Representing the final iteration of Porsche’s air-cooled 911, the 993 was a significant advance in technology and styling, featuring a lightweight alloy frame, the rear Weissach axle, and was the first 911 to receive a 6-speed manual transmission. This 1996 Carrera 4 was purchased by the current owner in 2001 in Oregon with 65,900 miles and was regularly serviced by the Porsche specialists at Stuttgart Autotech of Beaverton, OR, before being relocated to Boston, MA. It was stored in a garage and sparingly driven, before being moved to New Hampshire in 2017, covering around 700 miles a year for the last 5 years. Now showing approximately 112,150 miles on the odometer, this 993 Carrera 4 is now being offered at auction by the seller based out of New Hampshire.
This Carrera 4 is finished in Black, and rides on 17” Cup 2 wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps and Sumitomo HTR Z3 tires showing date codes from 2017. The seller reports the front and rear bumpers have been repainted, and notes some paint chips on the hood, a spot of rust at the bottom of the windshield as well as the rear bottom of the front wheel arches, a short crack on the rear bumper above the exhaust, as well as a small scratch on the left side of the front bumper, a minor dent on the left front fender, and a scratch on the sunroof. Additionally, the rear stone guards show cracking and are due for replacement. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The power-adjustable seats are upholstered in Classic Grey leather, with matching door panels and carpeting and a contrasting black dashboard. Amenities include cruise control, air conditioning, an anti-theft system, an electric sunroof, and a Quarz analog clock. The seller notes some wear to the driver’s outside seat bolster, and has fitted a leather 996 three-spoke steering wheel, as well as a Nakamichi CD-400 CD stereo.
The air-cooled 3.6L flat-six features a VarioRam intake system and was factory rated at 282 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission, which has received a new clutch and dual-mass flywheel at 93,400 miles. At 97,860 miles, the steering gear and tie rod assembly were replaced. The car was originally optioned with the motor sound airbox cover, and an aftermarket RSR muffler was added. The seller also reports an intermittent check engine light due to code P0410, a secondary air pump issue that can be reset. Documentation detailing the history of service at Porsche dealerships and specialists are available in the photo gallery.
This sale will include 2 keys, original owners manuals, a battery charger system, and extensive service records.

@Mrosilio Thank you for your interest. The DRIVE video has a cold start segment and does not show smoke upon start. When the car has been sitting for an extended period it does however show some smoke. Per my understanding that is a pretty normal behavior.
Unfortunately, I got rid of the original steering wheel during one of our moves as I didn't see me ever reinstall it.
I don't believe there's a cold start video posted - Any smoke on cold start or when driving?
Also, do you still have the original steering wheel?
Thanks

@AZCollector While we lived in Portland Oregon (where they don't allow putting salt on their roads) I didn't want to get stranded at our home in the hills. Coming from Germany I was a strong believer in winter tires. I purchased a second set of wheels and mounted winter tires. Those were 3 winters where we typically had 2 weeks of snow per winter. When we moved to the East Coast I drove the car for a few days when we ran a popup holiday market in New Hampshire and I needed to be flexible with the 993 as a second car. Overall, very little driven in the winter.
Regarding the SAI issue: the ports have not been cleaned. The issue showed up before we drove across the US in 2011 and since our arrival on the East Coast the car has been not been driven much. The CEL light reset seemed sufficient especially as the clogging does not impact anything other than smog testing (per my understanding). At one point I was close to having a Motorvac Carbon Clean performed but my research of the issues showed mixed results of the cleaning process.
Can you comment on the winter driving? It describes on several receipts about the corrosion underneath (steering) and then with a door handle. It also shows winter tires being mounted. How much was it driven in the winter?
On the SAI issue. Have you had a leakdown or compression test done? The earliest I see it being a diagnosed is 2011. has it been cleaned or checked? or just driven and reset when the CEL light comes on?

@DieterReuther Thank you
@SiA70 - Based on the floor in my garage where the car has been parked for the past 5 years there are no leaks that would cause spots on the floor. I have been topping off the oil between services as needed, but I have not tracked it.
Can you cover off any/all leaks, wondering where anything might be showing from engine. Per previous message assume some oil top up has happened in between service?
Thank you
@Mrosilio Will scan the recent service records and provide them. I didn't track oil usage though.
Hey,
Great car.
Can you post copies of the recent service/maintenance you've done? (clutch, tie rods, etc.).
What kind of oil have you been using and what has the oil consumption been over the years?
Thanks!

Hi, not a bad car but in California and lots of other states it could be a pain and a huge price bill to get sorted and registered. Good luck

@DieterReuther PM sent through contact tab
@SiA70 Earlier on Sunday morning could also be an option.
@DieterReuther That could work, let me check family schedule for kids sports, thank you
@RS136 - The original cat is still in place. However, I do not have the original mufflers. It was an exchange. Robin Sun who made the RSR muffler shipped modified mufflers in return for the original mufflers.
Clearing the codes is an easy solution. If a state requires the flags to be intact to pass the smog test a drive cycle can be followed to get the car ready for the test. I can provide. the drive cycle details.
Thank you for responding.
Yes most likely clogged sai passageway.
I think it’s miss leading to say clear the codes.
Because your also clearing the flags at same time witch is an automatic fail at the smog station maybe not in New Hampshire but in other states
Also do you have the original exhaust including original cat.
@SiA70 The car is in our garage in Rye New Hampshire. I'll drive up there from Boston on Sunday to meet somebody else. If that works for you we could meet there. Early afternoon?
@DieterReuther Appreciate your take, and the variety of views and possible reasons for the code, thanks for clarity on your side. I am on the North Shore, is it possible to view in person prior to auction end?
@SiA70 Thank you for your question @SiA70. I did not go that route. All 96-98 normally aspirated 993's will probably experience this issue and after doing quite some online research I came to the conclusion that I can live with it. Somebody else might decide differently. Results of rather complex procedures that other 993 owners report vary.
Re engine CEL code, has your engineer / service support checked diverter valves / run through SAI?
@RS136 Hi @RS136 - Every so often the check engine light (CEL) comes on. Much has been written about this well know issue of the 993 and it is known as the achilles heel of the 993: the secondary air injection system can become clogged over time. These clogged passages do not impact anything other than smog testing. Thus the resetting of the error codes prior to testing with an ODB2 reader. However, because the car is over 20 years old the on-board diagnostics (OBD) test is no longer part of the inspection process (in New Hampshire). There are DIY procedures to clean the secondary air injection ports. I am happy to leave my handheld ODB2 reader in the car. Hope this clarifies the issue.
Check engine light P code 0410
I’m confused. What do you mean “ can be reset”

@justdiggin It truly is a great handling car! Not to mention the sounds that comes with it. Thank you for checking out the auction.
these are GREAT cars. i sold my '96 C4 (manual, black / black) 4 years ago. 43k miles. very sticky around corners at ANY speed. predictable. smooth ride, yet agile. a very worthy hi performance car that is easy to handle and comfortable around town as well. best wishes with your sale dieter. i will be watching closely. ya just never know eh?
Wow, beautiful C4! GLWTA.
From the end of something to the beginning of something else, there is an important in-between, the transition. This has been our third Porsche 911 (Carrera and 964 before) and it has basically been a member of the family. In 2011, when we moved from Portland OR to Boston MA, we didn't just want to hop on a plane. Instead, we wanted to pay tribute to the distance and decided to drive across the country in our 993 C4. We passed 100K miles during the trip and all the car needed was gas and oil (well ... we lost a screw from the rear light).
However, for the past 9 years the car has been waiting in the garage too much and we came heavy hearted to realize that we have not been driving our Porsche 993 C4 as much as it deserves to be driven.
We are ready to say goodbye and wish a new owner joy and fun with this amazing car.
