This 840Ci is now being offered for auction by the seller out of Georgia showing just under 81k miles on the odometer.

Finished in Jet Black, this BMW is equipped with 18” style 37 M Parallel wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires from 2018 and 2019. Standard equipment includes pop-up headlights, fog lights, and black trim. The seller notes window tint has been applied along with a rear decklid spoiler. Some damage is also noted on the lower-left portion of the front spoiler as well as cracks in the paint of the front bumper and an area of worn paint on the roof. Additionally, the CARFAX notes minor damage to the side of the car in September of 2012. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, this E31 is upholstered in black leather and features heated and power-adjustable front seats with driver’s memory, a power-adjustable steering column, a power sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a CD stereo which has been refurbished. The seller also reports some cracks are visible in the wood trim on the center stack and center console, as well as wear on the top of the steering wheel. All gauges and accessories are said to be functional, although the turn signals do not automatically cancel after completing a turn.

The 840Ci is powered by a 4.4-liter M62B4444 V8 that produces up to 282 HP and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, sent to the rear wheels by way of a retrofitted 6-speed manual transmission that was installed in 2019. The seller reports service in 2023 included an oil change, refurbishment of the head unit and cam covers, replacement of the oxygen sensor, oil level sensor, thermostat, oil pan gasket, cam cover gaskets, spark plugs, and batteries. Additional service is said to include a repair to the OBD connector, parking brake, and recharging the air conditioning. An aftermarket catalytic converter has been installed along Magnaflow rear resonators.

This sale will include the owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and a clean title.

@Roundel1000 the ABS and TC should work, we have not tested it as the car has been safely driven.
Charging the AC will not resolve the current issue.

With the new transmission does the abs and traction control work properly? With a recharge, does the AC work?

@jeffnlexi the leak is still a known issue. You are correct, the transmission swap was done during our ownership. This vehicle was part of our private collection and not for sale for a few years, but we decided it is time to let it go to a new home.

  • jeffnlexi (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

@ merlinautogroup Am I correct in saying that the transmission swap was done while at Merlin? You have had this in inventory since June 2019? Any history would be appreciated.

  • jeffnlexi (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

@merlinautogroup What about my question on the Air Conditioning? It seems the most recent receipt says a leak is being chased.

  • merlinautogroup (seller) 12 monthsago

@jeffnlexi that is correct. They are not included

  • jeffnlexi (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

@merlinautogroup I assume since it is not listed that the original wheels and steering wheel are not with the sale?

  • merlinautogroup (seller) 12 monthsago

@Chamberlin I think you're correct, that would make the most sense with the correct coding

  • Chamberlin 12 monthsago

It's my opinion that the mileage discrepancy happened when they coded it for the Euro manual... as I explained below. 127,000 km = 78,914 miles, which is exactly commensurate with current mileage and when the conversion was made.

  • merlinautogroup (seller) 12 monthsago

@jeffnlexi We called the shop that installed the manual transmission and they said it was either just a filler number, or that was the mileage on the transmission that was put into the car

  • jeffnlexi (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

@merlinautogroup Any explanation as to why two of the receipts show the car with 127k miles?

It seems the A/C might be a bit of an issue. Was that problem resolved?

  • Chamberlin 12 monthsago

Hello Merlinauto - I watched the video, and I think it's coded correctly, as there are no auto-transmission indicators in the cluster. It's a somewhat difficult process to make the the car 'think' it's a Euro manual 840 (the only market where they sold 6 speed 840s), but still get it back to MPH once that's done. If you simply install the 6-speed transmission, clutch, reverse light, and driveshaft without re-coding, the car's ECU is still trying to talk to the auto-trans computer where there's no autobox present, and it's a mess.

If you code it as a Euro manual 840, that's great, but those programs are in KPH, so you have to jump through some more hoops to get it back to MPH... that is all!

  • merlinautogroup (seller) 12 monthsago

@chamberlin the transmission is a getrag 6 speed. This car is not a Euro car, so the odometer has always shown the correct MPH.
If this doesn't answer your question, will you please reiterate it so we can get you the answer you are looking for.

  • Chamberlin 12 monthsago

I assume a Getrag 420G 6-speed box is being used here, but was the correct 1418mm European 840 manual driveshaft acquired (unique length to all E31), or was the existing driveshaft modified? Also was the car properly coded as a Euro manual and then coded for MPH again?
