Powered by a 4.9-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential, this 2001 BMW M5 comes finished in Carbon Black Metallic. Among the 29 North American examples reportedly configured with an M-Texture Alcantara interior, this M5 is said to be one of just 27 specified for the Canadian market. It also features a sunroof, xenon headlamps, power-adjustable and heated front seats, automatic climate control, and more. This E39 M5 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York with approximately 130k kilometers or 81k miles showing on the odometer.

The E39 M5 maintains the elegant styling of the E39 5 Series while incorporating subtle performance enhancements, such as a more aggressive front and rear bumper and side skirts, setting it apart from the standard model. This example is finished in Carbon Black Metallic and features a sunroof, xenon headlamps with washers, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, and quad exhaust outlets. The seller notes that the hood, front bumper, trunk, and left front fender have been refinished, and there is a small ding near the grille. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with an accident-free CARFAX report.

The interior boasts power-adjustable, heated front sport seats upholstered black leather with extremely rare M-Texture Alcantara inserts extending to the door panels, center console, and lower dashboard. It has a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and aluminum accents on the upper dashboard, center console, and doors. Amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, and navigation. The seller notes some wear on the shift knob and e-brake handle, as well as missing pixels on the instrument cluster, although all other gauges and electronics are in proper working order with no warning lights illuminated.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.9-liter S62 V8 engine featuring individual throttle bodies and double-VANOS variable valve timing, which delivers a factory-rated 394 HP and 369 lb.-ft of torque to rear wheels through a Getrag 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The battery was replaced during current ownership, and the clutch slave cylinder was replaced in 2023.

This sale will include the owner’s manuals, a toolkit, an air pump, a car cover, one valet key, and a clean title. The CARFAX report indicates a potential odometer rollback in January 2012.

The seller would like you to know: “This is an enthusiast-owned BMW E39 M5 from my personal collection (@my_cars_of_deal on Instagram), which has been very well cared for and maintained. This is not your average M5 as this is a very rare 1 of 29 North American factory spec car with a beautiful M-Texture interior. I own an E46 M3 competition with the same interior and had to have this when I saw it for sale in Canada. It took a lot of effort and cost (roughly $7,000) to get it to my door and have it titled in the US. When I received it, it had more wear on the hood and bumper than I had anticipated; therefore, I had those parts, as well as the fenders, professionally painted. As you can see from the photos and videos, the car is beautiful and looks very good. This car is fast and comfortable, especially on the highway. I recently went on an 8-hour road trip and was really impressed with how it drives and handles. Why am I selling? I am downgrading my 14-car collection, and I am ready to let someone else enjoy this beauty. I am here to answer any questions and can show the car to any interested parties. All the hard work has already been done to get this special car to the States; this is a rare opportunity!”

@Gtgoff It was probably there for a while (after hood was painted) and I did not notice it. I tried my best to take detailed videos with commentary so to describe and show the car as honestly as possible. No professional photos or editing, just an honest and rare car from a real deal enthusiast

  • Gtgoff (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Albertnigri thank you - both super helpful. I haven't had an E39 in a few years, so can't remember whether that part of the grille surround has a secondary layer (ie the reinforcements) behind it, preventing PDR, or not. Thankfully E39 hoods aren't hard to find - just hard to make carbon black paint match if having to do any paintwork on it.

  • Albertnigri (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Gtgoff The paint matching is excellent as depicted in the detailed videos and photos. I only realized the trunk was painted because of the badge, it done prior to my ownership and looks great. I did not check on a PDR solution, I literally noticed it as I was making the video and have not driven the car since.

  • Gtgoff (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

I just noticed that the M5 badge is pretty far from where it should be in placement on the trunk. Is the paint quality fairly close to perfectly matching all around (including the clear)? A little surprised for a body shop to get the badge location that far off (presumably didn't use the proper template to locate it), hopeful they're better at the rest of the work. Separately, have you checked with PDR folks to see whether the dent in the grille is fixable without body/paint work? Presumably that happened after the last hood repaint?

  • Gtgoff (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@BigBooter thanks - did some more checking and agreed on the TCG, though RBs may be good to take care of ASAP just for safety and peace of mind.

@GTgoff - TCG & RB are absolutely great things to do, but not really necessary at this low of mileage on the S62 engine. This motor runs far cooler than the M62's and those typically need TCG's around 100k or so (depending on how the car was maintained throughout it's life) Best way for a quick diagnose is to get an oil sample and drop the oil pan for inspection. Check the oil pickup screen as well. Guides will leave plastic bits and the oil sample will tell you if the RB's are wearing down. Both don't "typically" happen on an S62 until the 150k or more mark.

  • Albertnigri (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Gtgoff not under my ownership and I have limited service records from previous owners. The car was inspected by BIMMERCLINIC in NJ when I bought it and only a couple of minor items needed attention.

  • Gtgoff (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Just to confirm, timing chain guides and rod bearings haven’t been done yet, right?

@vettefish correction. It was in KM while in California but was then reported in Miles in Canada starting on 1/2012 and you can see Carfax actually showed the conversion (93999 km or 58408 miles). You can also see it jump back and forth from miles to km during my ownership in New York. I guess it's hard to keep it consistent but it all adds up. Thanks

  • Albertnigri (seller) 1 month, 4 weeksago

@vettefish the previous owner clarified it and it all matches up. The car was originally a Canadian car (in km) brought to California (where car fax kept reporting in Km) then back to Canada (still in Km) and then to me in New York. It all lines up as none of the records are in Miles ,all in Kilometers. Thanks for reaching out

  • Albertnigri (seller) 2 monthsago

@vettefish Hi, I was not aware of this but the only "Carfax" I was shown was the Canadian report and it did not include this discrepancy. I will review any service records and will contact the original seller and Carfax so I can give you an educated response. I understand clerical errors may happen when importing a car however the discrepancy appears to have happened before it was imported. In addition, the numbers would not equate when converting from KM to Miles or vice versa.Thank you for reaching out, I will respond as soon as I have more information .

  • vettefish (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

Can you shed light on the odometer rollback? Was this a switch to KM's or what happened here?
