Built by Vintage Speedsters of Hawaiian Gardens, California, in 1998, this 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder replica is powered by a 2.2-liter Type 1 flat-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle. It features dual Weber 44 IDF carburetors, disc brakes, adjustable rear coilovers, wide-five Vintage 190 wheels, and red bucket seats. The car was purchased by the seller about two years ago and underwent extensive service over the last year including a new shifter, fuse panel, fuel pump, a rebuilt starter, and more. This 550 Spyder replica is now being offered for auction out of Texas.
Finished in silver with contrasting red fender stripes, the handcrafted fiberglass bodywork is mounted to a tubular-frame chassis. It features a clamshell rear lid with leather straps, dual engine grilles, a center-mounted tailpipe, a driver’s side mirror, a polished hood-mounted fuel cap, Spyder badging, and Karosserie Wendler Reutlingen fender emblems. The car rides on polished 15” Vintage 190 wheels with wide-five lug patterns and Laufenn G Fit all-season tires mounted about 4 years ago. Some paint chips are noted around the exterior and imperfections can be seen where the removable driver’s headrest fairing mounts. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cockpit is lined with dark grey carpeting and features a pair of red vinyl fixed-back bucket seats with matching rear padding. Accessories include lap belts, an ivory three-spoke bajo-style, an ivory gear knob, analog gauges with green markings, and a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror. The seller indicates the shifter, linkage, and cables were recently replaced with new parts from Vintage Motorcars. Small tears are also noted on the tops of each seat cover.
Power comes from a rebuilt 2.2-liter Volkswagen Type 1 flat-four engine featuring dual Weber 44 IDF carburetors. The rear wheels are driven through a 4-speed manual transaxle, adjustable coilovers are fitted at the rear, and disc brakes provide stopping power at each corner. Within the past 12 months, the car has been serviced with a rebuilt starter, a new starter solenoid, a new fuel pump, a clamshell prop rod, a fender clip, and an auxiliary oil cooler with new upper oil lines. The seller notes the engine runs strong, although some oil leaks are present.
This sale will include a black tonneau cover, a padded driver’s headrest fairing, windshield wipers, and a clean title for a 1955 Porsche Spyder.
The seller would like you to know: “I’m only selling this car because we moved into a new home with 1 less garage space than we had previously. During my ownership, I took care of all regular maintenance plus needed upgrades, such as the new shifter and cable shift system. I prefer my cars to remain as close to “stock” as possible. This car is not a garage queen…I drive all my cars and enjoy them on Texas Hill Country roads, so there are some paint chips present. Mechanically the car is sound. Car runs great and needs nothing but the next owner to enjoy it.”

@Craysparks it could have been me…,
Nice car, good buy, good seller
Ughhhh
I was distracted by my wife yelling at me about buying a house!
Sold for $30,250
Well done, swooping in in the final 2 minutes!
Bid in the amount of $30,250
All quiet in the final 5 minutes.
Car has a clean Texas title showing it as a 1955 Porsche Spyder. It was titled that way when I bought the car
@Craysparks yes in California
If the title indicates a1975 and older year make and model you are exempt of emission test
My car was registered as a 2011 year so they had to issue the smog exempt certificate
On my title it says the year of manufacture 2011
So if your car is registered as a 1975 and older car it would be easy to register in California
@VaheA yes, I don’t have any emission issues to deal with in Texas. This car is exempt here anyway just due to its age.
@Craysparks I have the same experience
Sometimes I get a bit wary of the power to weigh ratio since this Car has 180hp and it weights about 1500lbs.
It is just a blast to drive
Mine also has the California smog exempt certificate so I never have to worry about passing smog
The car is exempt from emission test for the life of the vehicle.

I had the car at a local car show once and snapped a neat photo of a woman turning to look at the car while she walked by. I will find it and post it here in a bit.
@VaheA Cool! I’ve really enjoyed this car. It gets tons of attention wherever I drive, even at gas stations just to fill it up. People will hang out their own car windows driving by to video the car. I even had a woman yell at me “love your car” through a rolled down window while she and her husband drove by in the lane next to me. Always get thumbs up from people. It’s amazing how much these cars grab people’s attention.
Beautiful car
Very well kept
I have one built by Vintage motor cars in early 2011
It has a monstrous 2.6 liter Fat performance Type 4 engine
Reserve is lifted! This car is going to sell.

We are within the final day of this auction. Just wanted to add that I have all receipts for the work done during my ownership the past two years. All work was performed by two independent Porsche repair shops in the Central Texas area. Good luck to all bidders!

Any chance we can get a driving video for this fella?

Noted. I will get that corrected. Thanks!
Correction, this 550 being built in 1998 would have been built by Vintage Speedsters. Vintage Motorcars was started in 2019 at the same facility. Beautiful Spyder, having owned 2, a Beck and a Carrera Coach Werks, (read, Thunder Ranch) looks to be well built and maintained.
