The fifth and final generation Honda Prelude was launched in 1996 featuring a more angular body design, a longer wheelbase, and a 2.2-liter DOHC V-Tec inline-four engine. Finished in Milano Red over a Black interior, this 1998 example is a Type SH or “Super Handling” version featuring an Active Torque Transfer System. It is also equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, double-wishbone suspension, variable assist power steering, keyless entry, air conditioning, a power moonroof, and a 6-speaker Honda Acoustic Feedback Sound System. It was purchased new from Richmond Honda in Virginia and has remained locally with its original owner with its original owner up until the selling dealer’s acquisition. Accompanied by the original window sticker, books, and an invoices for a timing belt service, this well-preserved Honda Prelude is now being offered for auction with approximately 51k miles showing on the odometer.
The two-door notchback body style of the fifth-generation Prelude is more angular than its predecessor and is 3.2” longer overall. This example is finished in Milano Red and features a rear spoiler, mud guards, polished dual exhaust tips, body-colored power door mirrors, heat-tinted glass, a power tilt/slide moonroof, and 16” five-spoke alloy wheels. The tires show production date codes from 2004 and are said to have been mounted less than 1k miles ago. The seller adds that the paint remains in excellent overall condition and the rear bumper cover was previously refinished with supporting documentation. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The Black interior features cloth trimmed bucket seats with patterned centers, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, and a leather gear knob and shift boot. Accessories include Honda-branded floor mats, power windows and door locks, crise control, air conditioning, a center console storage compartment, and an AM/FM/CD stereo with a 6-speaker Honda Acoustic Feedback sound system.
Rated at 195 HP and 156 lb.-ft of torque, the 2.2-liter H22A4 inline-four features VTEC variable valve timing and sends power to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. Performance features include disc brakes with ABS, variable assist power-steering double wishbone independent suspension, and the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS) which helps mitigate understeer. The seller indicates a timing belt service was completed at 35k miles and a thick binder of maintenance records accompanies the sale.
This sale will include a window sticker, owner’s manuals, a spare tire, a toolkit, an air pump, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “This is as near perfect as it gets for a 26-year-old vehicle. Meticulously serviced and cared for by original owner until our purchase and always garaged. Runs and drives wonderfully. No apologies for this Prelude.”

as we’re in the last hour of the auction on this time capsule Prelude I would like to thank all that viewed, commented and bid on auction. Good luck to everyone as it wraps up and store us on your favorites since we have some other great cars coming to PCARMARKET soon. Thanks Bill

Hoping that is the case since I don’t see any “mark up “ left. Remember that I stand behind my sales and will be replacing the timing belt, water pump and tires. Not off brand tires either. Most people know the cost of that and realize that the bargain you may believe to have gotten from a private seller often comes with hidden expenditures. I do appreciate what you’re saying which is why I put it out to auction so everyone has the same opportunity and can decide what they want to pay thru the bidding process. Thanks again
Here’s to hoping an enthusiast wins the car, so it will actually be smiles per mile. And not another dealer marking it up again…
I’m pretty sure that the new owner is going to be happy with guys like me that have been in my industry for 40 years now. Since I find and offer unique and quality products that they are not likely to find due to my contacts and experience. Just being able to search online or on Saturdays instead of 7 days a week in the “Trenches “ makes it tougher. That being said my vocation is a working vacation that I really enjoy. And providing smiles with miles to the next owner. Thanks
Let’s watch this car go from dealer to dealer and get marked up multiple times. And then pander to the enthusiasts like we’re doing them a favor. I’m kidding. Good luck to all bidders!
I see the enthusiasts have to outbid the car flippers/dealers here also. Same story as BAT and C&B. This is just another place to source inventory I guess.
It is in the picture with the service records and owners manual. So yes it is included. Thanks
do you have the window sticker by chance?
Bid in the amount of $8,250
I checked the service records for the timing belt service and it was over ten years ago. The inspection of it showed it to still be in great condition. However to have this be worry free for the next owner we will do the service again for piece of mind. Bid with confidence that it will be delivered ready to drive and enjoy. Thanks Bill
Good afternoon, I will pull out the service records tomorrow and check on the date of the timing belt service. Also I will have our Honda tech do an inspection of it. And thank you ekirks13 for sharing your story.
As an owner of a 1998 Prelude Type SH with 178k miles I can attest this is an incredibly undervalued vehicle in terms of smiles per miles! Mine is stock and drives amazingly- I can’t even imagine how great this one must be to take through some corners and feel that V-TEC kick in. Beautiful car that will make someone very happy to own, drive and show! Prices on these are starting to rise with the recent announcement of a new Prelude coming out. Good luck with the sale!
it’s indicated that the timing belt was changed at 35,000 miles, do you know the date of that service? Honda recommends every 10 years regardless of mileage. Thanks
Bid in the amount of $8,000
I will be adding underside pictures today. Bill
Good morning, the statement on the is incorrect. However I am going to put new tires on before it sells so let’s take that off the table. I hope that takes care of further concerns. It will also have a current Virginia state safety inspection. Thanks
I’m confused by the statement, ‘tires with 2004 date codes mounted less than 1K miles ago’. Why install tires that old?
