This first-generation 1998 Porsche 986 Boxster is finished in red with a black interior and equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and a mid-mounted flat-six engine. Converted to a Boxster Spec race car before the current owner's acquisition, it has undergone extensive modifications for track performance, including a lightweight racing interior, track-focused exterior components, a lightweight flywheel, an upgraded clutch, a Numeric billet shifter, Pagid yellow brake pads, a modified exhaust, and much more. With approximately 121k miles on the odometer, this track-ready Boxster is now available for auction from its seller in Virginia.

This 986 is finished in red with a matching hardtop along with removable racing numbers and decals. Enhancements include tow straps, and mesh grille guards on the bumper air intakes. The rear wing has also been modified to stay fixed in the extended position. The car is equipped with factory 17” twist wheels painted black and fitted with Toyo R888R tires, mounted in May 2024 and used for two track weekends. The seller notes minor road wear and a small 6-inch crack in the windscreen.

Inside, the cabin has been transformed into a lightweight racing cockpit. It features Sparco Evo L QRT racing seats for both the driver and passenger, purchased in 2022, along with Sparco Martini FIA Hans Endurance harnesses on both sides, also bought new in 2022. The interior includes a Momo Mod. 88 steering wheel, 350mm in diameter, wrapped in black suede with a removable hub, and a Numeric billet shifter paired with an aluminum shifter riser. Aluminum sheet floorboards with non-skid tape have been installed, and a full cage with door bars built by Piper Motorsport provides added safety. Additionally, the door panels have been removed, and the handles have been modified to cable pull types. The original dashboard is retained, though the outboard AC vents are non-functional due to the roll cage intrusion. The harnesses are valid until 2026 and 2027. The seller reports that all gauges are operational, although the steering column stalk for cruise control is bent, and the cruise control is not functional. Additionally, the door lock button on the dashboard is inoperative. Despite these issues, the AC blows cold, the heat blows hot, and the windshield defroster functions correctly.

Mounted behind the driver is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-six engine rated at 201 HP and 181 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are through a desirable 5-speed manual transmission. The vehicle has been enhanced with a lightweight flywheel and a Sachs performance clutch, both installed in 2022. The modified exhaust, also fitted in 2022, includes removed catalytic converters and Honda S2000 resonators. It also boasts a Numeric billet shifter, an aluminum shifter riser, and aluminum sheet floorboards with non-skid tape. Additional upgrades include an electrical cut-off switch, slotted rotors, and Pagid yellow racing pads. Recent maintenance includes a new water pump, thermostat, and coolant hoses. Additionally, a new battery was installed in early 2024.

This sale will include a branded title and an extra set of Boxster wheels.

The seller would like you to know: "Hello, everyone. This is my first auction, so I appreciate your patience. I'm offering my 1998 Spec Boxster track car. In 2021, a friend convinced me to try a Porsche Club HPDE event, which led me to purchase this dedicated track toy. My friend connected me with Aaron Elsner, the owner of Rennpart, a Porsche parts company, who was building this Spec Boxster. Aaron originally intended to rent it for track days but agreed to sell it to me. I've been the sole owner since February 2022. I share the car with my best friend, and we run in different groups. The car has been flawless since I bought it, with no significant mechanical issues. I've driven it at Summit Point, Watkins Glen, Pitt Raceway, and NJMP. It's a fantastic car for anyone learning to drive or who appreciates its cornering prowess. The car has never been raced and is only used for DE events, so I can't speak to its competitiveness in Spec Boxster racing. To my knowledge, the engine is stock, aside from the lightened flywheel that Aaron installed. And no, I'm not sure if the IMS has been replaced. I've maintained the car meticulously, changing the oil (Valvoline racing oil) and bleeding/flushing the brake system (Motul racing fluid) at the beginning and end of every summer. I typically run 3 or 4 DE events per year. The car is a joy to drive—very forgiving, supremely balanced, lightweight, with tons of grip. Almost every instructor I've run with has called it the perfect DE car. I'm selling it because I've purchased another track toy and don't have room for two. This car is "ready to go" for DE events and needs nothing, making it an easy entry into HPDE driving. The tires (Toyo Proxes R888R) and brakes (Pagid yellow) were replaced at the beginning of this season in May and have only seen two track weekends of use. The oil and brake fluid were also replaced in May. Thank you for your interest. I'll do my best to answer questions as they come in, and I apologize in advance if my responses are delayed."

@DrFranz - sorry, forgot your question about weight. Short answer, no I don't know the weight.

  • rossvesq (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@DrFranz I can't comment on whether it would pass a Club Race tech inspection since I have never taken it club racing. It has in fact passed multiple DE tech inspections (Potomac PCA, Reisentoter PCA, and others), apparently the crack is not considered significant. It is labeled a Spec Boxster because when I acquired it from Aaron Elsner he specifically said he was building it for SPB racing and my understanding is that while it may not be competitive in its current build state, there is nothing about it today that would disqualify it from entry. To be clear, when I purchased it I had no intention of ever entering it in a SPB event so I was not particularly concerned that it did not have many of the upgraded components that are allowed in SPB. It has served my purposes extremely well and hope that there are others out there who are looking for a fun track car (that might also serve as a good foundation for a fully kitted out SPB car). Cheer and thanks for your question.

Not likely to pass a Club Race Tech Inspection (or DE for that matter) with a cracked windshield.
Why is it labelled SPB if it's not actually a Spec Box?
Can you tell me the car's weight?

@Slingblademotor - across the top of the title it states "TOTAL LOSS CLAIM". It's a NC title. I believe different states may use different terms to describe salvage titles.

  • Slingblademotor (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

What is the branding of the title?

  • rossvesq (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Further to the comment of @Glickster, the car could easily be upgraded to be a competitive Spec Boxster racer with the right parts. Just saying.......

  • rossvesq (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@Glickster I think you summed it up nicely. Thank you.

  • Glickster 3 months, 3 weeksago

Not a PCA spec boxster club race car. It appears as advertised - a fun track day/DE car. This car would not be competitive in SPB as it sits. It would likely fit in PCA D stock class (not a lot of cars in D, so not much class competition) assuming the cage and safety gear are PCA
    legal.

  • rossvesq (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@blubusdrvr - I’m told Piper Motorsport in Sterling, VA built the cage. Compliant with what, please? I don’t know if it is compliant with a specific set of rules like, e.g., Spec Boxster. And yes, it’s a blast to drive. Just a fantastic track car.

  • Blubusdrvr (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

Who built the cage? Is it compliant? The drivers side bar looks a little low with the naked eye but could be the angle. Looks fun.

@bartda - actually no. We were very bad boys. We knowingly and intentionally took a spin on public roads with a non-registered non-street legal track car. Thankfully all of the cops were at the local Dunkin Donuts. :-)

  • bartda (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

Based on the video, the car is still street legal?

Hi everyone and thanks for checking out my listing. This is my first auction so I am excited and looking forward to answering any and all questions. On that note, I will be traveling during the auction but will be checking the comments as frequently as I can. Please accept my sincere apologies in advance for any delays in responding to questions. I will answer all questions but a response may be delayed. I simply ask for your patience and understanding. “Foxster” (come on, she’s red) has been incredibly reliable and is an absolute blast to drive on the track. Before Foxster I owned a 944 track car and Foxster was a significant step up in performance. For me she checked all the boxes – full cage and safety equipment, more power, better handling – you name it she has it and she’s been a wonderful ride. The description lists all of the modifications so I won’t belabor them here. Thanks again for checking her out, and I look forward to a successful auction.
