Finished in Black Metallic over Savanna Beige upholstery, this early 1999 Porsche 996 Carrera Coupe is powered by a 3.4-liter flat-six engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Factory options include a rear window wiper, colored Porsche-crested wheel caps, and a CD storage compartment. Benefiting from an LN Engineering IMS bearing replacement in September 2020, the car was acquired by the seller in July 2020 and has since been garage-stored and maintained with routine service. Showing approximately 72k miles on the odometer, this 996 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of South Carolina.

This Carrera Coupe is finished in Black Metallic and distinguished as an early 996 model by its yellow lower headlight lenses. Features include an electric sunroof, black brake calipers with white Porsche lettering, dual exhaust outlets, a speed-activated rear spoiler, and 17” 996 Twist wheels mounted with Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02 tires from 2022. Factory options consist of colored Porsche-crested wheel caps and a rear window wiper. Under current ownership, the car won two local PCA concours events, earning second place for Best Porsche in 2021 and a Top 10 ribbon out of more than 120 vehicles in 2025. Minor imperfections noted by the seller include a small dent below the passenger door handle, light road rash on the front bumper and rear bumper areas behind the tires, and an extremely shallow, hardly noticeable dent in the hood. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is appointed with Savanna Beige partial leather upholstery and features power seats, power windows, cruise control, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, a heated rear window, a Becker-Porsche CDR-210 radio, an optional CD storage compartment, and aftermarket Coco floor mats. The seller describes the interior as being in excellent condition aside from some discoloration on the steering wheel. All gauges and electronics are reported to function properly, although the key fob does not remotely unlock the doors, the frunk light works intermittently, an HVAC blend door foam issue is present, and the airbag warning light is illuminated.

Power is delivered by a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six engine factory-rated at 296 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Stopping power is provided by fixed 4-piston brakes with cross-drilled rotors at each corner. Modifications include an LN Engineering spin-on oil filter adapter, an LN Engineering magnetic oil drain plug, and an installed oil filter magnet. The seller notes that the starter intermittently “whines” at startup, occurring approximately half the time. Some oil residue is present on the back passenger side of the engine, presumably from a cam plug. Routine maintenance under the current ownership includes annual oil changes with LiquiMoly and Driven DT40, along with additional maintenance items detailed by the seller:

  • September 2020 (~56,000 miles) – IMS bearing, AOS, RMS, fuel filter, and brake system flush
  • Spring 2022 – Replaced airbag retaining frame spring
  • Spring 2022 – Replaced engine air filter
  • Spring 2022 – Replaced spark plugs
  • Spring 2022 – Replaced drive belt
  • Spring 2022 – Replaced battery “Y” cable
  • Summer 2022 – Replaced passenger-side window regulator
  • April 2023 (~65,500 miles) – Installed new tires

This sale will include a clean title and a collection of service records.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for your interest in my ‘early build’ 996. These early builds are truly special cars- if you know, you know! This one has a build date of April 1998. I've owned the car since 2020, and it has been a joy to have - always garage-kept. I purchased the car from a PCA member in July of 2020 and have owned it for 5 years now. I mostly used the car as a show-and-shine vehicle on weekends. I occasionally drove it to work or used it for errands, and it was primarily used around town. The car has also been a great vehicle for occasional trips to the beach or mountains.

  • History: The car's history is that it was purchased new in North Carolina and has remained in the Southeast USA for its entire life. According to my records, it appears I'm the fourth owner. The owner I purchased from and the prior owner to that were related (I believe nephew/uncle).
  • Cosmetics: The car appears to have all original paint and paint thickness readings all across the car are shown in the gallery. The paint is exceptional and extremely mirror-like and bright. There are some small pits in the paint on the front bumper, but there are no large scrapes or chips in the paint. There is one dent below the passenger door handle that is shown in the gallery. There is a very, very shallow crease about 1 inch long in the hood that is almost impossible to see, much less photograph, but it is there. In addition, the car is in mechanical original condition with no modifications done, with the exception of an LN engineering spin-on oil filter adapter installed. I have swapped the floor mats to beautiful Coco brand mats in black/tan and also have the original all tan Porsche mats included with the vehicle. All glass is original and has the SEKURIT stamp.
  • Maintenance: I liked to do a lot of the regular maintenance myself on the car, such as oil changes, swapping a window regulator, and a 60K service, which included installing new spark plugs. I generally always used Pelican Parts or LN Engineering for my parts procurement and used OEM parts where it made sense. Oil changes were done yearly, and I kept "self-service" records to keep track of what I did to the car. Photos of those documents are in the gallery. I generally drove between 2500 and 3000 miles per year. A few years ago, I switched to Driven DT40 oil as recommended by many in the 996 community, LN engineering, and Jake Raby. Prior to that, I used Liquimoly brand oil. It appears that Liquimoly oil was the choice used in previous ownership to mine, based on records.
  • IMS bearing: The car had the IMS bearing replaced with the LN Engineering retrofit dual row bearing in September of 2020, and I have the receipt to show that work. In addition, I also registered the bearing with LN Engineering and have the two stickers installed with the bearing number- one on the driver door jamb and one under the engine lid. Photos are in the gallery. To register your IMS retrofit, you have to send your old bearing back to LN for inspection. It was in perfect condition when it came out of the car at approximately 56k miles.
  • Early build: One thing that makes this 996 stand apart from others is that this one is an "early build". The manufacture date is 04/98 and is marked by the unique amber lenses (the true "fried egg" lenses) on the front and back of the car. The later 1999 model 996s had all clear headlamps and taillamps. With the 1999 year model, you get legacy 911 cable throttle, manual actuation frunk and engine lid latches, no "nannies" (there is absolutely no traction control, PSM/PASM, or any other driving assist other than ABS on these cars. They stand out as a truly analog old-school driver’s car among the other 996 models. Early build cars are determined to be 3,649 units total and were hand assembled in sequence with the outgoing 993 air-cooled cars. They also have the legacy 4-spoke 993 steering wheel as standard. The interior of the car is special on the 1999 cars with the "buffalo hyde" dash and "granite" plastics, which are more durable and unique to 1999 only. The legacy 993 model headliner is also used- lightweight and simple.

When I originally sought a 911, I was interested specifically in a 1999 for the reasons above. The "early build" was on my radar, but I did not realize how much that would mean to me until after I learned more about it and owned the car for a little while. The car will be dearly missed and is absolutely beautiful and unique. I wish I did not have to sell, but it's time to let it go to pay down on a new car I have already purchased. The car has always been garage-kept and pampered. I'm a hobby detailer and loved keeping this car looking its best. The paint is beautiful, mirror-like, and not coated with a PPF or ceramic coating - what you see is what this car really looks like. It’s stunning and I will dearly miss it. The Savanna beige interior really complements the black metallic paint wonderfully due to the bronze undertone in the paint. I tried to capture that in the gallery, but the pictures don’t even do it justice. It’s a beautiful car inside and out, all original and a great entry point into classic 911 ownership.”

@golfmanLk the car is in Columbia SC, thanks!

@Segura996 the car has never not started for me after I replaced the battery in 2022. I was chasing a slow start issue and replaced the battery “Y” cable in that process. Turns out a new battery was all it needed but the car got both. Car starts every time. If leaving parked for a couple/few weeks a battery tender is good to leave on it, but that’s true for all 996s from my understanding.

If I recall correctly the whining sound is a slow to retract starter gear, and is more of an annoying sound than anything. Thanks!

Where in SC? I’m in CHS and would love to see it…

  • Segura996 (registered bidder) 1 hour, 32 minutesago

Thanks - what about the starter “whining” issue? Will the car start all the time? Was this item on your future maintenance list as well?

Perhaps it is something to do “while you are there” and replace coolant tank, water pump, thermostat…

@Segura996 I assume as well, however I’ve actually never tried to swap batteries to check it. I manually locked the doors under my ownership and didn't trouble shoot this issue. The doors have full locking functionality and I took a video to show it. Link is below.

As for the frunk light I unfortunately am not sure there also as I’ve not spent time to investigate it. Sorry I can not be more help here.

Here is the link to the door lock functionality video:

@Claymra reading through the description, I see that both key fobs aren’t working. I would assume this isn’t a simple battery swap. Do you know if both key fobs have to be reprogrammed or need to be replaced?

Also, you mentioned that the trunk light doesn’t work all the time - have you diagnosed the problem? Just checking if you are aware of any electrical issues going on through the vehicle that would trigger not only this issue but also the airbag light on the dashboard?

    Thanks!

@4Blueice I have not observed oil burn. No soot observed on or in tail pipe tips. I have not done a bore scope and don’t have any record of a previous owner doing it either.

@Segura996 from my research it’s somewhat common to 996 models and generally relates to a seat belt buckle fault code. I had it reset when I acquired the car, but it came back on again shortly after and I just lived with it. I believe a common fix is a seat belt buckle/wire harness replacement, but I’m not an expert here. I can say the car has NOT been wrecked or had an airbag deployment.

  • Segura996 (registered bidder) 2 days, 22 hoursago

@Claymra do you have any idea as the reason why the airbag light is on? I see there was some airbag repair performed in the past. Thanks

Good afternoon! Thanks in advance for your interest in my beautiful early build 996. I'm here to answer any questions about the car the best I can.

Here are some key points about the car:
    -Early build 04/98 production date
-IMS done with LN retrofit dual row bearing in Sept 2020 and registered with LN Engineering
-New Continential tires at approx 65K miles (Car has 72K now) and they look almost new
-Oil changed yearly with, in my opinion, the best on the market for these cars: Driven DT40
-Cosmetically in excellent shape with only a few flaws
-Engine pulls hard and smooth and is not modified. Transmission shifts beautifully. Be sure to check out the driving video.

Not to be redundant with a lot of this info in the auction description, but for those curious about what sets apart these early build cars you can read a little about there here:
