The original Porsche 911 GT3 was introduced as a road-going homologation model for the FIA GT3 Cup race series in 1999, featuring a 3.6-liter Mezger flat-six engine derived from the Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 race car. The first 996 GT3 variant was never offered for sale in the United States, and only 1,868 examples were produced for rest-of-world markets between 1999 and 2001. This 2000 example was sold new in Japan and comes finished in Biarritz White over a black interior with leather Recaro bucket seats. Cared for by its original owner in Japan until it was purchased and imported to the U.S. by the seller in 2025, this rare 996.1 GT3 is now being offered for auction out of Florida with approximately 44k kilometers or 27k miles showing on the odometer.

Based on the stiffened steel bodyshell of the Carrera 4, the GT3 is distinguished from other 996 models by its revised front spoiler, side skirts, and fixed body-colored rear wing. This example is finished in Biarritz White (L9A2) and features red brake calipers mounted behind 18” Sport Design two-piece wheels. The seller notes that new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires were recently installed, and some minor paint chips are present on the front bumper. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The black interior features a pair of leather fixed-back Recaro bucket seats and a three-spoke leather steering wheel. Accessories include GT3-branded door sills, automatic climate control, a central locking system, an onboard computer, and a Porsche CR-220 stereo. Some small scratches are noted on the center console near the ashtray.

Featuring integrated dry-sump lubrication, titanium connecting rods, lightweight pistons, and a nitride-hardened crankshaft, the 3.6-liter Mezger M96/79 flat-six engine was factory-rated at 360 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 6-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. Stopping power comes from fixed 6-piston front and 4-piston rear brake calipers with cross-drilled rotors. The GT3’s suspension includes uprated wheel bearings and rod ends, adjustable coilovers, and adjustable anti-roll bars. The seller notes that an oil change was completed before the car was imported approximately 300 miles ago, and a brake fluid flush was recently performed. Service records are said to be available dating back to the original owner’s purchase.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a battery trickle charger, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Hello everyone, this is our 996.1 GT3. It is in pristine condition and very well taken care of. It is a very special variant that will be revered as one of the greats. Some key takeaways:

  • 1. Only 1,868 examples made, 308 of which were right-hand drive.
  • 2. Although NO registry exists, Biarritz white is deemed to be the rarest color.
  • 3. Like all of Porsche’s RS-badged models, the GT3 was originally outlawed from sale in North America on safety and emissions grounds.
  • 4. The starting point for each GT3 was the stiffer, reinforced galvanized steel bodyshell from the 996 Carrera 4 Coupe. To this, new mounting points were added for the engine and gearbox.
  • 5. Left-hand drive GT3s came with a long-range 89-litre fuel tank, but right-hand drive cars originally came with a smaller 64-litre unit.
  • 6. The GT3’s party piece was its all bells and whistles Type M96/76 engine, which, unlike the regular Carrera motor, was derived from the Hans Mezger-designed GT1 power unit. Compared to the 3.4-litre Flat 6 fitted to the 996 Carrera, the GT3 engine had 4mm bigger cylinder bores (100mm) and a 1.6mm shorter stroke (76.4mm). Displacement was 3600cc, which represented a gain of 213cc.
  • 7. The M96/76 also featured a low-friction valve train, plus lightweight forged pistons and titanium connecting rods.
  • 8. Unlike the later 996.2, the 996.1 GT3 has a mechanical throttle cable. This offers a more engaging, visceral driving experience. A mechanically operated cable boot and trunk is standard as well.
  • 9. With 355 bhp at 7200 rpm, the GT3 was the most powerful normally aspirated 911 ever offered to the public. Its torque rating was 273 lb-ft at 5000 rpm. For comparison, the regular 996 pumped out 296 bhp at 6800 rpm and 258 lb-ft at 4600 rpm
  • 10. No traction control system was employed, nor was the Porsche Stability Management system. The only driver aid featured was the Bosch M5.3 anti-lock brake software, which was re-tuned for the GT3 application.
  • 11. Transmission was through a reinforced clutch and mechanical limited-slip differential.
  • 12. At 1350kg, the GT3 weighed 40kg less than a standard 996 Carrera Coupe and 95kg less than a Carrera 4 Coupe. Top speed went from 171mph to 188mph. The 0-62mph time dropped from 5.2 seconds to 4.7 seconds.
  • 13. Significantly, the GT3 became the first production car to circulate the fabled Nürburgring in under eight minutes when Walter Rohrl recorded a lap of 7 minutes 56.33 seconds.”

I had one of these up until 2021, It was an amazing car to drive, very analog and the driver feel is incredible. Mine was a red one, but the white looks awesome too.

Love white cars. Might take a drive up from Miami to take a closer look.
