The 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 NAS (North American Specification) is a rare and coveted off-road vehicle known for its rugged design and reliable performance. This 1997 example is one of approximately 2,800 North American-specific models imported that year. It is finished in Alpine White over a Slate Gray vinyl interior. It is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system with a dual-range transfer case. Other features include an ARB front bumper paired with a brush guard and winch, a pop-up glass sunroof, a roof basket, overhead auxiliary lights, a roll cage, rear jump seats, an air conditioning system, and more. Showing approximately 114k miles on the odometer, this Defender 90 NAS is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut.

The Defender 90 features a boxy, utilitarian design with an aluminum body for durability, and all NAS models originally came with a factory roll cage. This example is finished in Alpine White and features an ARB front bumper paired with a brush guard and winch, overhead auxiliary lights, black wheel arch flares, a safari roof basket, sidestep bars, taillight protection, a tubular rear bumper, a receiver hitch, and a rear ladder. It rides on 16” five-spoke wheels wrapped in Nitto Dura Grappler Highway Terrain tires, and a matching spare is mounted in the rear swing-out door. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The interior is appointed with bucket seats upholstered in Slate Gray vinyl, complemented by color-coordinated dashboard and door panels. The rear section showcases four inward-facing jump seats upholstered in matching gray vinyl with cloth centers. It is equipped with a pop-up glass sunroof, air conditioning, a locking center console, and a Sony head unit.

Power comes from a 4.0-liter V8 engine, which delivers a factory-rated 182 HP and 233 lb.-ft of torque to all four wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Power-assisted disc brakes facilitate stopping power to all four corners. The seller notes the fuel pump was replaced in preparation for the sale.

This sale will include the owner’s manuals and a clean title.

    @ionyota no problem. I’ll get shots of the footwell.

    Pictures were taken in front of my storage barn during the previous auction on another platform. It’s done less than 50~ miles since that photo set and has been stored indoors.

    Thanks! Stay tuned.

    Pictures of the footwell metal is necessary to see.

    Most pictures show snow…when were they taken?

    The bulkhead is the firewall. This thread keeps making its own gravy.

    @jctsc there’s a little bit of staining from mildew on the headliner correct. I’ve wiped/disinfected the material and it hasn’t gotten any worse, but those spots do remain.

    I’ll snap some pictures of the bottoms of the doors. The fasteners on the hinges are a bit rusty but otherwise the truck looks great for a northeast vehicle. There are underside photos in the gallery which shows the frame in great shape.

    Lastly, happy to show the bulkhead but have not heard that term used. What would you like to see?

    Thanks!

  • jctsc (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

    Is that mold on the headliner? Also, I noticed a significant amount of rust stains weeping out of the door thresholds as well as other spots so curious if the bulkhead has rust?

    @PhantomU When I had Land Rovers, we used those cables to help push away overhanging limbs from the windscreen when you are offroading on narrow trails. It did help some, though honestly I think most people put them there just for some additional item that's "rugged-looking" to complete the look.

    @ionyota gotcha,

    The NAS a bit too expensive for you?

    We have some RHD 5-speeds that are more budget friendly.

  • ionyota (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

    Your response was insinuated nothing of the sort.

    I’m always in the market, for 5 speeds

  • EnthusiasticEnthusiast (seller) 3 monthsago

    @ionyota No problem.

    If you go to our YouTube channel and do some digging, you’ll see just how often we deal with defenders. I don’t claim to be an expert and am always learning but I do know a thing or two. Apologies for not using the specific term “limb risers” although my explanation did insinuate that.

    Personally I’m more of a sports car guy, I’ve had three Porsches in the past two years, two of which were 911s. That being said I have a huge enthusiasm for defenders, I’ve taken them off-road, on road trips, driven Santana’s, both 300TDI and NAS D90s, 110s, disco’s, LR4’s, and a modern 110.

    Appreciate it, are you in the market?

    Thanks.

    @pcarmarket, how is asking the seller to describe their history and experience with Defenders trying to discredit the seller? It seems quite germane to the auction of a Defender.

  • PCARMARKET 3 monthsago

    @ionyota your comments are being removed due to their nature. The comment section is not to berate or discredit the seller rather it is here to provide factual exchanges about the vehicle on auction. We kindly ask you send the seller a private message and have a conversation with him directly. Please be mindful as this could cause your account messaging privileges to be suspended. Thank you for your cooperation.

    @PhantomU Just adjustable support cables to keep everything sturdy.

    This setup is fairly common on over-landing rigs. If you don’t plan on using the roof rack for anything heavy I’m sure you could do without them.

    They also prevent you from hitting the rack if you are going under anything that has short clearance.

    Thanks!

  • PhantomU 3 monthsago

    Why are there cables from roof rack to brush bar?

  • EnthusiasticEnthusiast (seller) 3 monthsago

    @jray it was!

    We were extremely close on that one, with winter upon us we are willing to be reasonable and hoping to reach a sale with this auction!

    Thanks

    This defender looks familiar. Was it on BAT earlier this year?
