As part of the second generation of BMW’s high-performance BMW M3, the E36 model was introduced in 1994 and received a facelift in 1995, along with a new 3.2-liter S52 engine. This 1998 BMW E36 M3 Coupe is finished in Cosmos Black Metallic over Black Nappa leather upholstery and features a 5-speed manual transmission paired with its S52 inline-six engine. It has also been modified with Porsche 993 Turbo “Big Red” front brakes, SSR Type 3 wheels, a B&B tri-flow exhaust system, H&R coilovers, and more. Upon the seller’s acquisition here on PCARMARKET in April 2023, this example has been stored inside a climate-controlled environment and driven sparingly. Showing approximately 37k miles on the odometer, this M3 is now being offered for auction out of Illinois.
The E36 M3 builds upon the contemporary 3-Series with a more aggressive front air dam, rear diffuser, flared rocker panels, M-style aerodynamic mirrors, M3-branded body moldings, and a polished dual-tipped exhaust outlet. Finished in Cosmos Black Metallic, this Coupe has been upgraded with Porsche 993 Turbo “Big Red” front brakes and SSR Type 3 racing wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires dated from 2020. Originally used for HPDE events and BMW CCA track instruction under its first owner, the car later received replacement headlights. The seller notes the body retains its original panels and paint, though rock chipping is present across the front end, including the bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors, pillars, and roofline. The fenders have also been slightly rolled. A clean CARFAX report and detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin is trimmed in Grey Nappa leather with a contrasting dashboard and center console. Standard features include power-adjustable and heated Sport Seats with M-striping, dual-zone automatic climate control, an onboard computer, a Harmon-Kardon audio system, M3-logo door sills, and power windows, door locks, and mirrors. A MOMO racing steering wheel has been fitted along with a UUC weighted shift knob, a full roll cage, and a fire extinguisher. Some signs of wear are noted throughout the interior.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter S52 DOHC inline six-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. The S52 was factory-rated at 240 HP and sends power to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Modifications include a B&B tri-flow exhaust system, an M50 manifold borrowed from a 1995 M3, H&R coilovers, and Porsche 993 Turbo "Big Red" front brakes. Under prior ownership, service included replacement of the radiator, water pump, cooling system hoses, alternator, and battery, along with an oil change, brake fluid flush, and differential fluid service.

Good morning! I would have no qualms about driving to the coast, no. It is a strong running E36 and is an absolute hoot to drive. The Michelin tires all have day codes of 3620, 3720 or 3820 and it has been stored inside in an air conditioned garage so they are very pliable.
Are you able to share the date codes on the tires? Would you have any qualms driving it to the coast?

For concerns of track abuse, Is there engine compression results available? It should be an easy test to run, but Ive seen a lot of variations and low mileage doesn’t always correlate to engine health especially

1. I have added some additional photos of the way the cage is attached to the car. I could easily access the 4 rear mounting points and included photos of them, but the front section of the cage goes into the carpet which is cut too tightly to get a good view of where it attaches to the floor. It would unfortunately take quite a bit of disassembly to access those points for a better view.
2. 1998 M3s would have came with an airbag from the factory, but this one has been removed in its current configuration. We did not receive the factory steering wheel or air bag when we bought this car previously here on Pcar.

Beautiful car -- I still miss my 96. Few questions:
1. Is the cage bolted or welded into the car? I can't see any of the mounting plates in the pictures -- can you post pics of every point the cage is integrated into the car?
2. Did the car come stock with an airbag in the steering wheel, and if so, do you have the original available? Don't know if I'll be able to get a safety inspection without that.
