We are pleased to present this 1998 Porsche 993 Carrera S finished in Ocean Blue Metallic over a Classic Grey interior.  Perhaps the most sought-after 993 of all, the Carrera S features the wide body styling of the Turbo model along with a unique split-grille rear decklid and a naturally aspirated flat-six engine sending power to the rear wheels. This final-year 1998 example was custom ordered by its original owner through Porsche’s Exclusive program in a rarely seen color combination along with the Motor Sound Package, a limited-slip differential, 18” Turbo Technology wheels, the Sound System Package, and stainless-steel exhaust pipes.  It was acquired by the seller from its original owner in 2010 and is said to have always been serviced exclusively by the specialists at Perfect Power in Illinois.  Now with just over 27k miles showing on the odometer, this Carrera S is being offered for auction by its longtime second owner out of Illinois.

This 993 was ordered in rare Ocean Blue Metallic and features Exclusive oval stainless steel exhaust pipes.  The Carrera S is distinguished by its wide Turbo-derived bodywork and model-specific split-grille rear decklid.  The car is described to have been carefully looked after throughout its life and the seller notes only a few small chips on the front hood commensurate with normal road-going wear.  The finish is also reported to be entirely original, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report. This 993 rides on a set of factory-optioned 18” Turbo Technology lightweight hollow spoke wheels dressed in Pirelli tires showing date codes from 2002-2003.  The tires are recommended for replacement due to age.

Inside, this 993 features a specially ordered Classic Grey interior with factory 8-way power Comfort Seats, the Sound System Package, and an electric sunroof. The seller notes that the interior remains very well preserved with all gauges and accessories functioning properly.  Additional factory features include a Porsche Becker CR-210 radio, a 6-disc CD changer, and cruise control.  The 5-digit option codes at the bottom of the factory specifications label represent options from Porsche’s Exclusive Department.

The last of the air-cooled 911’s, this 1998 Carrera S is equipped with a 3.6L flat-six Varioram engine that sends as much as 282 HP to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.  The Carrera S shares its large Brembo brakes with the Turbo model, and this example also came factory optioned with the Motor Sound Package, Sport Brake Pads, and a limited-slip differential with Automatic Brake Differential (ABD). The seller notes that apart from one oil and filter service carried out under warranty by Porsche Exchange of Highland Park, this Carrera S has been serviced exclusively by the renowned air-cooled specialists at Perfect Power of Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Service records dating back as far as 1999 are provided for reference in the gallery as well as a recent Porsche Classic Technical Certificate from Napleton Westmont Porsche.

This sale will include a set of keys with remote fobs, the original owner's manuals, air compressor, toolkit, spare tire, service records, a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate, and a clean title. This beautifully preserved final year 993 Carrera S is a must-have for any avid Porsche Collector. Showcasing an exceptionally rare color combination and a generous array of factory options, this low mileage Carrera S is not to be overlooked.

@stuttgartsteve I understand what those two codes are, and that they indicate a Special Wishes car that is ordered through the Exclusive Manufacture program, but, in my limited experience, those codes are ‘triggered’ by an exclusive option code somewhere else on the options list. That is often a PTS color, deviated stitching, leather options, carbon items, etc. and usually begin with an ‘X’. Here, the only X option is for the wide oval tips, and I do not believe that Ocean Blue Metallic or Classic Grey required Special Wishes to get involved, so I still believe that those tips being on there as an X option is what triggered the other codes. The exterior paint on a MY98 car could also have done it, but given that it was actually manufactured in ‘97, that is not my fist guess. I would love some additional information or suggestions, if you know more about the program, as what I’m suggesting here fits with everything that I have learned reading about those two codes on the web and talking with Porsche salespeople. Great result for a stock C2S, I don’t know that I will ever sell mine, though it certainly isn’t stock anymore, and is far better for it.

@jmorin agreed I installed Bilstein's on my 993 C4S and yes it was brakes and wheels not suspension.

I have a similar spec “S” car, from the final air-cooled year, but with a few thousand fewer miles and the “Vesuvio Package” by the Exclusive Department. I can say that it will be worth every penny of the $200K+ it should really reach for the privilege of owning something as special as these cars are. You will never regret overpaying for it (like I did back then) but you will definitely regret “nickle-and-diming” here and missing out. It’s not often someone wants to part with theirs. I certainly don’t! Congratulations to the winner in advance.

@clearcutworld @clearcutworld. With all due respect, X code options are not the issue, look at photo 119, note codes 09991 and 16981… Google those Porsche codes or call your local Porsche expert to discuss. Cheers!

This is a beautiful car, but I don't really get why it is listed as a Sonderwunsche build? I believe that Ocean Blue Metallic was a standard exterior color for 1997 cars (the '98 cars were basically '97 builds), and the same with Classic Grey for the interior. The only "X" option is for the stainless oval tips, and I am not convinced that a vehicle would actually be assembled on a different line or given any special designation for bolt-on tips alone. Don't get me wrong, this is a gorgeous car, but the build is not out of the normal range for a C2S. The new owner should be looking at new tires, and inspecting bushings, especially for the front lower control arms and steering rack, plus other components that age out, regardless of milage. I own a low-milage '98 C2S, and making some of those changes totally transformed the handling. Let's see what's left on this one, I like almost everything about it.

  • jmorin (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

@antoniodelgad68 Yes and no on the suspension. The 993TT came standard with the M030 Sport suspension. This was optional on other 993s, but does not seem to be spec'ed on this one. 993TTs also came with unique anti-roll bars. These bars bolt up nicely to the lighter C2S and really help tune out the OEM understeer.

All sort of moot, because none of the OEM suspensions were that great, especially the base versions. Most enthusiasts replace them with Bilstein PSS10, HD, or some other quality coilovers.

Perfect Power has maintained my 3 air-cooled Porsches for 34 years- there’s no better service in the Midwest. I’ve seen this car at Chicago PCA events and the photos don’t begin to show the spectacular paint. There were very few 1998 Carrera Ss built like this car from the Sonderwunsch Programme/Special Wishes Department. Somebody is going to get an incredible Porsche… it will be very expensive but totally worth it.

  • antoniodelgad68 (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Great car good luck to seller and buyer. Remember the 993 S did not have the Turbo's brakes nor suspension, just noting that. Otherwise its a beautiful and rare air cooled car. TD

@Sagarsaha I have a 98 with 53K miles, maintained like the Seller (no snow, only rain by bad luck). I'd say the undercarriage looks exactly as it should on a street-driven, 23 year old car. A lot of the "dark" areas shown are just the factory cosmoline that is put on to protect the underside. Many of the more OCD among us spend countless hours under the car removing that stuff. It does make it look pretty, but to be honest its better for the car to leave it on.

@Sagarsaha Please note my third post in this comments section: “The car has never been driven in the snow or tasted salt and was only caught in rain showers on two occasions. The car’s entire life has been stored in climate-controlled garages.”

The technician who completed the Porsche Classic Technical Certificate found the entire vehicle to be in “excellent condition” and this includes the undercarriage. Please feel free to contact the Classics Service Manager at Napleton Westmont Porsche to discuss your observation.

I’m not sure what your experience is with inspecting undercarriages but photos 176, 180, 185, 186, 187 document excellent condition. The same level of care that safeguarded the excellent exterior and interior condition was extended to the undercarriage.

Once again, this car was never driven in the snow. This car was stored all winter/every winter in a heated garage. This car has never tasted salt; the car was never driven until the roads were completely washed free of all salt from spring rain showers.

  • Sagarsaha (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

    Hello
Beautiful car. Compared to the overall exterior condition I find the undercarriage pictures a little rough. Considering the car spent most if not all of its life up north would salt and snow contributed to the undercarriage condition?

@PMeister I spoke with the Classics Service Manager at Napleton Porsche where the PCTC was performed, here are the reasons for the fails:

    Belts: age

Suspension: age of front sway bar bushings (rubber)

Airbag: more than 4 years since last maintenance check (5/16/2017)

If you need more information please contact Matt, the Classics Service Manager, at Napleton Westmont Porsche.

  • molarman1 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@PMeister The belts need replacement as they are the original belts from the factory.
I’m not sure on the suspension; I assume it’s the shocks as they are factory original.
The commentary on page of PCTC photo 220 (“There is no need for action on the suspension, it’s in excellent condition.”) conflicts with the other page of the PCTC in photo 221.
The airbag needs an inspection as it has been more than 4 years since last inspection.

The PCTC technician was not present when I picked up the PCTC. I’ll call the PCTC technician tomorrow to clarify the above.

  • PMeister (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Can you comment on the causes for the fails on the technical certificate?

Belts: too old or maybe visible damage?
Suspension: dampers worn, weak coil overs, bushes dry/cracked or something else?
Airbag: simply being older than 14 years?

    A little more info...
I do not have the original window sticker. The original owner lost the window sticker in a household move.
The car is completely Stuttgart stock and original; nothing has been aftermarket replaced, altered, customized. The car features all of the original floor mats and they are in perfect condition.
The car has never been raced, tracked, or participated in any DE.
The car has never been driven in the snow or tasted salt and was only caught in rain showers on two occasions.
The car’s entire life has been stored in climate-controlled garages.
AC blows cold (see video, 88 degree/76% humidity ambient day, AC blowing 47 degrees).

Obviously, the tires need replacement. I have purposely not replaced the tires because I know how passionate people are about their tire choice and I didn’t want to put on a set of Michelins (I’m a Michelin fan) and have the new owner be a diehard Pirelli fan and trash the Michelins. Despite the tires’ age the car drives and handles perfectly as the videos document. The car has spent the majority of the last few years as a garage queen and new tires would be wasted as they would quickly develop flat spots.

It’s sad for me to part with this car but I realize the importance and collectability of the last 993 air cooled Porsches (especially Ocean Blue Metallic) and it’s time for someone else to appreciate it. The only activity I’ve done with this car the last few years (prior to COVID-19) has been attending local PCA events and car shows.

    Greetings PCAR!
I am the seller of this outstanding Porsche and happy to answer any questions. If you’re anywhere near the Chicago area the car is available for inspection where you can go over it in unlimited detail- you must see this car in person to appreciate the paint. Please contact me to schedule a viewing.

In the interest of full transparency, the CarFax report is not completely accurate: I am the second owner. I purchased the car in 2010 from the original owner who is my best friend. My friend purchased the car new in December 1997 from the dealer in Austin, TX, where he placed the special order. (Note the three 5-digit exclusive option codes on the build sticker.) He took delivery while living in Missouri and then moved to Illinois where the car was registered in December 1999. We are both longtime PCA members. The provenance on this car is impeccable. In fact, only three (3) people have driven this car: the original owner, myself, and Sol (owner/mechanic at Perfect Power). People talk about “buy the seller, not the car” well, you can buy the seller AND the mechanic on this car and have complete trust, confidence, and satisfaction. This car has been pampered and loved tenderly its entire life. The interior is perfectly preserved and like factory new.

The Ocean Blue Metallic exterior paint is a very rare color from the 993 production line but Ocean Blue Metallic with a Classic Grey interior is extremely rare. At a Porsche Parade Concours d’Elegance event I was told by a Hemmings official that he only knew of five (counting my car) 1998 993 Carrera Ss in the USA with factory painted Ocean Blue Metallic with Classic Grey interior. I tried to verify this with PCNA and received this reply:

“Porsche Cars North America is not in a position to provide production details or figures, as it is considered proprietary information. While we cannot confirm the exclusivity of the interior and exterior color combination, I can confirm that this vehicle was produced with a Porsche Exclusive deviation option.”

This is the first 1998 993 Carrera S in Ocean Blue Metallic with Classic Grey interior that PCAR has listed for auction. The car has never been in an accident. The paint is completely original. The stone guards are original.
