Produced from 1998 through 2002, the E36/8 M Coupe remains among BMW’s lowest volume production models ever, in particular those equipped with the venerable S54 engine found in the E46 M3. A total of 678 U.S. specification S54-equipped M Coupes are believed to have been produced, featuring a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Finished in Steel Grey Metallic, this example has been extensively mechanically serviced and restored. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York showing approximately 116k miles on the odometer.
The M Coupe was designed with the goal of increasing the torsional and structural rigidity of the Z3 roadster's chassis, and as such, all body panels from the A-pillars forward are shared between the two models. Factory optioned with a Steel Grey Metallic (400) finish, this example is said to have been refinished under previous ownership. Details include front fender vents, an M-specific front fascia quad exhaust outlets, and staggered-width 17″ Style 40 wheels. The wheels come dressed in Kumho Ecsta tires driven less than 200 miles. The seller adds that the front bumper corner markers, plate holder, and rear wiper have been removed, and some paint cracking is noted near the antennae along with minor paint imperfections throughout. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing damage in 2007 which the seller states to have been cosmetic damage that has since been repaired.
The cabin is appointed with full black Nappa leather upholstery extending to the upper door panels and center console. Factory features include a leather-wrapped M-Sport steering wheel with M tri-color stitching, heated and power-adjustable bolstered sport seats, M-branded door sills guards, and chrome trim pieces. Amenities include power windows and locks, a glass sunroof, automatic climate control, and a Harman Kardon audio system. The seller adds that the shifter has been rebuilt, a new weighted ZHP shift knob has been installed, and new OEM floor mats have been fitted.
The 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine sends power to the rear wheels through a ZF 5-speed manual transaxle with a factory-equipped limited-slip differential. Modifications include a Bimmerworld CSL airbox with map sensor conversion, aftermarket catless headers with Eisenman Mufflers (no CEL), Ground Control coilovers with H&R sway bars, stainless steel brake lines, a lightweight flywheel, a Mishimoto radiator with dual automatic electric fans, a Garagistic rear camber and toe kit, Weichers Sport strut tower brace painted wrinkle black, OEM fender magnets, Z8 strut tower dust caps retrofitted in the trunk to accommodate taller rear shocks, and a Kassel Performance dyno tune which made 295 WHP on their Mustang dyno. The CARFAX report shows extensive maintenance history and the seller reports the rod bearings have not been serviced although the following items have already been carried out:
This sale will include a clean title.

Hello to all bidders and commenters so far. I have scanned my service records from 2021 that shows a large portion of the mechanical maintenance that was done by Kassel Performance after purchasing the car a few months prior. This includes a valve adjustment and new NGK spark plugs done at 108k miles. Last year I also installed 6 brand new OEM Delphi coils myself around 115k miles.
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
@M_Dennis87 happy to answer all of your questions. I was told by the previous owner that it was backed into in a parking lot, which resulted in the hood, front fender panel and door skin getting replaced. I have service records (I just scanned and will add to the listing now) from Kassel Performance when I had the car worked on in 2021 where the valve adjustment was done, I supplied plugs for them to install as well. I replaced the coils with OEM Delphi myself at home last year. Clutch has unknown miles but feels very good. The shifter does lean to the left slightly. Seat bushings were done last year and there is no rocking. The rearview mirror does not auto dim anymore but still is perfectly clear to see out of. Any more questions feel free to ask!
Apologize in advance for the laundry list of questions, but very interested party here...
Do you have any info on the accident reported on the Carfax? You state it was cosmetic only, but do you know where on the car the damage occurred? Do you have records of a valve adjustment? Spark plugs & coils? Clutch? Does the shifter recenter itself (shifter appears to be leaning in 5th gear in pics and not straight up in neutral)? Is the drivers seat solid and doesn't rock forward and back? Is the rear view mirror auto dimming function still working (appears discolored)?
Holy cow, that carbon airbox. The sound. Wow.
Awesome car, color combo and modifications. Talk about a real weapon underneath an unassuming stock look. Whoever wins this car is a lucky person, with lots of smiles to come.
