase within the last year, a four-wheel alignment was performed along with a full service and inspection including a new ignition lock assembly, alternator, spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, air filters, serpentine belt, and mass airflow sensor. A corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery.
This sale will include the original owner's manuals, a toolkit, jack, spare tire, factory muffler, service records, and a clean title. Offering incredible value and performance, this 996 Turbo is just waiting for a new owner to get behind the wheel and enjoy.

@JPD Engine pics and records are included. Porsche has never suggested this to be completed and as stated, the car is original from the brilliant engineers who designed these amazing machines.
Bid in the amount of $36,500
However your response is still not a definitive answer. Previous owners may or may not have had it done. Would be nice to know!
Thanks for checking for me. That's true that you are not allowed on most tracks without proof of either pinning or welding as when the coolant pipes separate, and at some point they will, they lose pump out all their coolant onto the track or road....
@JPD I appreciate the question and have just called my mechanic and checked with two Porsche resources who have all said this is for those who want to track a car. This car has never been tracked, is in perfect mechanical order. I suppose the buyer could decide if this makes sense for them. Apart from the exhaust, and maintenance this is a factory original car.
Do a Google search and see the images. Then look at your engine to compare.
Mezger coolant pipes welded
Mezger coolant pipes pinned
It's a $4-5k engine out job at the indy shops
Your mechanic would know whether they have been done. It is the inherent weakness the mezger.
@JPD I’m not sure how to know. Happy to check or private message me.
@collectorcars @collectorcarschicago Tips are under appreciated but gaining in a wider understanding of their value in performance and maintenance. I’ve been a long time Porsche fanatic and had this car at many shows. Most guys who understand the engineering behind these get it.
Have the coolant pipes been pinned or welded?

@seller all records are included? My last one sat for two years due to no records and tip
@msobilo This is not the original to the car but one similar showing an estimated build value.
Bid in the amount of $35,750
An additional invoice from Speedtech has been attached. I want to make sure this extra value is noted here. The Speedtech exhaust is a bolt-on addition adding an estimated 50-85hp. I can tell you that you feel it in the seat and the sound is amazing moving from the heavy factory exhaust. I am including the original exhaust with the transaction. Happy Bidding.
Maybe this has been asked already and sorry if it has. Is that window sticker correct? It mentions grey leather and sunroof delete. Looks like black leather and it has a sunroof. Am I missing something? Or just blind? Thank you.
@viavaquero 1. I'm in Indiana and we don't require smog testing so I couldn't tell you if it does or not.
2. No Codes. Everything is functionally properly.
3. Rear Wing: I assume it is original. The spoiler/wing extends once the vehicle reaches 74 mph and retracts flush as the vehicle slows to 37mph. Pictures of the wing raised and lowered are included in the photos. There is no hydraulic leak and the wing was tested upon my purchase of the vehicle. You can manually keep the spoiler/wing in the extended or up position with a toggle switch on the dash. It is in full working order.
4. One key goes with the sale.
When was your Turbo last smog tested, did it pass? Any codes currently or items not functioning properly for the smog test?
Does the rear wing function properly, both manually and automatically when driving? Any hydraulic leaks from the rear wing? Is it the original rear wing?
How many Keys goes with he sale? Thanks

The ignition and mass airflow sensor were both completed over 2,000 miles ago, FWIW. I've driven this car in multiple car show events and short road trips with Porschephiles. I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my cars.
@sosmos Thanks for the question. The car was never turning off and on but did have an issue with the ignition switch which was replaced. The mass airflow was also throwing an error so we replaced it at the same time. All these were done upon purchase of the car and it has been driven many miles since. I would feel comfortable driving it to CA from IN right now. However, most folks will likely want it put on a trailer. Amazing driving car. Only selling because, unfortunately, my wife prefers the older slower cars...
According to some of the bills, it seems that last year the car was turning off while driving and an issue with the electrical systems holding charge. Were these issues and others sorted following the service and are there any current active issues to be aware of? Thank you.

Thanks for the knowledge I owned a turbo myself and found the auto matic was much better than me clutch
@Pinojpino Tips have an automated redline shift, unlike manuals. These cars shift faster and smoother making them both competitive and fun to drive.
How many times did you hit the red line

@rreasen The Carfax also indicates that the repair was completed by John Fricker automotive.
@sosmos Both were replaced. Their system shows the printout as attached but I will see if I can have them send me the completed invoice. It was completed.
Hi there, the invoices indicate that the spark plugs and fuel pump replacement were declined, just wanted to get clarification on this. Thank you
