Available for auction is this 2001 BMW 540i finished in Jet Black over a black leather interior, equipped with the desirable Sport Package. In 1995, the E39 was introduced as the fourth generation of the BMW 5-Series executive sedan and was distinguished from previous models using improved aluminum chassis components. Meticulously cared for by its original owner in California and with nearly $9k in recent service, this 540i is now being offered for auction with approximately 21k miles on the odometer.
This example is finished in Jet Black and comes equipped with 17” Style 66 alloy wheels dressed in new Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season tires. The Sport Package adds high-gloss Shadowline trim while standard equipment includes Xenon low-beam headlights and Halogen foglights. The seller describes the exterior to be in excellent condition and that a paint correction has been recently completed. Detailed images can be found in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The interior is appointed in black leather and features Sport Seats and an M-Sport multifunction steering wheel as part of the Sport Package. This example has been optioned with an electric rear sunshade and the Premium Sound System with DSP. Factory equipment includes a power moonroof, automatic climate control, automatic dimming inside mirror, speed-sensitive power steering assist, and a driver’s seat memory system with 10-way power-adjustable front seats.
Beneath the hood, the 540i is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering up to 282 HP and 309 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels. The Sport Package equips a sport-tuned 5-speed Steptronic automatic transmission along with a Sport Suspension system. Standard equipment includes Adaptive Transmission Control, All Season Traction, Dynamic Stability Control, and Dynamic Brake Control. The E39 also features an aluminum double-pivot strut-type front suspension and a 4-link integral rear suspension. A service has been recently completed in preparation for sale and a corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery.
This sale will include the original window sticker and a clean title.

Thank you everyone who participated and bid on the 540i, today wasn't the day for it to find a new home. Until next time!
Bid in the amount of $17,790
@jwriggins - The 540i received an extensive service that included everything our BMW Master Tech advised us it needed including Synthetic oil. You can view the the detailed invoice in the gallery. Previous invoices were not retrievable due to a change in the software system.
Bid in the amount of $17,540
@Stunt_Road Synthetic oil has been used? The chain guide and tensioner fail, partially due to mileage, but age, frequency of oil change, and oil type matter. Synthetic oil change yearly is reportedly preferred.
There is only one service history listed for the car. That seems unusual.....is it correct?
@jwriggins - The BMW runs flawlessly so there has been no reason to attend to the chain guides. As you pointed out that is typically an issue at much higher mileage.
Has the chain guide or tensioner been replaced or serviced? It can be problematic in this model...usually at higher miles. However, at 21 years my BMW tech says it prob should be replaced simply due to age. Please advise.
Thx
@halvkd - That is a clerical error from 2016.
@Firewood - A photo of the current odometer reading 21,467 miles has been added to the gallery.

Looks sweet. But can you please post a pic of the current mileage showing on the odometer? Thanks.
Bid in the amount of $15,250
Stated mileage is 21k, but the Carfax shows last mileage in 2016 of 24k. Can you clarify? Thank you.
@spoolinyc - Thanks for the questions. The paint meter readings are indicative of all original paint. Visually the paint quality and consistency is that of original paint. To be clear the paint is ALL original and in stunning condition. There are no short comings to post. The paint is highly reflective so things you may be seeing are reflections rather than any issues. Any spots you may see are from cleaning the BMW post paint correction and not embedded in the paint. The front and rear bumper covers also boast original paint and have some scratches which are visible in the gallery photos. The 540i Sport is part of private collection and has a dedicated detailer on staff thus there is no receipt.
@Stunt_Road 2nd question. What is the story with this car? Any prior paper work confirming the mileage is accurate?
Do you have paper work for paint correction? What was done exactly? Some photos show the paint is not really clean. It doesn’t have the glow as I have experienced after proper paint correction. I can still see water marks in some photos.
Can you post photos pointing out defects and scratches? Some scratches maybe hidden due to recent polish. But can still be visible in the light. Thanks in advance.
I see the paint meter numbers. Can someone explain if it’s been painted? I can never know how to interpret the meter numbers. They are all over the place. German cars. Never seem to amaze. 2Xk miles and a $8500 bill. I always say BMW with 20k is the same as 120k miles.
