Debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 as BMW’s flagship grand touring sports car, the E31 8-Series represents an icon of BMW design with its pillarless windows, pop-up headlights, and a wind-tunnel-shaped wedge-like profile. This 1997 840ci represents the final year of production for the United States and was ordered in Arctic Silver Metallic over a Silver-Grey Nappa leather interior, equipped with a 4.4L V8 paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It was first titled in Virginia and spent time in Massachusetts before being located to Rhode Island in 2015. Options include a power sunroof, heated seats, and a trunk-mounted 6-CD changer. This 840ci is now being offered at auction by the seller based out of Rhode Island, showing just under 39,790 on the odometer.
The E31 8-Series was the first production vehicle to utilize computer-aided design (CAD) and the bodywork focused on low aerodynamic drag, resulting in its wedge-shaped silhouette. The exterior of this example is finished in Arctic Silver Metallic (309) and features rectangular pop-up headlights, fog lights, pillarless side windows, sculpted bumper covers and side skirts, and black body trim. The seller reports some minor rock chips throughout the body, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. The factory 16” BMW Style 8 wheels are mounted with new Continental Extreme Contact tires.
The interior is upholstered in Silver-Grey Nappa leather and features matching door panel inserts and carpets, accented by fine wood trim on the center console. Amenities include heated power-adjustable seats with memory, a power sliding sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, an onboard computer, an AM/FM cassette stereo, a hi-fi audio system, and a trunk-mounted 6-CD changer. The seller notes a blemish in the clear coat of the wood trim on the ashtray door.
The E31 840ci is powered by a 4.4L M62 V8, which produces up to 282 HP and 310 lb.-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. Acceleration from 0-60 MPH occurs in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 155 MPH. The seller reports that the water pump has been recently replaced, and new tires have been installed under their ownership.
This sale will include 3 keys, owner’s manuals, a car cover, a battery charger, and some service documentation.

These are lovely cars; I have one, although mine is a 4 liter, since it is a 1994 car. They are wonderful touring cars; I have fond memories of a trip from Annapolis to Virginia Beach, arriving quite relaxed and the car ready to reel off another 240 miles with no effort whatever.
Of note, the slightly later in-dash AM/FM/CD radio from a 750iL (I think it is) is a drop in fit, if you don't want to be limited to the CDs you have in the trunk changer. Plugs right into the factory harness, takes ten minutes.
I like the wood kit in this one, mine doesn't have it, and I think they are very hard to find, now. The current bid, this car is quite undervalued, IMHO.
@WedgePerformance I have non. The bottom is not rusty what so ever. Excellent, never on winter roads
@Fastguyrhodeisland01 Can you add some pictures of the suspension. I'm concerned about salt damage. Would like to see before placing a bid.

@shy Under carriage is beautiful, like the rest of the car. It appears to be all original, no evidence of paint work and or repair.
