The ultimate high-performance version of BMW’s flagship E31 8-Series, the 850CSi was developed by BMW Motorsport and equipped with a 5.6L V12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. One of just 1,510 examples produced in total, this 1997 850CSi comes finished in in Bright Red over Black Nappa partial leather upholstery. As a European-market example, it offers upgraded brakes and four-wheel steering with an active rear axle. Imported from Germany to the U.S. in 2002, this iconic 8-Series is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois while showing just over 34k miles on the odometer.

The first-generation 8-Series was designed using CAD modeling and features a unique pillarless window design. Compared to the standard E31, the 850CSi features revised front and rear valances and a lowered suspension. This example comes finished in Bright Red (314) and rides on aftermarket 17” BBS wheels dressed in General G-Max AS-05 tires. Factory equipment includes pop-up headlights with washers, M-design mirrors, and quad exhaust outlets. The seller believes the driver’s side door and fender to have been previously refinished. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, the cabin is upholstered in Black Nappa partial leather (N4SW) complemented with wood trim along the center console. Equipment includes power-adjustable and heated front bucket seats, individual rear seats, a leather-wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel, an M-branded shift knob. Amenities consist of an electric sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, an onboard computer, a BMW Professional cassette stereo, a trunk-mounted CD changer, and the Hi-Fi sound system. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.

The 850CSi is powered by an S70B56 5.6L V12 engine which was developed by BMW Motorsport and rated at 375 HP and 406 lb.-ft of torque. A version of the S70 engine was also utilized for the legendary McLaren F1 supercar. BMW Motorsport tuned the suspension of the CSi, specifying stronger wheel hubs, stiffer shocks, and a 10mm lowered ride height compared with a standard 850i. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential. European-market equipment includes upgraded brakes and four-wheel steering with an active rear axle.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This is truly a special car, especially being the 2nd to last one built!”

@lawyerpeetie - If you view the carfax provided in the photo gallery, it was registered on 8/8/2005. Federalization completed.

Here's a link for the photos taken in 2005 when JK Technologies had the car.

@LJames Perhaps I ma not of clear mind this morning, but I don't get from your comment if this car has completed Federalization at this point. Do you know? I am interested if this has already been done. Thanks for any insight. I would also love to see the photos you took.

I wrote the following below when it was on BAT back in Dec of '22:

This is truly a special car! Being the 2nd to last one built, it definitely intrigued me when I nearly bought it back in 2005. JK Technologies was the Federalizer that legalized this car for U.S. Roads. They did the federalization on my 1989 E30 M3 Cabrio which was completed in 2004.

They had some issues with the federalization because the US spec 850Csi’s were OBD 1 and this one was OBD II. It took several years and ALOT of money to complete. James Martin who was the gentleman importing did not complete the importing process with them as a result of the cost. JK then took a lien on the car and offered it to me to purchase.

I went and saw it. It was a nice car that needed work. They told me about the blown clutch they replaced. Cosmetically, there were scratched on the driver’s side front spoiler, rear deck lid, driver’s side rear quarter, and passenger side lower quarter. This is all confirmed by the paint meter readings that you seen in the gallery.

It seems that the cosmetic issues that caused me hesitate on this vehicle have been addressed. The mechanical side of the equation should have been sorted since there are nearly 10K of additional miles on it since I drove it.

This is definitely one that can be considered one that got away… But I am glad it did. I was not willing to purchase for nearly double the original asking price at that time.

To the winner of this auction, if you would like, please feel free to contact me and I can provide a collection of photos that I took of the car from 2005. Best of luck to the winner!
