This 1996 Porsche 993 Carrera Coupe is finished in Polar Silver over Black leather and pairs a 6-speed manual transmission with its air-cooled flat-six. An engine rebuild was completed about 100 miles ago, increasing displacement to 3.8L with Mahle pistons and cylinders, along with new camshaft components, a new fuel injector, and more. The clutch was replaced within the last 5k miles, and additional services were performed. This Carrera is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois.

Factory-specified in Polar Silver, this Coupe features projector headlamps with washers, fog lights, power-adjustable mirrors, Porsche-branded brake calipers, a speed-activated rear spoiler, and dual exhaust outlets. The ride height has been lowered, and the 17” Cup 2 wheels are fitted with colored Porsche crest center caps. The seller notes previous paintwork and repairs, confirming no Bondo was used. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Black leather interior includes a power sunroof, power windows, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. An aluminum and carbon fiber shift knob and brake handle are also equipped. The seller notes the driver’s seat was reupholstered at approximately 40k miles.

The air-cooled flat-six was reportedly rebuilt approximately 100 miles ago to a 3.8L displacement using Mahle 993 RSR pistons, cylinders, and camshaft components. At that time, a new fuel injector, starter, engine coil, and clutch slaves were installed. The clutch has been replaced twice, most recently within the last 5,000 miles at approximately 50k miles. The alternator was replaced within the past few years, approximately 2,000 miles ago.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, and a spare tire.

@Fastman72 Just to clarify on the build, this still has stock cams? Still has a dual mass flywheel? Thanks!

the screen shots from the article will be added shortly by PCAR. I did not add the photos from the article (i don't want anyone thinking they are photos from my 993). The cold start video that is in the listing - you can hear the signature RSR idling sound that is now present and wasn't before.

  • Fastman72 (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

The 3.8 should no less than 296hp and as much as 320 hp - it has not been dyno'd. My goal was more hp. I didn't get into any exhaust modifications. There is a good article on the process with lots of details and pics that i had read that is still online at: www.aircooledbug.co.uk that is very close to my story and car down to the mileage, color and what the owner wanted. He didn't make any exhaust modifications either. The car now has that signature RSR idle sound. Although the price for the parts / kit and the labor have all gone up, i can see myself getting into another 993 and doing the same thing, or possibly going 4.0 if the engine had more miles on it, if and when my back returns to normal and i'm able to drive one. if you search google search "aircooledbug 993 3.8 rebuild" the article should appear. I snapped a couple of screen shots and i'll add them to the listing shortly. I am still waiting for the shop to send me a screen shot of the OBD reader, which i will post.

I'd imagine 3.6 to 3.8 (bore) is a easier and less expensive option than 3.6 to 4.0 (bore and stroke)?

  • Davidmcd2018 2 months, 1 weekago

So you wanted to go to 4.0L but settled on 3.8. What hp was your goal and what hp does the car have now at 3.8L?

i spoke to the shop and they will plug in an OBD reader and he'll photograph the screen. I should have the photos in the next few hours, i will post them as soon as i receive them. Thanks for the question.

@Fastman72 Got plenty of questions on your 72 911e auction if you want to head over there

  • Fastman72 (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

okay - i see what an OBD reader is. I'll ask G Design if they can plug one in and see if he can take a picture of the OBD reader screen. I assume this is related to the inaccurate mileage that appears on the carfax report. It is a case of bad data input, bad data output. No idea where that figure came from, and find it unimaginable that anyone could add like 120k miles to a car in that period of time. My 997 S i bought in 2007 only has approximately 26k miles on it. To this point - i haven't driven any car in the past couple weeks. I work from home, and everything i need is a 5 minute walk.

  • Fastman72 (seller) 2 months, 1 weekago

Vonmec - really don't know how to calculate or estimate the number of miles driven on the car per year. It had less and less driving when i was adding cars, coupled with the short distance from home to my office and living in the middle of Chicago, limited miles have been added to the car the past several years, in particular with the engine project (delays with parts from Covid, etc).
Petey41 - i am not sure what an OBD reader is, but i'll see if i can get the answered myself and i'll post the answer if i am able to answer it or screen shot / picture of it.

  • Petey41 (registered bidder) 2 months, 1 weekago

Would it be possible to post a screenshot or picture of the total hours driven as shown via OBD reader?

i've just looked at the carfax report - no idea how / why the shop entered the completely wrong mileage. I can only assume the shop confused the car with some other vehicle's mileage. The engine was rebuilt to increase the displacement from 3.6 to 3.8 for additional power. I wanted to go 4.0, but i didn't want to mess with the mods, so we kept it to 3.8. Oct 2007 i bought a 997 S, which reduced my driving this 993. In 2010 I began buying more Porsches. By 2013 i had nine (9) cars while living in the middle of Chicago. A handful of rented garages scattered around the neighborhood along with everything else that comes with 9 cars, the cars began to own me. I started selling cars in 2018, and by 2020 i was down to 5 cars. At the end of 2020 i re-injured my lower back. I've had two lower back surgeries, with the 2nd/last being in February of 2021. i re-injured my back in March 0f 2024, herniating another disc. My twice surgeon did NOT recommend a third surgery. Despite the progress i have made with my back over the past year, it is still extremely uncomfortable for me to drive any 911. it took me six months before i could drive a Cayenne, and that was uncomfortable. It's the seat position and proximity to the floor in the 911s. So, I have sort of given up for the time being, and I have embarked on selling more cars. The car is in fantastic shape, no issues, no reason for any concerns.

@seller are you able to also comment on why the engine was rebuilt if only 59k total miles? Maybe the carfax question / answers will provide a clue. Thank you

  • Craignyc (registered bidder) 2 months, 2 weeksago

Milage on car fax seems like a mistake as it went from 57k to 173k in 2 years. But that doesn’t explain how from 2012 till now it only added 2k miles. Something is off.

  • Giorgio1967 (registered bidder) 2 months, 2 weeksago

I noticed the car fax last reported milage is 173,000 - Odometer reads 59,000
    Any explanation ?

  • Pkettle 2 months, 2 weeksago

    Following my first Porsche a 964 - I purchased a new 993 in 1996.
The car on auction looks and reads well and has been used as a main car with the 173K miles reported. It appears to have been well looked after until the new Mahle pistons and rebore were completed and other parts were installed.
I would be interested to see those details and cost prior to making a bid.
    Thank you.
